The city is fast becoming one of the favourite destinations for international artistes and music outfits. The last two years have seen a very interesting line-up of artistes.

The reason, we're sure, is Pune's love for music, creativity and all things good. On Sunday evening, fans of rock music made sure to head to this gig at a cafe-lounge at Koregaon Park.

An American alternative rock band, from San Francisco, took centrestage and pumped up the energy with their hits like Semi-Charmed Life, How's It Going To Be?, Jumper and Deep Inside of You. The place was packed and the crowd hummed along with lead singer Stephan Jenkins. Brad Hargreaves, the drummer of the band, wowed all with his solo act.

The cheers refused to die down and this only encouraged the band members to belt out some more hits. The current line-up of the band is Stephan (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Brad (drums, percussion), Kryz Reid (lead guitar) and Jon Pancoast (bass guitar). A big thumbs-up to their performance; definitely calls for an encore!

Lodha launches resort-style residential project near Pune
The Lodha group, India’s leading real estate developers, has launched Lodha Belmondo, a five-star resort style residential project spread over 108 acres, opposite the Subrata Roy Sahara Cricket Stadium, at the start of the Pune-Mumbai expressway, near Pune.

The Mumbai-based developer is building 1,900 units, offering one, two, three-BHK apartments, four-BHK sky duplexes, independent bungalows and golf villas, with a total investment of Rs 1,400 crore in two phases. The company is raising the money through internal accruals and sales.

“In the first phase, we will build 1,100 homes, which will be ready for possession in 27 months from now,” Abhinandan Lodha, deputy managing director of the Lodha group told Financial Chronicle. Prices of these residences will vary from Rs 4,000 to Rs 9,000 per sq ft depending on the location. One-BHK unit with a 670 sq ft area will cost around Rs 37-38 lakh, while a two-BHK apartment with 1,300 sq ft area will cost around Rs 63 lakh. The independent 6,000 sq ft villas will carry a price tag between Rs 7 crore to Rs 10 crore depending on the location.

“We have partnered with Evason, the world’s premier hospitality group and Greg Norman, member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and expert golf course designer, to take luxury resort lifestyles homes to new heights,” Lodha claimed. Lodha Belmondo also boasts of a 50,000 sq ft clubhouse and spa by Evason and a 45-acre nine-hole riverside golf course designed by Norman.

“Out of 100-acre expanse along the river Pavana, 90 acres will be open spaces, charming water bodies and leafy pathways to create luxury lifestyle,” Lodha claimed.

The project will also provide space for sports, like golf, cricket and tennis, as well as for spiritual pursuits, like yoga and meditation. It will also provide and restaurants of the highest culinary standards. \

Pune, Maharashtra’s second largest city after Mumbai, has been a hub for the engineering industry for over five decades. But it is in the last two odd decades that it has seen a virtual metamorphosis, evolving from a quiet peaceful town that offered harried Mumbaikars a pleasant weekend getaway to a mini metro bustling with industrial activity.

Today, Pune wears many caps — leading IT destination, logistics hub and a renowned centre for the auto, design and white goods industries, amongst others.

On the industrial front, the progress first began with the setting up of Kirloskar Oil Engines, Tata Motors and Bajaj Auto in the 1950s and 1960s. The Swedish Group Sandvik Asia, Atlas Copco, Alfa Laval, SKF Bearings followed suit andwere amongst the earliest settlers on the erstwhile two-lane Bombay-Poona Road.

Industrial activity grew gradually as more units were established, including Finolex Cables, Forbes Marshall, the now defunct Garware Nylons and Bajaj Tempo (now Force Motors), amongst others on the same stretch. The road itself is now a wide four-lane boulevard with a series of underpasses and fly-over bridges to ensure a smooth, unhindered drive from the city centre to its industrial outskirts.

