Construction definitely underway now. Workers on site today. The south portion of it is dug up with concrete in the ground and rebar sticking out of it. I know this isn't huge, but can't wait.

This project is 'huge', just not in terms of its size... It's more about the example it sets.

I think it's bigger than it looks. That's a big block. It's good because I think south of the crosstown will be somewhat lumped separate from north of the crosstown at least culinary wise.

So much hotel development in downtown, forgot about this one. Any updates? Website states a Fall of 2013, so they must be further then just pushing dirt at this point of the game.

They're definitely moving along at a fast clip. I pass by the site frequently, either on Howard or the Crosstown. Each time, the site has always progressed quite a bit between visits. As of this afternoon, they were halfway done painting the exterior of the parking garage, which is nearly complete.

They're on the 5th now, plus installing utilities on the lower floors.

Saw it this evening before it was dark. I couldn't help but imagine what the Armenia/Howard corridor would be like if it had about 30-50 more buildings of this general scale along it from Swann to I-275.

SOHO is going to be a traffic nightmare in the coming year, with the hotel, post soho square apartments, and the restaurants/ retail going in, theyll be quite a few more cars out there....

anyone know whats going to happen to extreme gym building just north of this hotel?

That gym building is in serious need of a makeover. A real eyesore. According to the property appraiser's website it's owned by "Tampa Enterprises, Inc." since 1971. Looks like it's been that long since anything was done to the outside.

There is a rezoning application for the gym which is on Council's agenda for next month. I'm guessing it will probably become apartments.

All the more reason to get better transit going.

And any rights of way that will ever need to be widened (for more car lanes, bike lanes, transit, or simply to improve intersections for ped safety and truck access), needs to be taken care of asap, before further development locks in the narrow roads we've got now.

As long as Albany, Cass, Cypress, Rome, Willow, Platt and Cleveland stay as wide as they are now, we're good.

I believe the entire SOHO area should adopt a Coconut Grove mentality and expand where they can while protecting the "fabric" of the surrounding areas...the residential areas. The Grove has done it successfully and retained their charm, IMO, while identifying themselves idependently of Miami.

Yeah, the sign at the site says they are applying for a zoning change from "CI" to " PD". Commercial-Industrial to Planned Development.

15,000 sq. ft. of retail... 212 units (four and five-story).
