Manhattan after the blackout
I took the opportunity last night to ride my bike into the city and take some pics. It was eerily dark, and the majority of the light was from car headlights. As I came over the williamsburg bridge, the lights went completely dark at the halfway point. There were hardly any people out, even though it was halloween night, making it especially creepy. Enjoy.
Overlooking the freeway on the bridge. Notice the bike path on the left. ![]() ![]() Also from the bridge. ![]() This was the only open store I saw, powered by a generator. ![]() How it looked when there were no cars driving by. The light on the sidewalk is from the store. Everywhere else was too dark to take a pic. ![]() The only other open "business" I saw. ![]() There were a lot of cars in this area (delancey st) because the bridge is the only way to get to/from brooklyn. It lets all the cars off right here. I can't imagine how desolate other areas of lower manhattan must be. ![]() Looking down Chrystie st. with the Chrysler building in the background. ![]() Delancey and Chrystie. ![]() ![]() ![]() Looking across Chrystie st. There is a median with a park/bike path. Notice the outlines of the bikes chained up to the fence. ![]() Looking down Chrystie st a little overexposed at 1:00 am.

Though most of these stores were cash only obviously -- a big inconvenience to those who had no ready access to ATMs. Great pix. I roamed the West Side as far down as tribeca Wednesday night, and it was pretty much the same below 23rd street. |

Really strange to see NYC like that! Was even central Manhattan like that? Especially creepy thinking about it was on halloween.

23rd St to 14th st is technically part of midtown. Midtown is from 59th down to 14th. 14th to the southern tip of Manhattan is technically downtown. Pockets between 34th and 23rd didn't have power Wednesday night. Power is now pretty much back on. |
