Did anyone notice that the total exports from CSEZ is only the 3rd highest among all the 160 SEZs in the country

Yes and highest among Central Govt SEZ's. But since it is multi product and IT is very less employment numbers are very less. But still Kochi is making money and Kochi means business

Can anyone tell what manufacturing business are carried out inside the CSEZ?

Almost every product is there. Gem and jewellery is the highest contributor.

Gold units in Cochin SEZ under DRI watch

KOCHI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is closely monitoring the activities of gem and jewellery units at the Cochin Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) in Kakkanad, after two employees of a unit were arrested for allegedly selling gold in the local market.

The arrested persons, Harish Babu, the exim manager, and Biju Abraham, general manager of Rajesh Exports Ltd, have been remanded in judicial custody. DRI officials said the accused smuggled out three kg of gold from the SEZ unit and supplied it to the local market.

"We are conducting a detailed probe into the incident. A case has been registered against the company. We suspect that the unit has been carrying out this illegal activity for the past few years," an oficial said, adding the records of other units too would be verified.

CSEZ development commissioner A N Safeena said a notice had been issued to Rajesh Exports. The DRI official said the unit used to import three to four consignments of gold, each coming to 340 kg a month, through the Cochin International Airport.

"As the unit is operating from the SEZ, they are exempted from the 4% excise duty. The company is only allowed to process the gold in SEZ and export it. By smuggling it out of the SEZ, they have violated the Customs rules," the official said.

Rajesh Exports plans Rs 400-cr expansion of SEZ operations

Rajesh Exports, among the top publicly held gold jewellery exporters in India, is set to expand its gold processing special export-processing zone (SEZ) in Kochi with an investment of Rs 400 crore.

The company will fund this expansion from internal resources and will look at tapping the external commercial borrowing market for this.

The SEZ, which has been operational for the past few years, has a capacity to process eight tonnes of gold a month and this will have a unit to focus on specialised jewellery meant for Italian and other global markets.

Rajesh Mehta, chairman and managing director,said the company was in the final stages of putting up this new unit and they should be starting exports in the near future.

“There is huge demand for Indian designed jewellery in global markets and we intend to tap that potential. The new unit will have a capacity to process four tonnes of gold per month,” he said.

The company, which was in the news after 900 g of gold were seized at Kochi railway station, has said it was not involved in any activity which was against the law of the country. “We have checked the stock and all the accounts are perfectly tallied and no stock is missing from our SEZ. It seems like a case of mistaken identity and our company is not involved in this matter in any manner,” Mehta noted.

The company, which has annual revenue of Rs 30,000 crore, mostly from exports, has also been focusing on increasing its retail sales in India.

“Currently, close to 90 per cent of the revenues come from exports and as we are increasing the focus on retail sales, we should be have 15 per cent of revenues from retail sales over a period of time,” he added.