The proliferation of the auto industry gave a fillip to a host of auto ancillaries to mushroom. The Pune region has a buzzing auto components industry ranging from innumerable micro, small and medium scale units to Bharat Forge, now the largest forgings company in the world.
IT revolution

With the coming of the Information Technology Age, the last decade of the 20{+t}{+h} century saw Pune discover newer pastures. The Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) set up a software technology park where many IT businesses were incubated. The State government persuaded home grown IT major Infosys into setting up base at the freshly minted IT industrial estate of Hinjewadi, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Around the same time, Anand Deshpande, returned from overseas to set up Persistent Systems, while Ravi Pandit established the forerunner to what is now KPIT Cummins. A significant part of the success of these enterprises, and a multitude of smaller IT and ITES companies can be attributed to the skill sets generated within the city.

In the years since, almost every significant name on the national and international IT map has set up a campus here — Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Cognizant, IBM, Mphasis, Veritas, BMC Software to name a few - have set up large campuses, and a large fraction of India’s IT revenue is generated from the Pune region.

While India’s largest vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors and second largest two-wheeler maker Bajaj Auto have been residents of Pune for decades, it was the arrival of global OEMs like Mercedes Benz, Piaggio, Skoda, General Motors, Volkswagen and Fiat that helped forge its identity as an important destination in India’s, and, indeed the world’s auto story. Predictably, there are many elements to Pune’s growth story and its now significant position on the Indian industrial chart.

In addition to its geographical advantages, the importance of its proximity to Mumbai and accessibility to ports for the entry and exit of raw materials and finished goods cannot be understated. And of course, it is much cheaper to set up a business here than in any of the metros.

The setting up of new well planned industrial estates by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation in the last few years has helped manufacturers find land for setting up of units. This has also played a major role in the development of Pune as an industrial hub. MIDC’ss industrial estates at Ranjangoan, Hinjewadi, Hadapsar and in the Talegaon-Chakan belt, are relatively recent feathers in Pune’s cap.

An integral part of the eco-system needed for the proliferation of industry is the adequate availability of unskilled, skilled and managerial workforce and opportunities for recreation for its employees. The large number of institutions of higher learning, are supported by the presence of several Industrial Training Institutes that churn out an industrially trained labour force. To boot, the city has seen no significant labour troubles for over 25 years.

Its quiet expensive in an area which is considerable outside. 4000 psft is still fine but 9000 psft is insane in that area when they can get relatively cheaper rate within the city limits. I think that is only for bunglows. But still there will be people ready to pay 10 crores for it

Merger of villages likely to get delayed

PUNE: With the ruling Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) strongly opposed to the merger of 28 villages the state Urban Development Department (UDD) is in tizzy.

A day after taking charge as the guardian minister of Pune district, Ajit Pawar rebuffed chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and opposed the state government's notification to merge 28 villages in the limits of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Pawar quit the cabinet on September 25 while the state Urban Development Department (UDD), under the chief minister, issued a notification of merger on October 11. Pawar chaired the meeting of the district planning and development council (DPDC) in the city recently and put on hold the CM's decision to merge the villages in PMC limits.

"The Pune civic administration has already put a question mark on the merger. The civic administration has tabled a report before the civic law committee that merger should be allowed only after the state assures additional water and financial assistance" said one of the senior state officials. He added that the state UDD is waiting for the " consensus" on the merger before initiating further step.

The Pune civic administration is toeing Ajit Pawar's line. Speaking at the recent DPDC meeting Pawar had said that merger is not possible without additional water. "Of the many considerations, water supply is a major concern. Merger will not happen till the city gets sufficient quota of drinking water. Till all the issues are sorted out, there is no question of merger," said Pawar at the meeting.

However at the same time Pawar has announced that Pune will not get any additional quota of water. Interestingly the Congress has supported Pawar's stand. The city Congress and party MLA's have questioned the merger and demanded that the chief minister should not take any " hasty" decision.

The state government issued notification for the merger on October 11 and had given a month for suggestions and objections. The notification had come as the PMC was unable to take a decision on the merger proposal, which has been pending since 2010.

