Elburg is a medieval town that was planned by one man (Arend Thoe Boecoop) and build in four years (1392-1396); the church however was finished one year later. The planning was necessary since an older city named Elburg was lost after a flood - the short time the reconstruction took indicates that Elburg was a rich and important town in those days. After the medieval era Elburg fell into decline and was not modernized anymore. Today it's amazingly well preserved.

Bologna, Italy. After Venice, it is considered to have the biggest and best preserved medieval historical centre in Europe. The urban layout is unchanged from the XIIIcentury, the city still retains a vast amount of medieval buildings, including some spectacular "tudor-style" timber houses and magnificent palazzi from the Renaissance and later periods of prosperity. Not to mention its many towers...Enjoy!

Someone posted some pics of Cittadella...and what about Montagnana, then? It can compare to Spanish Avila for the stunning preservation of its medieval walls.

Rovigno has been shaped by the Venetians and that's how it looks like. It doesn't look anything like spanish cities, it's very similar to other venetian cities in Italy like Caorle. Mediterranean cities in Croatia are for istance Dubrovnik or Zadar itself, which don't strictly look italian. Rovinj, like most of western Istria, has indeed a venetian shape and its connection to the north east of Italy is still strong. The Major of Rovinj is of italian origins.
By this I don't mean Istria should be given back to Italy...history just fucks up things and you can't pretend nothing has changed.

Cittadella, Montagnana, Marostica, Palmanova, Soave, Sirmione, Castelfranco, Villafranca...North East of Italy is full of well preserved fortified cities
