Akshay Sangolli wins award for his New Urban Model in America

Quote:
An innovative design for a downtown Austin, Texas senior urban housing facility created by Akshay Sangolli, a Master of Architecture student at Texas A&M, earned a merit award the American Institute of Architect’s New Urban Models For Aging competition.

Sangolli was one of six Aggie architecture students recognized in the competition that tasked participants with designing a dynamic, highly functioning urban housing community for seniors of varying health care needs. The completion called for designs that encourage residents’ activity, interest, excitement and interaction with each other and the surrounding city.

Akshay Sangolli is a Belgaumite who did his schooling from St. Xavier’s High School, his PUC from RLS and Bachelors in Architecture from R V College of Engineering Bangalore. He is currently doing his Masters in Architecture.

Sangolli’s winning project, “urban CARE,” was “intended to function in Austin’s downtown as a functional home for the aged and as a symbol of the vibrancy of the city’s people and culture,” he said. “It’s a space that maximizes interaction among elderly residents and promotes their active involvement in the day-to-day activities of its urban surroundings and vice-versa.”

According to the competition sponsors, AIA’s Design for Aging Committee, participating students investigated a project type that’s part of a burgeoning market in need of innovation.

The living units in Sangolli’s urban CARE entry offer sequential progression between various levels of care: skilled nursing, assisted living and independent living. “The multitude of interactive and congregational spaces,” he said, “ensures the least possible isolation and eases the process of progression between the facility’s various care levels.”

Sangolli’s urban CARE design was recognized in Washington, D.C. during “Celebrate Age,” the Oct. 16-19 annual convention of LeadingAge, an association of more than 5,000 not-for-profit organizations dedicated to expanding the world of possibilities for aging. His design will also be exhibited at the 2011 AIA National Convention and Design Exposition, to be held May 17—19 in Washington DC.

IIM-B placements only on weekends this time
Sruthy Susan Ullas, TNN | Jan 25, 2012, 07.10AM IST

Quote:
BANGALORE: This is the season when all eyes turn to the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs); when the country talks of the towering salary packages and companies that descend on the premier B-school campuses.

IIM-Bangalore has tweaked its placement process this year. Placements 2012 at IIM-B will be held only on weekends.

Hitherto, placements were conducted at one go which would stretch up to a week with no breathing space for students. And for those who failed to get through on the first day, the physical and mental stress would continue during the next days till they got placed. Days used to be long, with as many interviews packed as possible till late night. The process usually lasted for five days.

All that is passe for the Class of 2010 which will move to the corporate world. Classes will be on as usual during the rest of the week. The placement process for 2012 will be thus held on February 18 and 19, then on 25 and 26 and the following weekends.

"We do not want the process to be rushed, but space it out giving everyone ample time to make decisions. The process used to take around 5-6 days when we had 250 students. The number of days remained the same even later when we had 350 students. Imagine the rush! However, in this process, the order of how companies come will remain the same," said Sapna Agarwal, head, career development services, IIM-B.

At the summer placements this year, where first years students are placed for internships, the institute tried tweaking the system by giving a one-day break. "Everybody was happy with the break. So we thought of going ahead with it in the main placements as well," Sapna said.

Last year, Satish Pradhan, chief, group human resources, Tata Sons, had compared the placements in IIMs to the cattle fair in Pushkar mela in Rajasthan.

JOBCENTRE

Placements will be held on February 18 and 19 and following weekends

Around 120 companies visit IIM-B for final placements

In the initial stages, when concentration of the companies is higher, there will be around 35-40 companies per day.

Indian B-schools turn up trumps
Sruthy Susan Ullas TNN

Quote:
Bangalore: The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Calcutta continue to reign as top B-schools in the country. The trio figures in the top 10 in the Asia-Pacific region. The QS Global 200 Business Schools Report 2012 has put these Bschools, among other Indian institutes, in the global rankings.
IIM-A is at rank 2, IIM-B at rank 5 and IIM-C at rank 8. IIM-A and IIM-C have shown the biggest improvements in employer opinion this year, jumping four places. The Indian School of Business has been ranked 7th, SP Jain Institute of Management and Research 16th and Indian Institute of Foreign Trade 21st.
INSEAD, Singapore, is number one in the region for the third consecutive year. Melbourne Business School, NUS Business School, Singapore, and University of New South Wales are some of the other institutes that feature among the top 10 in the region.
The report provides a detailed overview of the most popular B- schools around the world based on information given by global recruiters. It lists 200 business schools from which employers prefer to recruit MBAs.
According to the report, even though business schools in the US and Europe remain the most popular study destinations for MBA, schools in the Asia-Pacific are growing in popularity. “Business schools in the Asia-Pacific region are looking at the standard of top US and European institutions as indicators of how they compare and where they could improve. Furthermore, the economic growth in some Asian countries, particularly in China and India, has heightened the demand for more accredited business schools in the region in order to train the next generation of successful business leaders,” the report says.