With Pawar putting a spanner, the entire process is likely to be delayed. Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar had aired similar objections. At a function organized in the city, Pawar senior had raised doubts about the actual implementation of the merger idea. He had said that he will ask the CM to have a word before going ahead with the plan.

Ideally these villages should have been mearged long back as they are already filled with 8-12 floor buildings with pathetic infra.
City is expanding so the civic body limits needs to expand as well. Already the villages like Ambegaon is having traffic jams due to 1 lane road. If the area was brought under PMC atleast some planning would have been done.

Real estate avg cost in these villages should still be 4500 psft or even in some cases more than 6000 psft. High time there is infra planned in these areas.

If these were considered in concensus then I guess population of Pune UA would have been around 6.5 million or so.

In a grand finale to ongoing celebrations to mark 60 years of diplomatic ties between Germany and India, a ten-day Indo-German Urban Mela will be held in Pune from January 11 showcasing pavilions incorporating the best of innovation and design of the two countries.

Conceptualised
by internationally renowned German artist Markus Heinsdorff, the unique travelling exhibition will host interactive presentations by various German corporations and organisations on topics and solutions with a thematic focus on "City Spaces", highlighting issues such as mobility, energy, sustainable urban development, architecture cultural space and urban art.

"This programme series across India broaches the implications of rapid urbanisation and challenges posed by the pace of change in German and Indian cities today," Folico Nather, director, Max Muller Bhavan, the city-based cultural centre of Germany which houses the Goethe-institute, one of the organisers, told PTI.

Elaborating on the project he said, "the year of Germany in India ( 2011-2012)", celebration which kicked off in September 2011 and is scheduled to continue till early 2013, reflected a "united vision in the field of politics, business, science, culture and education, serving as a platform to showcase, reinforce and develop this historical relationship -- marking 60 years of diplomatic ties between two countries."

The Indo-German Urban Mela which began its tour with Mumbai in 2012, followed by Bangalore in June, Chennai in August and New Delhi in October will now conclude in Pune with its final stop-over with the set of pavilions that will be arranged and adapted to local conditions to create a novel temporary festival venue at Deccan College on the outskirts of the city," said Ketaki Golatkar, one of the coordinators of the fixture for which the students learning German are invited to work as volunteers.

The pavilions will feature and explore global innovations future trends and what could make cities more "livable".

Heinsdorff, who has conceptualised the project, said, "The focus of my creations is working with urban spaces. The objective of my design of these pavilions has been to retain the traditional aspects of Indian design and mould them into sustainable architectural solutions. The uniqueness of the approach lies in identifying the architectural element in nature and enhancing it".

The corporate partners of the project include Bajaj Allianz, BASF, Bosch, Deutsche Bank, Siemens and Volkswagen.

PMC plans integrated power plant to meet its electricity needs

After successfully converting solid waste to an energy source, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) now aims at setting up integrated power plant with the target of generating power equal to its consumption for civic facilities.

In his budget speech on Tuesday, Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak said the civic administration was planning to take up integrated power plant, involving solid waste department, sewage treatment department and other departments, to generate power. “We should aim at generating power supply equal to that consumed by the civic body for various purposes and this is a first step towards it,” he said.

The project at Naidu Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is planned on a BOT basis where wet garbage of solid waste department and sludge prepared at STP of sewage treatment department would be used to generate gas and then power.

“The PMC spends Rs 125 crore per annum towards payment of electricity bill. If we are able to generate power in large amount by new methods then the civic administration will be able to reduce the expenditure of electricity bill and even try to manage the power supply of the city,” said Joint Municipal Commissioner Suresh Jagtap.

The PMC started with biogas plant in various parts of city where it processed the wet garbage generated in that area for producing electricity which is being used to light gardens, street lights and ward offices in some places. The PMC has undertaken setting up of biogas plant across the city in large numbers.

The solid waste management department has also successfully generated power from waste. The power generated would soon be connected to grid.

