Not necessarily on the big screen, unless you're one of those that have to watch it on your BIG screen , but I noticed this year's pro bowl/super bowl marketing backgrounds feature illustrated skylines from all 3 metros in South Florida, a nice touch...

(best one I could find online, its a shame FTL is covered up by the logo...)

Those are really indistinguishable buildings, wow, but it's nice that they used all three cities.

The Losers

The Losers; a new action movie that looks really good, set in Miami.

The Hangover, which was the best movie of 2009, was filmed in Las Vegas. The Hangover 2 began pre-production this week in Miami and the full crew will be in Miami to begin filming in October.

Interesting article from Miami Today regarding the local film industry. Hopefully, the state incentives mentioned are passed so that this decline might be reversed.

Miami-Dade filming off 25%; focus on new incentive

By Scott E. Pacheco

Miami-Dade filming outlays plummeted 25% in 2009 to about $100 million, far worse than forecast.

The plunge in industry spending was down from $130 million in 2008 and about $150 million in 2007, according to local film offices.

Jeff Peel, Miami-Dade film office director, in December forecasted 2009 spending at $110 million to $120 million.

"The numbers are pretty stark," he said. "To drop over $50 million in two years and not to see any feature film work here at all is really disconcerting."
Pundits blame lack of competitive state incentives for feature film spending of just $4 million for 2009, the first year in many without extensive feature work here.

Senate Bill 1430 and companion House Bill 697 could help. If passed, a law effective July 1 would boost state incentives from this year's $10.8 million covering a few projects to $75 million in annual tax credits.

The House bill would make qualified productions eligible for tax credit equal to 20% of actual qualified spending.

For offseason filming, certified feature films, independent films, commercials, or television series or pilots could get an extra 5% tax credit.

South Florida Rep. Julio Robaina, bill co-sponsor, said Miami has more to gain than other cities.

He said he's spoken with numerous major industry players who say that with South Florida's climate they'd follow a competitive incentive here.

"It's necessary because the state of Florida must be able to compete with other states for a piece of that industry's money," he said. "We've always said that if we were at least competitive we would probably become the most active state to this industry because of the year-round weather."

Many supporters call an incentive vital this year from the standpoint of not only economic impact but employment. Without it, they say, production crew members living in Florida may move to states with strong film incentives — and plentiful jobs — such as Georgia and Louisiana.

Florida's film industry is at a "critical juncture," Mr. Peel said.
"What we are seeing already is crew are going elsewhere," he said. "There's no work here for them. Until that turns around, those people will go away. They are still maintaining homes here. Once we lose that crew and once we lose the businesses [such as film labs and lighting houses] because they can't get work here, then the Florida advantage is going to be diminished."

Mr. Robaina agreed.

"If it doesn't pass I see it as a very bad message sent to this industry all around the US [that] Florida is really not committed to making this a film-friendly state."

Rick Feldman, president and CEO of National Association of Television Programming Executives Market and Conference, which just unveiled a move of its conference and 5,000 attendees from Las Vegas to Miami Beach, said Florida must monitor other states' incentives.

"It's a very, very big deal," he said. "The competition to get the business is really intense.Ö Florida would be a wonderful place for many shows."

I disagree, I am against tax dollars being spent for film incentives. Filmmakers just abuse them, much of the incentives go to crappy films that no one will watch and are just done to get the incentives.

As you can see above a real blockbuster like 'The Hangover' which grosses hundreds of millions will come whether or not there are incentives.

Agreed that plenty winds up benefiting low-level films that few will ever see but this was an industry that seemed to be growing in importance in Miami/South Florida that is now seeing a serious decline according to the numbers.

I'm not sure how the incentives work out on a cost/benefit analysis but for an area still heavily dependent on tourist revenues, there would seem to be added impetus on reversing the trend.

Understood where you're coming from, though. I just think the state needs to be careful about not losing even more ground.

According to those numbers is the operative phrase. The article notes that Miami-Dade numbers are down and blames incentives. Is it really the incentives? The article doesn't address the industry spending in Hollywood, was the spending there down 25% as well? How about North Carolina or Chicago or Toronto? I'd bet the decrease in spending in Miami-Dade is similar to the decrease in spending in other markets.

You can't blame the politican for trying to get free money (from taxpayers) to give to the people that vote for him, because that is what politicians do.
But it would be nice for the journalist to do a little more investigation.
Is Miami-Dade spending down while every other competitior is up?
Is there any other explanation for spending to be down besides lack of incentives? Could it be a long permitting process? Could it be the the Police demand prohibitive fees to block off roads/provide protection/etc.
Also, what makes a "qualified production", the article doesn't say.

Here's a list I pulled off the Internet. It's obviously lacking. True Lies isn't even there as well as Absence of Malice. Sean Connery filmed a non-Bond movie here, I guess about 10 years ago, that I can't remember the name of, and Denzel was shooting something here several years ago that I can't remember the name of.

The Denzel Washington movie you are referring to is called OUT OF TIME....with Eva Mendes and Dean Cain. Florida noir at its best!

Just got back from Iron Man 3, a good half of the movie takes place in Miami. I wont spoil the ending but there's scenes from Biscayne Bay, Vizcaya, and Port of Miami, and a lot of good skyline shots!
