Closure of the world's largest span railway-highway bridge

Quote:
2012-09-16 — On Sep. 16th, Huanggang Yangtze River Bridge, the the world’s largest span railway-highway bridge, is finished its closure of main span steel girder. The completion of Huanggang Yangtze River Bridge will realize “seamless connection” of from the full range of road and railway transportation between Huanggang City and Wuhan. Huanggang Bridge is the 6th railway-highway bridge above Yangtze River.

At 10:16, a 70-ton rotary dedicated girder machine accurately lift a steel beam rods to the main bridge final closure, ahead of the construction workers waiting immediately stepped forward, adjust, move, and will soon be a rod pieces fixed on the final closure.

China bridge construction of one of the main the MBEC bear Bridge construction tasks, already five in the Yangtze River railway bridge by it. According to Liu Jiewen, the person in charge of the project department, in order to ensure that the main span steel girder precise closure, researchers for the first time use modern image recognition measurement techniques used in the bridge closure precise measuring.

Huanggang Yangtze River Bridge has length of 4008 meters, is designed for the double-deck, lower for two-way high-speed railway, the upper is four-lane highway. The main bridge’s structure is the twin towers steel truss cable-stayed bridge with double cable planes. Its main span is 567 meters and is the largest one of same type bridge which ever built and is being built.

23 billion is invested in Huanggang Yangtze River Bridge, which started in February 2010, is the trinity control project of Wuhan-Huanggang highway, railway and intercity rail. 10.1 my long holiday trip

I just came back from a driving trip from Shanghai to Mount Daqing National Park. The trip is 310 km long and it went across a couple of amazing sea crossing bridges:

1. Hangzhou Bay Bridge: 36km (longest sea-crossing bridge), open in May 2008;
2. Jintang Bridge: 21km, open in November 2009;
3. Xihoumen Bridge: main span 1650m, world's 2nd longest suspension bridge, open in December 2009;
4. Taoyaomen Bridge: 888m, open in Jan 2006;
5. Xiangqaomen Bridge: 951m, open in Jan 2006;
6. Zhujiajian Bridge 2.9km, open in May 1999;

Here're the photos I collected from the trip.

Trip map (Shanghai to Mount Daqing National Park of Zhoushan Islands)

Partial map, showing the bridges in Zhoushan island linking project

1. Hangzhou Bay Bridge: the longest sea-crossing bridge, many photos of this bridge have been posted before in this forum

I have passed this bridge many times but never had a chance to stop at the observatory tower

2. Jintang Bridge

It should be the 3rd longest sea-crossing bridge in China. It's part of the Zhoushan island linking project initiated in 1999. Zhoushan island linking project phase I and phase II include the construction of 5 bridges and linking highways, totaling 50km and 11.1 billion Yuan. The whole project completed in December 2009. The 5 bridges are Jintang Bridge, Xihoumen Bridge, Taoyaomen Bridge, Xiangjiaomen Bridge and Cengang Bridge(not shown here).

3. Xihoumen Bridge

This bridge is my favorite bridge of China. It's the 2nd longest suspension bridge and definitely one of the most beautiful bridges. I stoped twice (back and forth) on my way to take pictures. I wish I had more time with it and had a closer look. It's a pity the museum for this bridge is not opened yet. I'll re-visit it next time.

4. Taoyaomen Bridge

This is another beautiful suspension bridge, located very close to Xihoumen bridge, driving through this two bridges is a feast to bridge fans

5. Xiangqaomen Bridge

Xiangqaomen Bridge is not a suspension bridge. It's close to Taoyaomen Bridge. The suspension bridge on the far side of below picture is Taoyaomen Bridge.

6. Zhujiajian Bridge

This is the last bridge to my destination. It's not part of the island linking project but it's long and it has historic meaning to local people.

Finally the Mount Daqing National Park

Cheers

(most of the photos were taken in my car while driving)

Just for sake of discussion, I find that suspension bridges that don't use suspender cables on the side spans doesn't have the same, at least to me, eye pleasing appeal that those that have them do. I know you don't need them and to use them strickly for artistic reason doesn't make any sense economically, but being older than a lot here (well I assume I am,,,lol) I'm sorta old school about most things in life. For instance I prefer suspension bridges over cable stayed any day of the week, but thats only my preference.

Yangtze River 2012 Bridge Trip

The following are a select group of images taken during the "China 2012 Yangtze River Bridge Tour" that took place during the month of August in several Western China Provinces. The second annual bridge trip of www.HighestBridges.com took us to nearly all 80 of the Yangtze River Bridge crossings including visits to half of the world's 20 longest suspension and cable stayed bridges. The adventurous journey took us along 2,000 miles / 3,500 kilometers of roads and highways.