“The PMC consumes around 30 MW power with most of it going for water supply and sewage treatment plant. If we are able to generate power equivalent to that required at water supply plant and sewage plant then it will help the PMC reduce its expenditure on electricity bills,” said Srinivas Kandul, superintending engineer of PMC.

The civic body decided to focus on energy conservation and would take steps to reduce power consumption. As part of its solar city initiative, the PMC would be installing solar system at civic headquarters and hospitals.

NEW DELHI: For those Harley-Davidson fans in India who can't yet afford their dream machine, the iconic bike maker may soon offer a place where they can live their dream.

The US manufacturer is in talks with a company to open the world's second Harley-Davidson Cafe in Pune, said a person with knowledge of the development.

The only existing Harley-Davidson Cafe, on the Las Vegas strip, is hugely popular among Harley enthusiasts the world over.

In Pune, Harley-Davidson is expected to license the cafe to a local builder that is also building a luxury hotel and offices, the person said, adding the iconic motorcycle maker plans to open similar cafes in other cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Chennai, where the popularity of the brand is on the rise.

Anoop Prakash, managing director at Harley-Davidson India, declined comment. "We will not comment on rumours and speculation," he said in response to an email questionnaire.

Besides fast food and beverages, the cafe is expected to sell branded gear, accessories and Harley memorabilia, and will become an alternative source of revenue for the company besides being a marketing tool in a country where Harley expects 25-30% annual growth over the next five years.

It could not be ascertained if the Pune cafe would be similar in size and style to the one in Vegas, which can host up to 1,400 guests at a time, and even has a wedding chapel inside.

A $500,000 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail burst through the front of the cafe, and over 15 custom motorcycles - including those of Elvis Presley and Billy Joel - are on display throughout the cafe. The retail store stocks Harley t-shirts, hats, jackets, bandanas and the likes.

Harley-Davidson attracts a loyal brand community, with licensing of the HD logo accounting for around 5% of the company's net revenue globally.

Since it set up operations in India in 2009, the motorcycle maker has sold over 2,000 bikes through 10 dealerships in cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata. It sells 13 models in the country, priced at Rs 5 lakh onwards.

The company has an assembly plant for completely knocked down kits at Bawal in Haryana, its second such plant after the one in Brazil.

Harley is now targeting smaller cities and towns such as Raipur, Bhubaneswar, Nagpur, Indore, Bhopal, Kochi, Lucknow and Jaipur. It has already opened dealerships in Hyderabad, Chandigarh and Ahmedabad.

Pune, with a huge two-wheeler population and a big pool of rich IT industry executives, is seen as an ideal location for Harley.

PUNE: The general body of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday approved the Rs 4,167.5-crore budget for the 2013-14 fiscal, marking the first time that the civic budget has crossed the Rs 4,000 crore figure.

Standing committee chairman Baburao Chandere had proposed a hike of around Rs 562.48 crore in the budget submitted by the municipal commissioner, Mahesh Pathak.

The revised budget was discussed in the general body meeting on Thursday. The elected members criticized the chairman saying the budget that he had presented concentrated on the Kothrud assembly areas to nurture his political aspirations. "The budget has not done justice to all parties in the house," said Vasant More, leader of opposition, adding, "Additional income sources should be found and funds should be distributed equally to all areas."

"The local body tax is expected to be implemented from the next financial year. There are chances that the income will go down but the chairman increased the budget by over Rs 500 crore," said Arvind Shinde, Congress leader in the PMC.

Deputy mayor Deepak Mankar said, "The budget has failed to find new ways to strengthen PMC schools."

Refuting More's allegations, Chandere said the budget will fulfill needs of all the areas in the city. "Income for the additional Rs 560 crore will be raised from property tax, building permissions and loans," he added.

