Overnight downpour slows Dubai traffic

Nov 22, 2012

DUBAI// Heavy rain in Dubai forced motorists to be extra careful during rush hour traffic this morning.

The overnight downpour began in the early hours of the morning and ended at around 6.30am. It was largely restricted to New Dubai and Jebel Ali.

Particularly affected were the Greens, Tecom, Media City, Dubai Marina, JLT as well as parts of Discovery Gardens. There were also reports of light rain in and around Global Village.

The rainfall in Dubai took some forecasters at the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) in Abu Dhabi by surprise. “We had reports of slight to moderate rain over Jebel Ali at around 5am,” said a forecaster at the centre. “We have not had reports of rain in Dubai itself but it’s a nice surprise.”

Moderate rain was also reported on Emirates Road and the main road between Al Ain and Dubai. Motorists experienced slightly longer traffic queues into Media City as drivers slowed down as a precaution.

There was moderate flooding in parts of the Springs and Meadows, affecting the flow of traffic as some areas were down to one lane instead of two.

Rain hits parts of UAE including Dubai

The day will be cloudy with chances of heavy rain along with thundershowers in may areas
Gulf News Web report

Published: 09:02 November 30, 2012

Dubai: Rain hits parts of UAE including Dubai and Sharjah while some areas experienced moderate to heavy showers early Friday.

The day will be cloudy with chances of heavy rainfall along with thundershowers in many areas, said the weather office on Friday. Night will be particularly cold with chances of rain. On Saturday, partly cloudy atmosphere is expected to prevail with chances of rain in the morning. Sunday and Monday will be partly cloudy.

Earlier, unsettled weather has on Thursday turned the Arabian Gulf waters rough along with strong winds kicking up dust and sand in different parts of the country.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (MCMS) has issued a weather alert advising people to be aware of windy and dusty conditions and the rough sea. Horizontal visibility could also drop in some areas.

The weather will be partly cloudy in general and the clouds will increase in different areas by the afternoon. There are chances of rain in the northern and coastal areas along with the UAE islands in the Arabian Gulf by evening and Thursday night.

Daytime temperate has dropped to 25 degree Celsius as cold winds have been sweeping through the country. Forecasters have warned people saying that it can go down to 10 C in the mountainous areas at night. It will however hover around 15 C in the coastal areas.

Frost to hit parts of the UAE as wintry weather persists

The National staff

Jan 15, 2013

DUBAI // Mountain areas are expected to be hit by frost later in the week as the wintry weather continues, according to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology.

The centre has warned that the sea will remain very rough today because of strong winds that could reach 60km/h along the coast.

Conditions will be hazy, and some parts of the country will be cloudy. Sand and dust in the air will cause poor visibility at times.

The maximum temperature is expected to be between 20C and 23C, while minimum temperatures will range from 10C to 14C on the coast to 1C in mountaneous areas.

The outlook for tomorrow is similar, and there is a chance of light rain towards the end of the week. The amount of cloud is expected to increase in the northern emirates.

People shiver in the bitterly cold nights

Health experts advise people to stay warm and avoid open areas to keep illness at bay

By Aftab Kazmi, Bureau Chief
Published: 20:22 January 20, 2013

Weather has brought the season’s coldest nights, especially in the intland desert areas, where temperature has dropped down to around 2 degree Celsius.
Forecasters have warned people to wear warm clothes and avoid staying in desert camps or open places overnight to avoid seasonal ailments.

Similar conditions are expected to continue for the next couple of nights at least.
Clear skies and bright sunshine have, however, added a couple of degrees in the daytime temperature, making it pleasant for outdoor activities.

Health experts have advised people to take hot drinks and avoid ice cream and other cold items as a precaution against flu and the common cold. They said many people have already been suffering from coughs and colds, particularly children. People with asthma should also wear warm clothes and stay away from dusty and windy places.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), the coldest place in the country on (Saturday night) was Damsa, a locality some 35km in the west of Al Ain.

The other coldest places in the emirates are Raknah, which recorded 3.5C at night, Hamim (4.2C), Al Wathba (4.9C), and Al Shuweib (5C).

The heavy fog in Emirates road in Dubai

A spell of unstable weather is expected to sweep into the country from Wednesday, bringing in cold Shamal (north-westerly) winds and inducing scattered rain in the Northern Emirates.

The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) has forecast that the temperature will drop in general with the weather ranging from cloudy to hazy, especially in the western regions of the country. There is also a good chance of rain on the UAE islands in the Arabian Gulf, with rough sea conditions predicted for Wednesday. Wind speeds are likely to pick up from time to time.

The daytime temperature is expected to witness a slight increase on Tuesday, but conditions on Tuesday night will remain cold in the mountainous and inland areas, according to the NCMS.

Over the last several days, temperatures have been hovering in the range of 26 degree Celsius after rising five to six degrees across the country. The night-time weather has, however, been generally cold and humid, with fog being reported in several areas.

There have been reports of sporadic showers and light rains in parts of Dubai this Wednesday afternoon, with the amount of cloud cover increasing across the emirate.

UAE’s official weather forecaster, the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), forecasts an increase in the cloud cover as the day progresses. “Partly cloudy weather over some areas, cloud amount will increase over some areas, especially over the Island and northwards with a chance of rain,” the NCMS reckons for the day.

The BK cops another hit! Unreal...looks great but I sure would hate to me inside when something like that hits! Makes great pics and something I don't mind if it's no where near to where I am! Rain's great but storms can be quite destructive at times and that's what you don't want to occur. Thanks for sharing! Straight from the camera...great stuff

Well, BK's well grounded, the designers knew they would have to contend with lightning, so in tall buildings, they tend to work out ways to ground all that juice while keeping the building and its electrical systems safe.

Oh I'm definitely aware how the engineers must have worked to get this one right! Saw the plans of the building as it was in the news and I'm sure it's was posted on the BK thread... I was moreso talking about how it makes a great picture very effective. From a personal viewpoint, I would not like to experience being there if it did strike, just me.. you never know your luck and coming from my side of the fence I not like to tempt fate....personally I'm not one for taking lifts and I will avoid them if possible and I certainly don't like heights and the idea of being in a lift during a storm well I really don't like the idea at all.....have experienced being stuck in a lift between floors and it was not great considering it took several hours, it was the middle of summer and no air circulating, so no not so pleasant...I was surprised that a hospital where I was visiting at the time didn't have a key on site and it was with the security guard and they had left for the evening so you can imagine I was not impressed...

Hopefully one of these days I'll be able to share the video I took when on the top of the pinnacle and a sandstorm hit. Now that was an experience and a half, I can tell you.