We also encountered a lot of overcast and haze that made for some less then best photo opportunities but when the sun did come out we captured all the drama and beauty of the world's greatest river crossings.

We also ventured up one of the Yangtze's greatest tributaries in the form of the Jialing River and in the 3 Gorges region our drive on the new G42 expressway continued to amaze with more then a dozen more giant spans that cross some of the Yangtze's biggest tributaries.

The new Chongqing metro line crossing of the Jialing and Yangtze Rivers necessitated the construction of two separate cable stayed bridges known as Dongshuimen and Qianximen that are separated by a long curving tunnel. The towers were carefully designed by the Chongqing offices of T.Y. Lin International to have a curvilinear shape in all directions that give them a beautiful, signature look despite the extra cost.

The first two cable stayed pipes can be seen in the top center of the tower. There will only be 9 cables on each tower.

Qianximen crosses the Jialing River with just one central tower.

One of the newest bridges across the Yangtze, the Guanyinyan is a wide, steel deck cable stayed bridge with a main span of 436 meters.

One of the world's longer span road and metro rail cable stayed bridges, the Fenfangwuan Bridge will be completed in 2013 with a main span of 464 meters.

The construction staging area below the Fenfangwuan Bridge had been flooded out just prior to our visit. Large bridge sections were tossed around like toys and damaged. Some pieces will probably be repaired while others might have to be completely re-manufactured.

The new Hejiang arch leaps over the Yangtze with a humungous concrete filled steel tubular span of 500 meters. This is just 10% less then the world's longest arches in Chongqing and Shanghai.

The new Jiang Changjiang G93 expressway crossing is impressive for its leap from a high bluff before crossing the Yangtze River on a 410 meter main span.

The brand new Huangyi Yangtze Bridge has a huge, 6-lane main span of 520 meters that is equal in length to Baluarte - North America’s longest span cable stayed bridge.

The uneven tower design has resulted in the south tower measuring a lofty 210 meters tall or about 86.5 meters taller then the 123.5 meter north side tower.

Extradosed bridges are rare outside of Japan. Completed in 2011, the Qiancao is one of the largest of its type with a main span of 248 meters.

With a suspension span of 820 meters, the Nanqi Bridge is the longest crossing of the Yangtze among the 45 bridges located upstream of the 3 Gorges Dam. The G93 crossing will be opening in 2013.

The rarely seen Yibin Pipeline Bridge is one of only two such spans to cross the Yangtze (the other is a cable stayed pipeline bridge near Fuling). The bridge carries 3 different sized pipes across a main span of 516 meters.

Shuangbei is the newest Jialing River road bridge with uneven towers supporting a main span of 330 meters.

On the northern outskirts of Chongqing City the new Caijiajialing Bridge is now the highest metro line bridge in the world carrying line 6 some 100 meters above the Jialing River. The narrow span measures 250 meters.

Jiayue was the second big extradosed bridge of the trip with a main span of 250 meters and was designed by the famous engineering firm of T.Y. Lin International.

The Jialing River gorge has an impressive lineup of road and rail bridges near the city of Beibei.

Can you count all 6 Jialing Bridge crossings?

The latest Chongqing City regional suspension bridge is Yuzui, located on the northeast side of the city to facilitate easy access to the new airport. The main span measures 616 meters.

A year after our 2011 trip we revisited the gargantuan Caijiagou high speed railway bridge with 41 piers including one that reaches a height of 456 feet (139 meters), the largest of any pier on any railway bridge in the world. The massive piers are shaped like the Chinese character 人 to keep the huge structure stable. The total length of the bridge is 1 and a quarter miles or 2.05 kilometers.

Separated by a tunnel from the Caijiagou Bridge, the nearby Xinshuangxian Bridge is the world's 2nd largest railway viaduct with 7 spans of 96 meters perched on piers as tall as 114 meters.

The Wujiang River Bridge near Fuling carries the new Fengfu Expressway high above the river which is partially submerged under the 3 Gorges reservoir. The central span of 320 meters is held up by two towers 200 and 205 meters tall.

The biggest surprise of the trip came in the form of the 788 meter span Qingcaobei Yangtze suspension bridge. With no word of it on any bridge blogs or websites, it was quite a shock to see it off in the distance while traveling along a local highway. This is also the first suspension bridge in the world to have a full sized prestressed approach span. This unique T-beam is composed of two 90 meter spans.

The bridge will be among the highest to cross a river so wide with a deck to water drop of more than 100 meters.

The new high speed rail line will continue traveling east from Chongqing across the HanTangjiatuo truss cable stayed bridge when it opens in 2013.