THE REGION’S TOP 10
INSEAD, Singapore IIM-Ahmedabad Melbourne Business School NUS Business School IIM-Bangalore University of New South Wales Indian School of Business IIM-Calcutta China Europe International Business School HKUST Business School

Lack of global enrolment a worry
Bangalore: The QS Global 200 Business Schools Report 2012 says: “IIM-B has shown gradual improvements in the ratings, climbing from sixth (2009) to fifth (2010), and this year missed the top cluster by just 2.7 points.”
However, the worry is about international student enrolment. “Many of Asia’s business schools lack in international student enrolment, causing concern among employers looking for graduates to work in a multinational environment. Exceptions include business schools in Hong Kong and Singapore, and Australia, if looking at the wider Asia- Pacific region,” the report says.
The percentage of international students in IIM-A, IIM-B, IIM-C and ISB is 1, 10, 3 and 5 respectively.

Hyundai Technical Training Academy in Bangalore

Quote:
Southern India, being one of the most important markets for Hyundai Motors India Ltd (HMIL), the country’s second largest car manufacturer and the largest exporter of passenger cars, the company has embarked on new initiatives of technical training for their after-sales support personnel.

In pursuit of the same, HMIL has recently set up a Hyundai Technical Academy (HTA) on the premises of Trident Hyundai (Hosur Road), in Bangalore to bridge the gap between what the industry needs and the curriculum offered in colleges.

The choice of Trident as the venue for HTA has a lot to do with the dealership’s role in technical training activities. The HTA is a well-equipped school and imparts multi-level technical training to technicians from Karnataka and Kerala.

Here, classroom lectures are interspersed with practical training on the shop-floor. Set up in June 2011, the academy, till date has trained 110 students in seven batches, with 15 students per batch.

Hyundai does certification to its dealer technicians as follows:
a) Hyundai H Step 1 – This certification is done by HMIL on completion a capsule training sessions for 13 days. The suitable candidates are selected by the respective dealers sent for this training to RTC. Further to successful training and passing the screening for certification, the individual is considered as “Certified Technician”.

b) Hyundai H Step 2 – This certification is in three parts i.e. Engine, Chassis & Electrical. Each part has a training period of three to five days and further certification screening similar as the one above. The successful candidates are then certified as “Expert Technician”.

c) Hyundai H Step 3 – This is purely practical and viva examinations, followed by a written test more focused on Defect Diagnosing abilities of the individual on the car. Successful candidates are certified as “Master Technician”.

Objective or the necessity

The requirement of the industry is to extend world class after-sales service facilities to customers. The endeavors are always to catch up with the latest technology, continuously getting upgraded into the product. These emerging trends continuously demand very high level of knowledge and technical knowhow.

“In Trident, we are highly focused on this ,whereby scheduled continuous in-house theoretical and practical training are imparted. We also many times take the assistance of Vendors and other experts for these training sessions,” the company said.

In order to revise the syllabus of the technical institutions, Trident representatives have participated and suggested additions of emerging technology for revision of syllabus from time to time. Students who have passed ITI courses in automobile and diesel engineering will find the course ideal for them.

Job Nature

Candidates with academic background of automobile engineering are inducted as Trainee Technicians/Trainee Service Advisors, as found suitable. These candidates are extended on job training both practical and theoretical and are prepared for getting certified to work independently on customer’s car.

The male candidates undergo shop floor training and theoretical training in a phased manner so that they get prepared for Hyundai certification. At the same time gain expertise to independently handle the vehicle for its upkeep and regular maintenance.

The female candidates are also recruited in the same manner and also undergo similar training, however, most of them are absorbed in back office jobs like Warranty in charges, EDP in charges, Stores Assistants and in Final Inspection of the workshop and if found suitable as Service Advisors as well.

Recruiting process

The candidates within the organisation who are working in shop floor, if found suitable, will be considered for to redesignate as trainee service advisor. Minimum diploma candidates are considered for induction as trainee service advisor through a written test followed by an interview.

“Service advisor induction from the industry is generally not practiced in our organisation. However on condition of exigency few are inducted based on past experience and through screening for their skills,” said the company.

Training

The freshers are put under training for a maximum period of one year before the individual is inducted to perform duties related with customer interface as service advisor.

The general schedule for the said training is as follows: Four-month extensive training on shop floor to understand the activities pertaining to different departments. In between shop floor training, periodically, trainings are scheduled for development of soft skills and languages.

