Most cities in other countries look the same as well. Many English cities look just like smaller versions of London. Many American cities (with the exception of NYC, Boston and DC) all look very similar. Japanese cities look just like smaller versions of Tokyo.

In fact, I feel like China has one of the more varied regional cities. Xi'an is full of imitation Tang dynasty architecture (some might find this tacky b/c they are still modern buildings, but IMO it would be very appreciated decades from now). Manzhouli looks very different from Suzhou, which looks very different from Xiamen.

I agree Beijing is different from Shanghai. But for most other cities I would only agree with you if all the commie blocks and new steel-glasses are removed. The new buildings are having a bigger weight over the traditional ones. I'm not a nimby but architects and city planners should have some style in mind when they design/approve EVERY building. Maybe only Beijing, Suzhou follow this in some kinds, others are busy developing and following and don't have time to keep the soul of a city in buildings.

Watch out, there's Yinchuan, capital of Ningxia Hui A.R. - the government is building up that city to become an important hub of trade and commerce between China and the Arab world...

I forgot there's Kashgar as well - in Xinjiang as well

Since Urumqi is also a Muslim city, I think the national and local government should tap its potential...

I don't think Yinchuan is developed to the same level of Urumqi. We're going to split the West forum into Southwest and Northwest. Urumqi might be the most important city in Northwest, don't you agree?

Are you ruling out Xi'an now? Or would you really say Urumqi is more important?

excluding Xi'an.

Xi'an is more important indeed but I wrongly put it in central in my mind.
