some final stats for the "winter"...
![]() at 40.9F, this is the warmest February ever recorded for Central Park and the second warmest meteorological winter (D-J-F) behind the 2001-2002 season... the normal temperature for February is 35.9F--shows you how warm this month has been (and the whole winter for that matter).. the 7.4" of snow received by Central Park is also the least amount of snowfall in 10 years (2001-2002 only had 3.5")... that's probably it for winter as we're looking at 60s next week and even some 70s by the middle of March...

Yeah just like last year's pre-Halloween storm, really weird to have so much snow fall when trees still have leaves on their branches.
And as quick as it came, it's already melted away.

The fall season in the immediate NYC area is more like the south. Many trees tend to stay green even into November. One of the latest is the 'Bradford' pear, and one of the most disastrous trees ever planted in urban areas. The tree branches shatter from the trunk in winds over 50 mph. Although it's been mostly eradicated in plantings, its replacement 'Chanticleer' got ripped apart as well out here, but the winds were over 70mph.
A lot of large trees came down out in Nassau, and we had the worst damage to the lines, homes that I've ever seen from a high wind event. But strangely enough, the most massive trees I've known for years are still standing. Many completely undamaged. The north shore and central part of the island got gusts over 80 and 90 mph. The snowstorm brought down more trees, though, and damaged many shrubs and it will take a few years for the landscape to recover overall now.

happy winter!! we begin this season with three potential threats: Christmas, Dec 27, and Jan 2...
the xmas day storm is looking more likely and we could even see a 1-3" by morning--it's been years since we've had the white stuff falling during christmas morning... then after that, a much bigger storm by December 26-27... looks like a snow to rain to snow scenario though... then a much more interesting storm as we head into the new year.. this one is more than 10 days away but the signals are there for a big storm; the first half of January looks to be really cold as well..

It snowed on Christmas Eve about 8pm and sugarcoated everything white, except the pavements. Then was gone before midnight mass. What perfect little gift.

So far all the forecasted snow have been epic fails. I have a feeling we will have a somewhat similar winter like we did last season.

the turn to cold was predicted nicely back in late november.. we did have some threats unfortunately most didn't pan out for NYC (areas north and west did cash in though)...
next two weeks will be above average with the warmest probably by next week (50s possible in some areas)... then by the middle of January, we expect arctic air to return to our region with snow chances as well...

I liked the initial forecasts of 3 to 30 inches of snow, a few days ago as meteorologists were confused as to which model to follow
