Our company just won a new "contract" in Iraq.
However the funny thing is that the ministry in question has stipulated that the products we use on this project must be of "European, USA, Japanese" origin only!! Quite astonishing that they would accept a product made in Moldova but not a product made in South Korea or Canada or Australia! That is only the first of the issues... many of the components upon inspection of the Bill of Materials I found could be manufactured locally in Iraq... however the Ministry DOES NOT ACCEPT Iraqi made parts... it has to be "european, USA, Japanese". so with such complete and utter RETARDATION in the simplest of tender specifications, how on earth do they intend to develop both Iraq's small to medium industry as well as have competitive infrastructure when products from advanced countries are automatically excluded from tendering!! mind boggling.

They probably also wanted a share of the income.....
Embarrassing really. What do they gain by this madness? One would have thought that Iraq was not their prime interest but their own pockets... |

2013 federal budget to include loans for industrialists, says MP
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) -MP Abdul Hussein Abtan, member of the Parliamentary Economy and Investment Committee, announced that 2013 federal budget will include loans for the industrialists with low benefits. Abtan stated to IraqiNews.com that “The Iraqi Government submitted a proposal with 2013 budget to offer loans to the industrialists with low benefits in order to address the problems faced by the industrial sector in the country.” “The industrial sector needs such projects because it needs money and support after the embargo imposed on the country during the former regime,” he added. It is worth mentioning that the industrial sector in Iraq suffers from clear negligence by the Government due to lack of support and its reliance after 2013 only on the external import which overfills the local markets.

IFC helps in renovating cement factory in Karbala
12/27/2012 3:50 PM BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: International Finance Coporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is providing a $70m loan to help renovate a cement factory in Iraq, part of an effort to support the local building sector and aid in the country's reconstruction. The financing will allow Kerbala Cement Manufacturing (KCML), a subsidiary of France's Lafarge, to rehabilitate a state-owned plant near the city of Kerbala. KCML will undertake the work under a concession agreement with the government of Iraq. The financing is expected to help bolster Iraq's construction sector, a key source of jobs, and support rebuilding efforts in the country, which is in dire need of infrastructure following years of conflict. "This financing will help address the cement shortage that Iraq is facing and help the country meet supply gaps in its infrastructure," said Guy Ellena, IFC Director for Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services in Eastern and Southern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. "It will also play a catalytic role in attracting other foreign investors to Iraq." KCML is a joint venture between Lafarge and Merchant Bridge, a London-based private equity group. The financing is being supplemented by a $20m loan from Proparco, a development financial institution funded by the French Development Agency and private shareholders. IFC and Proparco will work with KCML to implement an environmental and social strategy, helping align the company with international standards for sustainability. The initiative is part of IFC's efforts to support the development of Iraq's private sector. Over the past two years IFC committed about $500m in the country, including $245m in mobilization. Project aims to boost Anbar's fish industry
2013-01-31 By Saif Ahmad in Anbar A boy sells fish at a market in Baghdad. [Mahmoud al-Mulhim/Mawtani] + COMMENT NOW In a bid to develop Iraq's fishing industry, the Anbar provincial council on Monday (January 28th) opened a scientific laboratory, a research and development centre and four large fish farms. RELATED ARTICLES Iraqi Independent Women’s Group Holds First Women’s Conference in Al-Anbar Anbar to rebuild four bridges destroyed by al-Qaeda Iraq inaugurates three new bridges over the Tigris and Euphrates rivers Qualitative Leap for Iraqi Army in the First Half of this Year The laboratory is in the city of Ramadi, while the fish farms are in Heet, Fallujah, al-Qaim and Ramadi, officials said. These projects were launched in co-operation with the Agricultural Department and other government agencies, Anbar provincial council deputy chairman Saadoun Obaid al-Shaalan told Mawtani. The laboratory will be used to study the life cycles of fish, conduct periodic testing and provide diagnosis and treatment for diseases that afflict fish, he said. The research centre is studying and evaluating the fish industry and looking for ways to increase the types and quantity of fish, he said. It also is supporting fish farm owners in Anbar through the introduction of modern methods, thereby boosting the industry and helping the country's economy. Additionally, the centre will offer advice, instruction and information to Anbar fish farmers on how to raise various types of fish, prevent diseases and increase the varieties, he said. "The scientific laboratory will focus on studying the fish, meeting the needs of fish farm owners and fishermen by providing treatment for their fish," Lateef Mahmoud, director of the fish laboratory in Ramadi, told Mawtani. The lab also will seek ways to conserve species threatened with extinction, he said, in addition to setting up teams that will pay regular visits to fish farms in Anbar. A VITAL INDUSTRY "The fish industry requires more support from the governments of Baghdad and Anbar, particularly in increasing the number of fish farms, backing farm owners and banning unlicensed fishing," Mahmoud said. Other areas that need to be addressed include the trespassing of water surfaces in the Euphrates River and the two lakes of al-Habbaniyah and al-Tharthar, as well as the future construction of major developmental projects, he said. "Fish wealth has become an essential artery in the economies of all countries and a major source of vitamin-rich food , which makes it imperative to build projects that support and develop this industry in Anbar," Soufouk al-Nuaimi, director of the Fish Research Centre in Anbar, told Mawtani, "The rise in water levels of the Euphrates River during this winter season and heavy rainfall will be important factors behind the growth and increase in the numbers of fish," al-Nuaimi said. "The reproduction season is near, which is why it was necessary to launch and open these projects, such as the laboratory, the research centre, the hatching farms and the man-made fish farms," he said. A committee composed of Anbar University scientists completed a study on production methods and ways to maintain a healthy level of fish population, he said. The group identified steps to be followed in marketing and selling that would keep the fish population from becoming depleted, he added. "Boosting the fish industry will contribute towards strengthening the Iraqi economy, which consumes thousands of tonnes of fish daily," al-Nuaimi said. "This requires massive projects to lower [reliance on] the quantities of imported fish, while working on exporting quantities of fish from Iraq to external markets to create financial revenues for the state and the local companies.
