They do locks cars at important junctions. But my point was to mass lock the cars. Currently AMC doesn't have enough locks. Only yardstick to such problem is to strictly implement the rules.

Thats what I said, start locking the cars, provide efficient public transport and enough parking space through multi level parking similar to Kankaria (U/C). Such implementation should be kicked off from the C.G. Road and if successful be implemented one by one in each junction.

Also, There must be digital board, telling car owners about current current position of all multilevel parking buildings similar to Singapore, where on each road, we are guided about how much space is level in such buildings.

Surely it can be implemented, if and only if we have multi level parking at all important places.

Loving this discussion u are having. My view of Amdavad (and Amdavadi's) comes from the chaos of Manek chowk and Law Garden.

You guys must be transplants from Vadodra!

I think if people are using Singapore as a model, then no matter what come's about in the end will be a role model for most cities!

LOOK! THAT’S LAW GARDEN!

CEPT, AMC join hands to make Law Garden, Siddi Saiyad mosque, Kankaria and other landmarks pedestrian-friendly, presentable

Source

Quote:
Ahmedabad will never be the same again. In fact, it will be much better than you can imagine. The municipal corporation and Centre for Environment and Planning Technology are working together on a dream project to make the tourist destinations in the city more people friendly, visible and presentable. As part of the makeover project, CEPT has proposed plans to beautify the periphery of 10 sites.

Categorised under Religious, Entertainment and Freedom Icon tourism destinations, the sites are: Sarkhej Roza in Makarba, Hutheesing Jain Temple in Shahibaug, Jhulta Minara in Sarangpur, Siddi Saiyad mosque in Lal Darwaza, Law Garden Market in Ellisbridge, Calico Museum in Shahibaug, Kankaria Lake in Maninagar, Gandhi Ashram in Sabarmati, Kochrab Ashram in Paldi and Sardar Smarak in Shahibaug.

Professor Utpal Sharma, Project Head from CEPT, said, “These locations in their current situation do attract people owing to their heritage and entertainment factors but at the same time, they lack the right ambience, visual connectivity and are not pedestrian-friendly.

Traffic congestion is a common problem here as the sites have not been developed as tourist spots, and hence are not very appealing.” He added, “In the first phase, we will begin work on Law Garden, Hutheesing Jain Temple and Siddi Saiyad Jali. We shall develop the premises and the periphery of these places by adding new elements which will include better seating arrangements, pedestrian lanes, and gardens. These locations are being developed as part of the Khushboo Gujarat ki campaign.”

The first phase of the project worth Rs 15 crore spans over a period of two years and will take off in April 2013.

The beautification would also include sapling plantation, installation of signages and traditional light poles, and setting up of garbage collection system and public toilets.

LAW GARDEN

According to one of the options, the handicraft market might be shifted to the road parallel the khau gali while the parking facility will be made opposite GLS campus. This will make the area pedestrian-friendly and also ensure that handicraft vendors do not suffer

In the first phase, Law Garden, one of the most popular recreation destinations, is all set to undergo a major change. Though the handicrafts bazaar and khau gali (street food lane) near the garden attracts tourists and foodies, it is not pedestrian-friendly since it often witnesses traffic bottlenecks and parking problems. “We have suggested two options to the corporation to make the lane more accessible to pedestrians. There will be proper seating arrangements and organised spaces for recreational activities. Law Garden should have a direct connect with the common public. We will also integrate the ongoing project proposals like BRTS routes with the new layout,” said Sharma, who is also Dean of School of Planning and Public Policy, CEPT. In the first option, we have proposed to make the khau gali a vehicle-free zone, bring uniformity to the stalls and develop the area as a food zone with comfortable seating arrangements while letting the handicraft market remain in its current location. A parking facility has been proposed on the less-congested stretch running parallel to the khau gali on the other side of the garden. In the alternative suggestion, which seems to be more “practical”, the team has proposed to shift the handicraft market to the stretch parallel to the khau gali and also make that road a one-way so that people can shop freely. A parking area has been suggested on the spot where the handicraft market currently stands and also right outside GLS campus. “The second option will ensure less traffic and also take care of parking problems. Moreover, handicraft vendors will not suffer,” said Sharma.

SIDDI SAIYAD JALI

In the current set-up, the Siddi Saiyad mosque is vulnerable to its surroundings as it witnesses heavy traffic and pollution. CEPT has proposed to enhance the place as major heritage destination by connecting it better with people. “The mosque is visually and physically not well-connected to the eastern and western parts of the city due to heavy traffic. The Apna Bazar junction is being used as parking space for AMTS buses, which creates congestion and hence lacks pedestrian-friendly environment. We have proposed to re-organise and sync the traffic flow and pedestrian movement. We have also proposed a plinth to view the Jali and Mughal Char Bagh Garden. We plan to extend the premises of the mosque by redeveloping the Mughal Garden and building an underground connection to Sardar Baug without disturbing the traffic. In the other option, we intend to join the mosque with the eastern side so as to divert the traffic and make the mosque’s periphery accessible to walkers.”