The budget includes projects such as development of merged villages, programmes under the Kothrud development fund, road construction, rehabilitation of commercial sex workers, welfare of the girl child and supply of drinking water through tankers

Number of garbage containers reduced

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has tasted success with its drive to minimise the number of garbage containers in the city.
In the last four years, the number of such containers has drastically come down from 2,400 to 900. The civic body ultimate aims to make Pune a garbage container free city.
Assistant Municipal Commissioner Suresh Jagtap, who is heading the Solid Waste Management department in PMC said that though the quantum of garbage has doubled in the city over the last four years, the civic body has been able reduce the number of containers in the city.
The reduction in the number of garbage containers, explained Jagtap, is due to various factors such as door-to-door collection of garbage by Swach, garbage segregation and 'ghanta gadis' (bell hand carts) in some areas.
"PMC has removed most of the garbage containers from the main roads of the city and along the BRTS routes," he added.
Jagtap said in 2009-10, the garbage generation in the city was around 700 Metric Tonne (MT) per day but has now gone up to around 1,400 MT per day.
With the help of private participation, mainly Swach and women self help groups, PMC has started door to door garbage collection.
This has helped a great deal in minimising garbage in the city, as the volunteers dispose the solid garbage on their own.
He admitted that although the number of containers has come down, the civic body still needs to lift the existing containers at some spots at least 2-3 times a day.
Earlier, the civic body used to lift the containers only once in 24 hours.
Of late, PMC has introduced the zero garbage ward scheme in 10 wards in the city. Under this scheme, the civic body will be able to minimise some containers in the city.
Jagtap said it will take some more time to make the city completely free of garbage containers as new villages would be merged in the city and PMC would have to put new containers in the villages for collecting garbage.

Civic panel okays 100 protective suits for firemen

The standing committee of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday approved a tender for the purchase of 100 special fire suits worth Rs 1.70 crore for the fire brigade.

"The sophisticated suits will help firemen battle a blaze more effectively. Each suit costs around Rs 1.5 lakh," said Vishal Tambe, chairman of the standing committee, on Monday.

He added that the suits will make firemen better equipped to handle fires involving chemicals and protect themselves from smoke and dust.

The civic body has been taking steps to improve its fire fighting system. It had sought financial aid of Rs 500 crore from the 13th finance commission. The civic body had sent an elaborate plan to the state government in 2011.

As per the plan, one of the priorities for the fire brigade was to increase the number of fire stations, from the existing 10 to at least 25, to cover the municipal area spread over 243 sq km. Each fire station would have to be well-equipped with fire-fighting machinery and adequate staff strength. The fire brigade would also need over 300 breathing apparatus and fire entry suits. As per the plan, the fire brigade has sought 22 ambulances and other vehicles.

In other decisions during Monday's meeting, the standing committee also gave a go-ahead to a housing policy for employees and approved a plan for providing martial arts training for women in the city.

तब्बल 156 वर्षांपासून रात्रंदिन कार्यरत असणारी पुणे महापालिका हद्दीतील जकात नाकी रविवारी मध्यरात्रीपासून बंद झाली. शहरात आजपासून (सोमवार) स्थानिक संस्था कर लागू झाल्याने जकात वसुली थांबविण्यात आली असून, नाक्*यांवरील वाहनांची वर्दळ थंडावली आहे.

शहरात 39 जकात नाकी कार्यरत होती. यामधून दररोज तीन कोटी रुपयांची जकात वसूल होत होती. एलबीटीच्या अंमलबजावणीमुळे ही सर्व नाकी बंद करण्यात आली आहेत. पुणे नगरपालिकेची स्थापना 20 मे 1857 रोजी झाली तेव्हापासून नगरपालिका आणि त्यानंतर महापालिकेतर्फे जकात वसुली करण्यात येत होती. नगरपालिकेच्या काळात सुमारे 25 हजारांवर असणारे जकातीचे उत्पन्न जकात रद्द होईपर्यंतच्या वर्षात (31 मार्च 2013 अखेर) तेराशे कोटींवर गेले होते. जकात रद्द झाल्यानंतर शहरातील प्रमुख नाक्*यांवरील वातावरणाचा आढावा घेतला असता सर्वत्र कमालीची शांतता होती.

