Jade Weser Port
Completed by 2010!
A new port, where the largest ships (water depth of 16m) in the world can unload its cargo. It's needed due to limited water-depth and extension in Hamburg (12,5m) and Bremen. In June 2002, the States of Lower Saxony and Bremen have launched one of largest infrastructure projects to be seen in northern Germany for 50 years: the JadeWeserPort in Wilhelmshaven - Germany’s only deep-sea port for the future generation of container ships. The first of these highly modern jumbo container ships will call on the JadeWeserPort in 2010 when the terminal enters service. The location on the Jade is ideal: nautical simulations prove that the planned port with a short approach of only 23 sea miles independent of tidal constrains, can easily handle container ships with capacities beyond 8,000 TEU, lengths up to 430 metres, 58 metres in width and draughts up to 16,50 metres. A planned quay of 1,725 m in length with up to 17 gantry cranes will be capable of providing simultaneous service to 4 container ships and feeder ships. The timing of the future container terminal is ideal: international trade is growing rapidly, container traffic is booming and experts predict unprecedented future growth in the following years. The JadeWeserPort will be the most easterly deep-sea port in the European North Range (Le Havre - Hamburg). The annual projected handling capacity of the JadeWeserPort is estimated at 2.7 million TEU p.a.. Approximately two thirds of all container traffic is expected for transhipment via the Wilhelmshaven Hub to the European market, in particular to Scandinavia, the new European Union States around the Baltic and Russia. Therefore, JadeWeserPort will serve as an important link within the Trans-European “Motorways of the Seas” network. The dispatch of jumbo container and feeder ships at one terminal with no entrance locks or tidal constraints is one of the most significant advantages of JadeWeserPort. This will eliminate unnecessary terminal hopping by feeder ships, thus saving valuable time and money. Companies can base themselves next to the freight village within the planned 170 hectare logistic and industrial zone connected to the 120 hectare terminal. A further 400 hectares of development land is available on demand. Traffic connections by road and rail will be optimised with the national Autobahn 29 connected directly to the freight village at the terminal complex. Total project investment is estimated to reach €950 million, of which the future terminal operator will contribute up to €350 million for the Suprastructure. ![]() ![]() Technical Data Comprehensive studies have determined the layout for the measures and the concept: Land reclamation of 360 ha for: for the construction of a container terminal behind a quay with a length of 120 ha creation of a logistic, industrial and commercial area 170 ha area for road and rail connection and embankment for flood protection 70 ha Terminal Data quay length 1.725 m container handling area 650 m water depth (below sea chart zero) 18 m turning basin (diameter) 700 m annual container handling capacity (TEU) 2,7 Mio. |

..opened today! (..at least the first 1000m of the quay), looks like a "short" delay, and it cost about 80mio. euro more than planned..
