Facade re-cladding. What do you think of rainscreens?

Hi! I am currently doing research into façade refurbishment and its architectural impact. My main case study is the Glasgow University Library which is undergoing recladding at present and seems to be a controversial subject right now. This article give a gist of what it's all about:

I would really be interested to hear your thoughts on the subject. Is this a good thing or a bad thing architecturally? What might you do instead?

I personally think that, in order to prevent the mistakes made by our past generations, we should preserve those buildings that will soon become historic. If a change in apearance is needed, then, that the remodelation is simple and can be removed if the previous style of the original building is apreciated by later generations in the future.

They're rectifying problems in it's construction. If they didn't we wouldn't have the building in the future anyway. They're preserving it, not demolishing it.