The Siddi Saiyad Jali premises might get an extension as the team plans to redevelop a Mughal Char Bagh Garden besides the mosque and connect it with the Sardar Bagh through an underground passage. As per the plan, the monument will be connected to the East of the city ( MG House)

HUTHEESING JAIN TEMPLE

The Hutheesing Jain Temple is located amid congested and informal surroundings, making the entrance to the premises insignificant. Also, a high compound wall reduces the visibility of the temple from the roadside. “This site lacks adequate greenery inside the premises and needs more visibility. With the makeover, we plan to strengthen visual connectivity of the complex to the outside world by reducing the size of the boundary wall. We will have seating arrangements at the temple plaza and improve pedestrian movement in and around the premises. We intend to re-establish the traditional connection between the city and its people by enhancing the place as a major heritage and tourist destination,” said Sharma. AMC Commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra said, “We plan to build quality public amenities at these tourist locations in order to make them more attractive and peoply-friendly. This will also boost tourism in the city. The first phase will begin from April this year.”

To increase the visibilty of the Hutheesing Jain Temple, the team will reduce size of boundary wall and make the entrance to the temple more prominent. Also tourists will get better seating arrangements
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Wonderful initiative taken by AMC, will go a long way to help with the 'Heritage City' status...

10 best spots in AMC list to boost tourism

Under an ambitious tourism programme for the city, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is developing 10 tourist places including some of the most visited ones like Gandhi Ashram, Law Garden, Sidi Sayyad Mosque, Sarkhej Roza, Jhulta Minara among others. Apart from providing supporting facilities including parking, stress will be on offering public utility services along with beautification of these sites.

The project is undertaken by the AMC in collaboration with the state tourism corporation (Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Limited). These 10 sites are divided in two phases with five in each, conceptual work on first five sites including Law Garden, Sidi Sayyad Mosque, Sarkhej Roza, Jhulta Minara and Hutheesing Jain temple is nearing completion.

"With designs and technical specifications of these almost complete, the same will be opened for tendering this month. This will be followed by development work on sites. The plan is to involve beautification, signages, landscaping, traditional light poles and public utility development which is entirely lacking at these sites added with food stalls, souvenir shops and other facilities," said municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the design work is done by a team of architects and designers at the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) University under the leadership of Prof. Utpal Sharma. It is said the plan was floated after it was realised that despite having numerous tourist sites in Ahmedabad, one can hardly visit these in the absence of supporting facilities around these sites.

"The aim was to develop these places as major heritage and recreation destinations while creating connections with its visitors. Also, to integrate with the ongoing projects like BRTS was another challenge. Attempts were also made to address issues like parking, open spaces, traffic and pedestrian movement and seating space,' revealed Trupti Patel, one of the architects at CEPT working on the project.

With an estimated total cost of Rs 50 crore, the work on remaining five sites will take off later this year. Other five tourist attractions to be covered in second phase includes Gandhi Ashram, Calico museum, Kochrab Ashram, Kankaria Lake and Smarak Bhavan with each place having its own rich heritage and significance. Thus, not much changes will be made to the original structures, in order to support the sites, the surrounding areas will be developed.

For instance, at present, the Sidi Sayyed Mosque which has the famous stone lattice work on its semi-circular windows, hardly has accessibility for the visitors due to its locations that is in the centre of the city at Lal Darwaja. With all kinds of traffic movement at all sides, the mosque has become a traffic island.

As per the development plans, the road on the back side of the mosque will be closed and the existing Sardar Baugh, the garden beyond the road will be extended to the mosque. To add to its heritage, the garden will be designed in Mughal 'char bagh' format within the premises.

"Also, as per the plans, a tourist amenity centre, viewing terrace towards the jali, an underground connection to the Sardar Baugh including redevelopment of Sardar Baugh are on the cards. Thus, not only it will provide a view for the visitors but also make it accessible to them," added Trupti.

The proposed sites

Phase I
  1. Law Garden
  2. Sidi Sayyad Mosque
  3. Sarkhej Roza
  4. Jhulta Minara
  5. Hutheesing Jain temple

Phase II
  1. Gandhi Ashram
  2. Calico museum
  3. Kochrab Ashram
  4. Kankaria Lake
  5. Smarak Bhavan

Nowadays it seems GoG is more interested in developing Ahmedabad as tourist hub. In past some years there is no new big industry coming to Ahmedabad. Most projects signed during past investment summits link with tourism. GoG is promoting industries away from Ahmedabad - Sanand, Dholera, Bechraji, etc. This is the best solution for future problems of our mega city. By this we can control migration and decongest city and control its large sprawl in coming years.

Eager to see Special Ahmedabad packages on travel sites.

+1

That is how an industrial cum heritage city like Amdavad should ideally develop! We have GIFT and IT industries planned in the North, Textile and Pharma in the GIDCs in the East, Dholera, Changodar, Bavla, Aslali, Bareja etc in the South and Auto Industry in Sanand to the West. And on top such good heritage and recreational areas like Sab RF, Kankaria etc

Pretty much everything!!