On completion of above said training period, a written and oral test is conducted to assess the development of skills. If found suitable during the screening, the individual is inducted to front office activities as an assistant to an experienced senior service advisor.

Talking to Deccan Herald, Trident Automobiles Pvt Ltd General Manager (Service) G Ramdev said, “The last fifteen years have seen an unprecedented influx of technology into the Indian automobile sector. It is difficult to fathom the leap from the pre-war technology of the Ambassador to the Mercedes and BMWs.

While the Indian consumer has reveled in this flood of technology, our human capital to maintain and support the same has not kept in pace. Consequently, the after-sales support functions of the automobile industry have been at the receiving end of customer dissatisfaction.”

Challenges

In spite of best efforts to get maximum fresh diploma candidates, at times, Trident finds it a little difficult to get suitable candidates to fill in the vacuum. The reason being, most of the diploma candidates from city colleges are degree aspirants (reserved CET quota helps them), from the remaining, many of them are picked up by manufacturers.

According to estimates, 40 to 50 per cent of diploma students in rural institutes are BE aspirants. 10 to 15 per cent candidates generally have some subjects as backlog and many of them wish to clear their backlogs before joining for a job. 15 per cent of the candidates will be willing to continue traditional jobs are in family business. 10 to 15 per cent candidates who have done well in diploma are picked up by manufacturers either for field services or for production activity. 5 per cent are girl candidates and relocating is a problem for them.

Expansion plans

Trident Hyundai is giving a facelift to its pioneer workshops, namely Yeswanthpur and Indiranagar which are being upgraded with ultramodern amenities so as it matches with the best of infrastructural facility in the industry.

A massive 3S facility with ultramodern equipments at KR Puram will be made operational shortly during the first quarter of the current calendar year 2012.
Plans are in pipeline for new facilities at Davangere, Shimoga and Tumkur.

After Madhuri's, dentists dish up Priyanka Chopra's smile
Hetal Vyas, TNN | Feb 21, 2012, 04.12AM IST

Quote:

BANGALORE: Madhuri Dixit's smile, which stole millions of hearts in the 1990s, may no longer be a hit. Priyanka Chopra pearlies are in-her smile, that shows only teeth and not the gums, is all the rage. And orthodontists in the city are regularly doing a Priyanka on young and to-be married girls.

Women, mostly in the marriageable age bracket, are visiting clinics to design their smiles before they start meeting prospective grooms, and sometimes, before attending important social functions. Dentists in the city get 200-300 cases every year, where people-mostly women-prefer to undergo one or the other kind of cosmetic dental surgery. Says Dr Shraddha Bahirwani, aesthetic dentist, Manipal Hospital: "Girls, especially those of marriageable age, aspiring models and air-hostesses are conscious about their smile. They want it to be perfect, and aesthetic dentistry provides them an option to 'design' their smile according to their face."

City is hub of hybrid heart surgeries
Latest Technology Reduces Hospital Stay And Recovery Period
Hetal Vyas | TNN

Quote:
Bangalore: Heart surgeries are going hybrid in Bangalore. Going innovative in addressing heart ailments like major arterial blockages, big hospitals in the city are conducting advanced hybrid surgeries blending minimally invasive bypass techniques with angioplasty to clear the blockages.
An advanced hybrid surgery is performed over three days: a cardiothoracic surgeon first does a minimally invasive cardiac bypass procedure and two days later, an interventional cardiologist performs an angioplasty to clear the blockage.
The alternative is the traditional bypass surgery involving cutting of the breast bone and making incision in the leg to remove veins. But the hybrid surgery not only translates into less pain but also reduces the four-week recovery period to five days.
Multispeciality hospitals like Narayana Hrudayalaya, Fortis Hospitals and Manipal Hospitals have begun conducting advanced hybrid heart surgeries since early this year. Fortis Hospitals claims to have performed three hybrid coronary artery bypass graft surgeries in the last four months.
Dr Mohammed Rehan Sayeed, consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, Fortis Hospitals, said: “Hybrid surgery is beneficial where patients are highrisk or elderly and might need two procedures with a time gap to remove major blocks and involving multiple vessels. All our hybrid procedures are done through pinhole incisions and are minimally invasive so there is no bone cut, less blood loss. The patient can be discharged within five days and get back to work as soon as possible.”
Bangalore's status as a medical tourism hub has resulted in patients from across the world flocking to the city to gain advantage of the cost benefits of advanced hybrid heart surgeries. All three hospitals confirmed at least 5% of their clientele are either foreigners or Indians settled abroad.
“An advanced hybrid surgery costs anywhere between Rs. 2.50 lakh and Rs 6 lakh in India depending on the patient’s complications. In the US, it would cost anywhere between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 1 crore,” said Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, chairman, Narayana Hrudayalaya.
This surgery is costlier because of the cost of the stents. The cost is expected to come down once India starts producing its own stents.
“In congenital heart diseases, hybrid treatment is getting wider acceptance to improve overall outcome. Also in surgeries of the aorta, hybrid treatment is bringing down the overall mortality and morbidity and improving chances of survival,” said Dr Devananda NS, HOD and consultant cardiothoracic surgeon, Manipal Heart Institute.
WHAT IS ADVANCED HYBRID PROCEDURE?
Cardiothoracic surgeon
first performs minimally invasive cardiac bypass by making a small incision between the ribs instead of cutting open the breastbone to reach the heart
After two days, an
interventional cardiologist performs angioplasty
In angioplasty procedure, a catheter with a balloon at its tip is inserted through the groin and taken up to the blocked blood vessel. Balloon is then inflated to open the vessel, deflated and removed. A stent is then placed in the area to help keep the vessel unblocked
CASE STUDY
Jones Yesupadam, 54, a native of Bangalore
and settled in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in
August last suffered a second heart attack in eight years. Diagnosed with major arterial blockages, he would have had to conventionally undergo the routine coronary revascularization surgery (a conventional bypass) involving big incisions and long recovery period. So Jones came to Bangalore, and underwent advanced hybrid coronary
revascularization at Fortis Hospitals. And he was walking on the third day of the surgery and was out of the hospital in five days.

