GÄVLE | Projects & Construction

There are a few interesting projects going on in Gävle so I though I'd start a thread for the town.

Kvarteret Mumman
Re-development of low-density industrial area near the railway tracks, approved in Oct 2012. Project presentation (in Swedish) and a conceptual flyover video are avalible.

Great thread start by the way. Keep up the work.
Sorry, I took a shortcut! I have the images in hi-res so I'll re-upload them later on.

Amazing to see such developments in what is (by international standards) a very small city. The first shot is amazing.

Will this be close to Fullriggaren? Here's hoping for potential Skyline photos!

Yes, it will be built further out the pier and in a diagonal axis with Fullriggaren.

Hey!
As I said when I made the two photo threads about Gävle, I was thinking of making a projects thread for Gävle also. But now I see some one beat me to it
Hope I can ad some projects and proposals in to this thread instead now?

I thought I should start with presenting the what I would say is the 5 really big ongoing or up coming projects here in Gävle.
Most of these are really big and important for Gävle and the entire region, but some of you might not see them as super fun and exciting.
But hope they can interest some of you a bit at least.

1. Mackmyra Whiskeyby.
The world unique gravitation distillery for the Swedish, Mackmyra whiskey, but also a "visitors and experience centre". When completed it will almost be like a "theme park"
A super nice and cool project, one only could have imagined a few years ago! So nice to see it being realised by this local company created by a couple of entrepreneurs and "whiskey nerds" some what 10 years ago

Budget for the whole "wiskeyby" at least 500 million sek.

Some pics.

The gravitation distillery when just completed, 33 meters high.

2. The expansion of Gävle hamn, Port of Gävle.
Since 5-10 years back the Port of Gävle is really booming, and there is a huge investment plan, including everything from rail and road projects, new terminals and docks, wherehauses, offices and so on...
The port have recently got the assignment to handle (all?) the flight fuel for Arlanda and lots of orders for the export of iron ore (and other metals) from many of the new mines being opened in mid Sweden. Since waaay back they handle much of Sandviks, SSABs, Korsnäs, Stora Enso ect... exports.

From Gävle hamns own homepage:
"Port of Gävle is the heart of imports and exports on the east coast.
This is where wood and steel sets it´s way out in the world, as well as coffee and oil enter Sweden.
A logistics hub for the coordination of ships, trains, cars, container
and intermodal traffic."

Budget: not sure but all in all way over one billion sek.

An additional rail connection:

3. Not the most fun project but still important in the long term, for the
Korsnäs mill. A new bio power plant have just been completed for over one billion sek! It will also deliver some heating to the local district heating network. Korsnäs mill in Gävle is one of Europe's largest liquid packaging board/carton-mills (they make some paper to)

Budget: Over one billion sek.

Pic taken by me, the new bio power plant under construction to the left.

4. New Ikea.
Gävle have had an Ikea for ages (early 70´s I think?) but today it is one of the smallest in Sweden. You know how many towns have got new Ikea´s recently: Uppsala, Sundsvall, Västerås and so on (often right next to the old one just how they plan to build it in Gävle also...)
This project will also include lots of new "big box" shops built by Ikano and KF-fastigher, and also an new motorway interchange and other infrastructure.

Budget: ?

How the area looks today, Valbo köpcentrum and köpstad:

In the future? :

5. Expansion of Gävle hospital.
Landstinget Gävleborg, the county(?) of Gävleborg, have decided to make big investments in new constructions the up coming years.

Budget: Over one billion sek. And like 80-90 % will be spent on Gävle hospital.

The first big project is the new "operation/surgery block" which is being built right now.

One nice up coming project here will be a 6-7 storey addition to the main entrance block, today 5 storeys (built 2003-4?).

New "surgery block":

How the high rise part of the hospital looks today (backside...):
I actually think Gävle hospital looks quite nice for being a 70´s hospital, some of them can look really horrible!

Two other big and important projects, which I decided didn´t qualified to the "top 5"

*The expansion of Gävle´s second big external shopping centre "Hemlingby köpcentrum", in the southern outskirts of Gävle, is under going continues expansion also, but I wouldn´t consider it as important as the expansion of Valbo köpcentrum with the new Ikea. But still.

*And next year Trafikverket will FINALLY start building the last missing piece of the railroad to Stockholm which is not double tracks yet. It´s such a short stretch it´s almost stupid it had to take this long for this little missing piece... It´s a ~3,5 kilometre stretch through Furuvik just south of Gävle.
It will include a 200 meter rail bridge, and some rebuilding of the road network, including riksväg 76 in Furuvik. This will also make more room for Furuviksparken´s camping to expand.

So for you who managed to read this entire post I think I will keep adding other projects here in the future.
Just thought I would start off with presenting these big, important ones.
And I think there will be more residential projects in the upcoming posts.
Since I think I know many of you here ain´t super keen on infrastructure, industrial and shopping centre projects, right ?

This is something surprising (at least, for me). Judging from the view seen in the picture and some additional information, it seems that there was a tram network in Gävle in the past century:

Thank you very much for sharing the link to the source with some interesting information. It is quite amazing to see how many tram systems existed in Sweden during the past century.

Yep, most major Swedish cities had tram networks back in the beginning of the 1900´s. But in the 1950-60´s car oriented planning age pretty much all but Göteborg and Norrköping got rid of them, in favor for more room for the cars!

Here are a few nice old pics of trams in Gävle

This last one is one of my favorite old Gävle photos, I have a framed version hanging in my apartment

Was it also the change from left to right traffic that also killed off the tram networks too or was that just an excuse during that time?

More investments can make port of Gävle more competitive.