While we were not entirely surprised to discover a second crossing is now under construction in Fengdu City we never would have guessed the main span would be 680 meters making it one of the 20 longest cable stayed bridges in the world.

The G42 is loaded with so many large beam bridges I am only showing you two of the mightiest over the Tanxihe and Hongshili Rivers. There are more under construction on the east end of the expressway that will not be open until 2013. Tanxihe beam bridge has a central span of 230 meters atop piers 156 meters tall.

The Meixihe River cable stayed bridge carries the G42 high above the 3 Gorges reservoir with a span of 386 meters.

Although you have all seen it before, I could not resist showing the Wushan Yangtze River Bridge once again. With a single leap of 460 meters, this arch is one of the 10 longest of its type and is arguably one of China's most beautiful with the surrounding mountains of the 3 Gorges rising thousands of feet above the river valley.

The highest bridge along the entire G42 is the crossing of the Shennongxi river. The A-frame cable stayed bridge crosses 225 meters above the original river level and 170 meters above the 3 gorges reservoir. The main span is 320 meters and also includes a side beam span of 150 meters.

A view of Wuhan’s latest monster, the 8-lane Erqi Bridge with 2 back-to-back spans that rank among the 20 longest of their type in the world.

Yingwuzhou is Wuhan's latest crossing of the Yangtze with two back to back spans of 850 meters - equivalent to the 2 Tacoma Narrows Bridge spans placed end to end.

The Huanggang Yangtze River road and railway bridge downstream of Wuhan will become the largest of its type when it opens in 2013 with a huge span of 567 meters, surpassing the nearby Tianxingzhou Bridge. That record will be surpassed in 2013 by the Anqing Bridge which is rail only with a span of 580 meters and then in 2015 by the even larger Tongling Yangtze road and rail bridge with a span of 630 meters. No other country in the world has built so many large cable stayed railway bridges.

The eastern section of the Ma'anshan Yangtze Bridge will be arguably one of the most beautiful cable stayed designs along the entire river with 2 back to back spans of 260 meters supported by oval shaped support towers that are the first of their kind in the world.

The Ma'anshan Yangtze suspension bridge is tied with downstream neighbor Taizhou Bridge as having the 2 longest back to back suspension spans on earth. The two leaps of 1080 meters are partially supported by a central tower with a concrete base and a steel tower. This is somewhat different from downstream double span neighbor Taizhou which is made up of an all steel A-frame center support.

Cable spinning on a suspension bridge is an extremely rare process to see in person as there is no more large scale suspension bridge construction going on in either the Americas or Europe.

The Ma'anshan tower tops have a one-of-a-kind cross beam design that looks like wood molding you might see in a doorway.

The Jiangxinzhou Bridge in Nanjing City is a single-tower spatial cable self-anchored suspension bridge with a main span of 248 meters. There are very few bridges of this type in the world. The largest is now under construction in California for the replacement of the San Francisco Bay Bridge Eastern Span.

Opening in 2013, the 4th Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge will be one of the longest span suspension bridges in the world with a tower to tower distance of 1,418 meters. The material within both 229 meter tall towers is mainly concrete, but at the top of each tower there is a unique steel cross-beam arch between the tower legs.

For the second year in a row we managed to tour the top of a major bridge tower. In 2012 we got lucky at the giant Taizhou suspension bridge with its record breaking back to back suspension spans of 1080 meters.

We also visited the many spans of Shanghai as well as the Zhoushan Islands Bridges like Hangzhou Bay, Jintang and Xihoumen shown above. Big-Dog recently did a great update of these giant ocean crossings and there are many images of the Huangpu river crossings elsewhere.

Completed in 2011, the Yongjiang River Bridge is the 8th longest span arch bridge in the world at 450 meters. Similar to the through arch Lupu Bridge in nearby Shanghai, the 2 main ribs are wide at the base and meet eachother 95 meters above the water. The main span was constructed by temporary cable stays connected to towers 150 meters high.

The Qingshuipu Bridge is a rare side by side cable stayed bridge with double diamond towers that support a span of 468 meters. The bridge opened in 2012 and also crosses the Yongjiang River on the outskirts of Ningbo City. The 8-lane deck is 56.7 meters wide made up of steel box sections that are about 27 meters wide.

The images above are a truncated version of my complete coverage of the 3-week trip showing 400 images of the more then 100 bridges we visited that you can link to below.
http://highestbridges.com/wiki/index...ip_Photo_Album

Come along for an even more exciting Chinese adventure in 2013 when we visit 12 of the world's 13 highest road spans including first ever construction site visits to the highest road and railway bridges on earth along with more then 50 other towering gorge busters!
