Sharjah gets new giant musical fountain

Spectacular shows begin at Dh120m Sharjah musical fountain

By Mariam M. Al Serkal, Staff Reporter
Published: 21:00 February 25, 2012

Sharjah: Residents and visitors to Sharjah can now enjoy watching eight daily spectacular shows by the giant musical fountain at Al Majaz Waterfront, the flagship and largest tourism project developed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq).

The first musical shows of the fountain kicked off last Friday in the presence of Shaikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Shurooq, and Marwan Jasem Al Sarkal, chief executive of Shurooq.

The shows received applause and admiration of the audience at Al Majaz Waterfront to enjoy the first shows of the Sharjah Musical Fountain.

The Sharjah musical fountain, the largest of its kind in the region, is 220 metres wide and will shoot water up to 100 metres into the air.

It has two giant water screens, and is equipped with the latest sound and light techniques. It will have different musical and laser shows, with laser arrangements and eight video projections on water screens, every day.

Huge attraction

"The musical fountain will become a landmark attraction in Sharjah, and it will have eight daily shows with various musical and laser arrangements and video projections on water screens," Al Sarkal added.

The Al Majaz Waterfront, which was opened to the public last year, is located between Jamal Abdul Nasser Street and Khalid Lagoon Corniche, a vital residential and commercial district with an estimated population of 100,000 people. It is expected to attract a large number of Sharjah's residents, visitors and tourists.

The project, which is valued at Dh120 million, spreads across an area of 231,000 square feet.

The Al Majaz Waterfront project includes musical fountains, ten restaurants and cafes, jogging areas, cycling routes, a distinguished mosque, art and sculpture park and a splash park.

There will also be 1,000 parking spaces, covered areas for entertainment and cultural activities, open and covered areas for children, a mini golf court, kiosks for snacks and soft drinks, walking areas and green spaces, amenities and public utilities.

The waterfront is equipped with a 4,700 square metre food court on the banks of the lagoon opposite the dancing fountain.

"The Splash park is the only recreational facility that will open by May because it is inconvenient to have children playing about with water in this cool weather. Once it gets hotter, children will benefit more from the water game," Al Sarkal noted.

The 800-square metre Splash park will be a fully automated, zero-depth aquatic play area suitable for the entire family, from toddlers through to adults, as well as for children with special needs. The state-of-the-art technology will optimise water consumption through sequenced activation and low-flow nozzle technology.

Show timings

The daily shows begin from 8.30pm and run until midnight, at an interval of 30 minutes. Each show lasts from five to 10 minutes.

A place to unwind after a hard day

Al Majaz Waterfront adds a touch of gloss to Sharjah’s Buhaira Corniche and is already on visitors’ ‘must-visit’ list. On weekends, the place comes alive with the laughter of children. The vibrant flowerbeds add colour to the area on lazy afternoons. The place has something for everyone — cafes, a mini golf course, children’s play area, jogging and cycling tracks. As the sun sets leaving behind a crimson hue, the colourful dancing fountains hold spectators in thrall. Staff photographer Atiq-Ur-Rehman captures the essence of Sharjah’s newest landmark

Shurooq to raise UAE colours 123 metres high to mark 41st National Day

2012-11-20 14:01:28

WAM Sharjah, Nov 20th, 2012 (WAM) -- The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq), in collaboration with the Sharjah Department of Public Works and a number of government bodies and departments, is constructing a 123 metre-high flagpole on Flag Island to mark UAE's 41st National Day.

The island is located opposite the area previously known as "Montazah Al Jazeera" facing the governmental buildings in the emirate of Sharjah. The flagpole in the Flag Island is considered to be the 7th tallest flagpole in the world, according to Shurooq.

The flagpole will be completed on the 25th November with the flag set to be raised on December 2nd, the UAE's 41st National Day.