Bangalore is today India’s technological hub supporting a string of tech companies doing cutting edge work not done in many parts of the world. India’s silicon valley is also India’s entrepreneurial capital. Thanks to the stupendous success of people such as Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani and Top Engineering colleges in Karnataka other honchos of Infosys, many bright individuals have taken to starting their own business and have made a success of it.
The story with Chennai is also similar.

Apollo opens clinic in Bangalore suburb

Quote:
Bangalore, March 14 (IANS) Apollo Health & Lifestyle Thursday opened an exclusive clinic in this tech hub to offer healthcare services to residents in an upscale suburb near here, a company official said.
As part of its integrated chain of clinics, the hi-tech facility at Sarjapur, 20 km from the city centre, will provide specialist consultation, diagnostics, preventive health checks and 24-hour pharmacy.
Located in the south-east IT corridor of the city, the well-equipped clinic will have a team of nurses and physicians to meet needs of each patient and provide value added services like counselling.
"As the bustling (Sarjapur) suburb has become a micro market with hundreds of residential apartments, the clinic will cater to the needs of its growing populace with a compassionate team of doctors and nurses," Apollo executive director Sangitha Reddy said on the occasion.
The Chennai-based healthcare major is already operating 91 such hi-tech clinics across the country.
A panel of visiting consultants comprising experts in various specialties is a part of the clinic to provide each patient with need-based healthcare services.
"We have kept the wellbeing of patients as a high priority to offer better services and facilities through our clinics, which are located closer to people," Reddy observed.
Britannia Industries Ltd. managing director Vinita Bali, who unveiled the clinic, said Apollo Clinics have grown to be synonymous with reliable medical care and health services.
The three decade old Apollo Hospitals group has 8,500 beds in 54 hospitals, 1,200 pharmacies and 100 diagnostic clinics, medical business process out-sourcing services, health insurance services and clinical research divisions across the country.

Janalakshmi, Manipal Global Education tie up for financial inclusion institute

Quote:
BANGALORE: Janalakshmi Financial Services and Manipal Global Education Services (MaGE) have launched Janalakshmi-Manipal Institute of Financial Inclusion (JMIFI) in Bangalore. The 3-week residential programme currently offered covers all aspects of basic service delivery to the financially excluded. The institute was inaugurated by union minister of housing and urban poverty alleviation Ajay Maken in the city on Monday. The training will be conducted in vernacular, and jointly by trainers from JFS and faculty of MaGE. Close to 1,000 employees of JFS will enroll for the programme in Bangalore, Maharashtra and NCR.

The country is facing a unique challenge where the requirement is to train approximately 500 million youth joining the labour force by 2020, while the current capacity can only provide training to 10% of this number.

Ramesh Ramanathan, chairman of JFS said, "We see this institute addressing two critical challenges of urbanising India - financial inclusion and good quality employment. Most of our employees we hire have qualifications of only 12th standard, and don't have degree certificates. Their career prospects are therefore limited in the formal sector."

S Vaitheeswaran, MD & CEO, Manipal Global Education Services, said the course will also cover guidelines relevant to microfinance industry.
