Terminal Catalunya (TERCAT), a member of the Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) Group, is pleased to announce the first vessel call at its new terminal Muelle Prat, signifying the start of the testing phase which will cover all equipment and IT systems. The unloading of containers from the Mediterranean Shipping Company’s MSC Esha ran smoothly demonstrating the successful integration of the terminal equipment with HPH’s proprietary terminal operating system nGen. It is expected that productivity at the terminal will set new standards for the Port of Barcelona. A total of 436 containers were handled, achieving an average productivity rate of 30 moves per crane per hour. Muelle Prat, located at the Port of Barcelona, is the first semi-automated terminal in the HPH global network of ports. The terminal is scheduled to be fully operational during 2013 and when completely built, it will have 1,500 metres of quay, a depth of 16.5 meters and a 100-hectare yard. Muelle Prat terminal is the most technologically advanced port development project in Spain and is capable of serving multiple mega-vessels simultaneously. It has an eight-track railway facility, and the biggest on-dock railway terminal of any port in the Mediterranean connecting it to traffic coming from, and destined for, Southern Europe. |

A great first step. It's funny I know it's a huge terminal but I'm used to seeing the terminals of Hong Kong. Let's hope the next phase can be started soon.
The Spanish government should finally take care of the rail access so Hutchison will commit to the 2nd phase. It's a disgrace that the Spanish ministry of infrastructure dared to show up at the inauguration!

for now they Built a temporary rail connection.
Spanish government always made "problems" to Catalonia in infrastructure... For example : the airport el prat terminal T1 not have connection in metro And Train with the city.(Until 2015-2016) ------------------ Muelle Prat - Aerial view. Last edited by NET.; September 29th, 2012 at 08:17 AM. |

Laing O’Rourke to deliver Hutchison Port Holdings’ Terminal at Port Botany
Wednesday, August 15, 2012 Press Release Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) the world’s leading port investor, developer and operator, has awarded Laing O’Rourke the civil works contract for the new Port Botany Terminal 3. The contract marks the start of the on-ground works of HPH’s A$500 million investment for the development of a new container terminal. Laing O’Rourke will construct an A$150 million civil and rail infrastructure, representing the first phase of the newly reclaimed Botany Bay expansion. Raymond Law, Managing Director of HPH Australasia and North Asia, said: “HPH is committed to delivering a new world-class container handling facility to Sydney. Awarding the construction contract is a significant step towards the creation of a new stevedoring operation in Port Botany.” Laing O’Rourke’s work for the Port Botany project includes the provision of rigid pavement using onsite concrete batching, high voltage substations, structural support for the heavy duty quay and stacking crane systems, rail sidings, drainage and ground improvements. Laing O’Rourke CEO Steve Hollingshead said that this was a significant project and one in which the company was proud to be involved. “Port Botany Terminal 3 is directly related to the growing infrastructure needs of NSW and demonstrates – as we already have done repeatedly at the Port of Newcastle – that Laing O’Rourke is uniquely placed to manage complex integrated port and rail solutions,” Mr Hollingshead said. “Our 30-year history in marine engineering underpins this project supported by our track record in seamlessly delivering infrastructure alongside vital operating sites – such as ports and airports,” he added. Infrastructure South General Manager Paul McNerney welcomed the news and said Laing O’Rourke looked forward to working with HPH to deliver this world-class project. “Port Botany is the country’s second largest port and a key part of the Australian economy and we’re proud to be part of its bright future. We’ll start on site later this year,” Mr McNerney said. Mr Law said, “In addition to the civil works, the new terminal will be installed with our award winning terminal operating system, nGen, together with state-of-the-art container handling equipment.” The terminal is scheduled to begin operations in 2013. |