एरवी वाहनांची मोठी वर्दळ असलेल्या शिंदेवाडी जकात नाक्*यावर सोमवारी मात्र शुकशुकाट होता. जकात बंद झाल्याने या जकात नाक्*यावर येणाऱ्या सुमारे ऐंशी टक्के वाहनांची संख्या कमी झाल्याचे येथील नाका पर्यवेक्षकांनी "सकाळ'शी बोलताना सांगितले. केवळ एस्कॉर्ट करणाऱ्या वाहनांचीच या ठिकाणी ये-जा सुरू होती. जकात भरण्याच्या खिडक्*यांवरही शुकशुकाट होता.

नाका पर्यवेक्षक अरुण ठाणेकर व रवींद्र थोरात म्हणाले, 'जकात बंद होणार असल्याची माहिती येथे येणाऱ्यांना व्हावी, यासाठी नाक्*यावर ठिकठिकाणी फलक लावण्यात आले आहेत. एलबीटीसंबंधीची माहिती पुस्तकेही वाटण्यात आली आहेत.''

सध्या नाक्*यावर फक्त एस्कॉर्ट करणारी वाहनेच येत आहेत. त्यामुळे जकात नाक्*यावरील सुमारे 80 टक्के वाहनांची संख्या कमी झाली आहे. या ठिकाणी जकात भरण्यासाठी दोन खिडक्*या होत्या. त्या बंद करण्यात आल्या आहेत. तसेच कर्मचाऱ्यांची संख्याही कमी करण्यात आली असून काही कर्मचारी एलबीटीच्या कामासाठी पाठविण्यात आले असल्याचेही त्यांनी सांगितले.

जकात बंद झाल्याबद्दल चालकांनी मात्र समाधान व्यक्त केले. जकात भरण्यासाठी आम्हाला अनेक वेळा तासन्*तास रांगेत उभे राहावे लागत होते. त्यातच वेळ वाया जात होता. आता हा त्रास बंद होईल. वेळ वाचल्याने माल घेऊन संबंधित ठिकाणी वेळेवर पोचता येणार असल्याची प्रतिक्रिया सोपान गोगावले, विलास काळे आणि दीपक डुमे या चालकांनी व्यक्त केली.

औंध नाक्*यावरही शांतता
मध्यरात्रीपासून औंध, बाणेर परिसरातील जकात नाक्*यांवर शुकशुकाट होता. नेहमी वाहनांची गर्दी आणि कर भरण्यासाठी लागलेल्या रांगा असे चित्र असणाऱ्या जकात नाक्*यांचा परिसर रिकामा झाला होता. नाक्*यांवर वाहनांची गर्दी नव्हती. शहराबाहेर जाणाऱ्या वाहनांकडून कर घेणारी यंत्रणा फक्त कार्यरत होती. अन्य कामे बंद झाल्याने इतर कामगार नव्हते. वर्दळ थंडावल्याने टोलनाक्*यावर असलेले चहाचे स्टॉल, अन्य दुकाने बंद होती. अनेक वाहनचालक नेहमीप्रमाणेच कर भरण्यासाठी येत होते. त्यांना क्षेत्रीय कार्यालयात एलबीटी स्वीकारण्यात येणार असल्याचे सांगण्यात येत होते.

साहेब जाऊ का...?
एलबीटीची माहिती नसल्याने खराडी नाक्*यावर काही वाहनचालक सवयीप्रमाणे थांबून जकातीबाबत चौकशी करीत होते. चौकशी झाल्यावर साहेब जाऊ का, अशी विचारणा करून वाहने शहरात जात होती. मध्यरात्रीपासून दुपारी एक वाजेपर्यंत तेरा तासांत दोनशे चार वाहनांनी रहदारी कर भरला. खराडीतील जकात नाक्*यावर तीन पाळ्यांमध्ये पालिकेचे 33 कर्मचारी काम करीत होते. एलबीटी लागू झाल्याने येथे फक्त तीन कर्मचाऱ्यांची नियुक्ती करण्यात आल्याची माहिती पर्यवेक्षक सुनील तापकीर यांनी दिली.

