Sadly, you aren't describing just Times Square - you are describing all of Manhattan. It has become Disneyland with some supertalls

I can't complain about the reduction in crime but it is very much losing its character.

Orange and red neon stamping out B-A-R-B-E-C-U-E will catch my eye longer than 50-foot LEDs. There's no character to constantly changing video-like displays. There's no warmth or charm to it, either. Fortunately, plenty of neon and smaller 'old school' static displays will probably always exist on the fringes of Times Square, and along 42nd St.

Intersting how when you see pictures from the teens you still see plenty of horses but in these from the 20s you don't.

I wonder when the horses finally all disappeared from the streets of New York?

[Cagney voice] And it was O'Briens gym, see...where you went to box--or reduce! No pussyfooty treadmills and nautilus.

Great posts! Can't believe how much Times Square has changed, and not for the better by the looks of it.

My guess is that the ornamentaion was buffed sometime in the 1940s or '50s during the modern retrofit era and after the New Amsterdam was converted into a movie house.

Compared to today, the mid-'80s practically look like the mid-1960s.

I don't think Times Squares looks sterile.... If anything it looks a lot better now then it ever did. All New York had then was bricks, concrete and large signs. Now, it's the best of everything. It had to grow up eventually anyways.

I wonder if the character of the old TS that people bemoan the loss of is specifically due to the filth, grit and shadiness (strip clubs, drug addicts, prostitutes and pimps, among other insalubrious things) or some other factor.
