1) No not at all!!
2) Well, there are architects, graduates who majored in geography, and civil/transport/environmental engineers who made the switch to planning too. 3) I have never thought of that. My only concern is that whether urban planning/design will become a sunset industry. But I guess jumping to the developer side may be one option. |

Hi I'm a former Urban Planner who has worked in Australia.
The planning we do in Aus is very different from Asia, where we focus more on red tape and reports etc and in Asia is more on urban design etc. I had an interview with the URA (Singapore) a couple of years ago, but i found my skills in writing about design codes in Australia to be more or less useless in the Asian market. Of course I still think there is a chance, but its tough as they don't tend to have much private sector stuff and the jobs are confined to a few government agencies. The Australian planning field has far more roles due to pretty much the fact our system is over bloated and full of red tape where as Singapore, HK etc are more clear cut. For the record - I ended up abandoning the profession and going into finance to make my career more "international" as I found Australian planning skills are only relevent for Aus, New Zealand and UK. If you're keen on the expat life, my opinion is planning is not the job (though I still think its an interesting job). I reckon apply for a job when you graduate, if no luck and you're really keen on working overseas long term, go do a post-grad in a different field. Happy to give more advice, so fire questions away or PM me. |

Internship with URA Singapore
Hi everyone,
I am from Australia, and i am thinking of applying for an internship with URA Singapore. Has anyone here done an internship with them before ? If so, how did you find the experience and what tasks did you do ? And did they ask for your academic results as part of the application process ? Thank you. |

Thank you very much to Frozenzeus for sharing your experiences. I tried to PM you but not sure if the message went through. Please let me know if you got it. Thanks a lot again. |

I would suggest that you apply. It depends on which department/group you're posted to, as different groups do different things. I'm not sure if they ask for your academic results as part of the application process, but just give it a shot. |
