Fascinating. Just out of curiosity, what are the numbers for some of the non-southeastern megamarkets? NYC? Chicago? I can't figure out the website's reporting filters to save my life. Thanks!

EDIT: Never mind. When I clicked on the link a second time it became very obvious where to go.

Go to the top and hit return, then hit Summary Tables and you'll see the Metropolitan Area filter.

Charlotte still kicking as a major national banking center. Birmingham's still larger than Austin!

It is what it is....it's the dollar amount of deposits at all of the branches in that metro area...TOTAL deposits. It shows you where the money really is....if a bank is based in a city, it doesn't really matter...however, it can help and skew to a certain extent. Interesting, though, isn't it....Remember this isn't a GDP list (although it does give hints).

I honestly don't get it. If it's just about deposits at branches within a metro area then larger metros like Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, and Miami should blow away Charlotte. You're saying that having BofA in Charlotte skews this to a certain extent, but how? There must be more to it than that. Look at Sioux Falls. Look at Salt Lake City.

Large corporate accounts are usually based at banking headquarters (although they may not be located in that city)--Charlotte has banks. Look at Salt Lake City (Mormons), look at Reno (gambling money is funnelled in that direction)....not sure about Sioux Falls, but, there is a reason. It's all about deposits. But, almost ALL (not all) of the time, it is indicative of a healthy city economy. Charlotte would still be very healthy without banking headquarters accounts. You can look at the list from the SE and clearly see that it mostly matches your perception of how large cities are (in your mind) in the SE and the way we think is pretty spot on. You didn't honestly think that Charlotte has more money locally than Houston, Dallas, Miami, or Atlanta???--with the population and that money, they would be third world countries compared to Charlotte.

Yes...something is being funnelled through the system with a city that size. Do you know what it is? Curious.

Maybe the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond has something to do with it? Just a guess...

It'd be interesting to see the Deposits Pre Recession for these cities, that would really show the influence of the banking industry.

I didn't think that at all. I thought it was in direct relationship to the banking presence here, which is why I couldn't follow the logic of it being FDIC-insured deposits within the metro. I understand your explanation though.
