Only a handfull of cities like NYC, Boston, Detroit, Philly, LA and Chicago were bigger.
According to the 1950 census, Buffalo was #15. I am not sure how the metro size ranked though.

Buffalo was the 9th largest city in the country at the turn of the century, and had the most millionaires per capita in the country. From 1950 on the city shrunk in population by half, but the metro has grown a little up to 1980 or so.

Buffalo (city limits) 1900- pop. 352,000
Toronto (old city limits) 1901-pop. 208,000

Buffalo (city limits) 1920- pop. 506,775
Toronto (old city limits) 1921- pop. 521,900

As a Torontonian, and die hard Bills fan, I say, "well said".

The Bills games I attend in Buffalo always leave me with good memories and an experience that cannot be reproduced in Toronto. As a die hard Leafs fan (cue mocking here) I am ALWAYS disappointed at the quiet and boring nature of home Leafs games at the ACC....and this is supposed to be the shrine of hockey!!!

All the REAL fans have been priced out of the ACC (or at least the lower bowl) instead they come to Buffalo when the Leafs are in town. Those are my favorite Sabres games, I LOVE going when the Leafs are in town. The atmosphere is unbelievable with both teams diehard fans at the game.

I've been living in Toronto for 11 years now and have yet to experience good atmosphere at any sporting event in the city. I don't know what it is about the population here, but high schools in the Maritimes create better game day atmosphere than Toronto.

Leafs, Raptors, Jays, Argonauts, college, high school, etc. The atmosphere is terrible at all of them. Lots of choices, but it's the worst sports city I've ever been in.

I hope your stadium gets built and the Bills stay in Buffalo for another 100 years. Toronto certainly would ruin that franchise if they ever got their hands on it.

btw from Higgins offical twitter account: Ohio street project is offically happening.

Why would Higgins / NY state fund this for no reason. I think this further proves that something is happening on the outer harbor. AKA Bills new stadium

If the Buffalo Bills are gonna build a new stadium, I wonder if there is anything wrong with the existing Ralph Wilson Stadium or if it is outdated in any way.

That's big news! Not necessarily for the stadium, but for access to the outer harbor! I'll get to walk to Pearl Street.

Actually bothering to read this thread would give you the answer to that.

yeah but that was a part of this stadium / convention center plan for Ohio Street to have access into and out of the City.

I see this as a good sign! A small but important step. Access to and from the stadium was already considered an issue.

Yeah but that proposal has been around a long time, it will help access to the stadium for sure, but that was not the original plan.

There are no official plans for this stadium yet, how can you call it a copy when it doesn't exist? Especially when the proposal doesn't look anything like the Sao Paulo stadium.

Pitch to Union for New Bills Stadium

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Bills could get a new, 72,000 seat stadium right on Buffalo's outer harbor.

"Then Buffalo will be put back on the map. Where it should be," Greater Sports & Entertainment Complex President, Nicholas J. Stracick told YNN.

The Greater Buffalo Sports and Entertainment Complex unveiled its plan in October that includes a retractable roof and a hotel. Their idea was presented to AFL-CIO union members Tuesday night where no cameras allowed.

"If we believe it's viable, we get behind it and we help with it as much as we can," Buffalo AFL-CIO President, Michael Hoffert said.

Developers say it would create 10 thousand construction jobs right off the bat.

"We're also looking at all the spin off development that would be affiliated with that and keep our construction people working for a number of years," Hoffert continued.

The current stadium more than 40 years old, while Bills' owner, Ralph Wilson, is 94 years old. Both facts fuel many people's desire to have an attractive facility to make sure the Bills stay in Buffalo.

"There's nothing else in this city. Nothing," Stracick said.

Stracick explained he's got a list of up to 15 private, secret sponsors and the NFL that'll come up with the $1 billion for the new stadium. No tax money needed.

"Nobody's going to have to put any money in. Nobody. No, no, no taxes. Nothing from nobody," he said.

Another 4 million would have to come from the state for infrastructure, according to Greater Buffalo Sports & Entertainment officials.

But first, Stracick said, the outer harbor land the new stadium would sit on needs to be handed over to the City of Buffalo from the NFTA.

"We need to have that land. We can't even talk about stadiums or projects or development," Buffalo Assemblyman Michael Kearns (D) told YNN.

But with no land deal made yet, it's still early in the game for a final deal on a new stadium.
http://jamestown.ynn.com/content/top...-bills-stadium

If Stracick's words are true, then it sounds like a no-brainer for Buffalo does this.