LONDON: Pune has witnessed the biggest boom in multi-millionaire population across India in the last five years - a whopping 68% rise.

Neighbours Mumbai saw the second highest growth in the country's super rich population - at 59% between 2007-11 while India's capital Delhi followed with more than a 50% increase in those with net assets of over $30 million.

Bangalore saw a 46% increase in those referred to as multi-millionaires, Hyderabad 43%, Chennai 25%, Ahmedabad 18% and Kolkata 12%.

Overall, India saw a 46% increase in super rich population between 2007-11.

However when it comes to actual number of multi millionaires Mumbai boasts of the lion's share across India.

Over 1 in 3 (36.6%) of multi millionaires in India - 577 live in Mumbai followed way behind by Delhi (147), Kolkata 126, Hyderabad (114), Bangalore (97).

Chennai is ranked 6th highest with a multi millionaire population of 88 followed by Pune (55) and Ahmedabad (51).

According to WealthInsight research, there were 1,576 multi-millionaires in India at the end of 2011.

The research has highlighted some major trends - the number of multi-millionaires in India increased by 46% over the four year period between 2007 and 2011.

Mumbai's multi-millionaire numbers increased substantially (59%) as the city benefited from its status as India's financial center and leading import-export and commercial hub.

The number of multi-millionaires in Pune, Maharashtra's second city after Mumbai, grew by the largest margin over the review period (68%), aided by both its proximity to Mumbai and also by robust growth in the local automotive, manufacturing and technology sectors.

The number of multi-millionaires in Bangalore and Hyderabad were boosted by strong growth in their services sectors, which make up the bulk of multi-millionaire wealth in these two cities.

India is also home to some of the fastest growing cities for ultra-High Net Worth Individuals.

"High net worth individuals" otherwise known as "millionaires" or "HNWIs" refer to individuals with net assets of US$1 million or more excluding primary residences

"Ultra high net worth individuals" or "UHNWIs" are individuals with net assets of US$30 million or more excluding their primary residences.

In the period to 2016, 30% of the fastest UHNWIs growth centers will be India, including four of the top five (Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Mumbai).

Brazil made up two of the fastest growing cities over the review period (Belo Horizonte and Fortazela).

India currently has the third-highest number of HNWIs in the Asia-Pacific region after China and Australia.

In 2011, there are 251,000 HNWIs in India who, together, hold a total of $1,083 billion.

Mumbai is home to almost 40% of HNWIs.

WealthInsight research said "But the number of Ultra HNWIs in Pune, grew by the largest margin over the review period and received our highest Rating of Private Banking Potential. The rating is backed up by strong recent growth and a relatively low penetration of private banks when compared to the likes of Mumbai."

As of 2011, there are approximately 1.9 million high net worth individuals (HNWIs) in the BRICS, with a combined wealth of $7.5 trillion. This equates to 11.3% of total worldwide HNWI volumes (16.8 million) and 11.4% of total worldwide HNWI wealth (US$66 trillion).

The total number of HNWIs in the BRICS increased by 30% over the review period, from 1.5 million in 2007 to 1.9 million in 2011.

Over the forecast period the total number of HNWIs in the BRICS is projected to grow by 76%, to reach 3.4 million by 2016.

Chinese cities will dominate overall, but the fastest growing places for Ultra-HNWIs will be in India.

Despite a slowdown in the global economy and fears over a hard-landing, China has continued to grow strongly: at the end of 2011 66% of HNWIs in the BRICS countries were based in China.

According to WealthInsight, the London based global wealth consultancy, the total number of high net worth individuals (HNWIs) in the BRICS countries has increased by 30% over the past 4 years.

In 2007 there were 1.5 million HNWIs in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa; as of 2011 there are 1.9 million wealthy individuals in these countries combined.

By 2016 this figure is projected to almost double to reach 3.5 million HNWIs.

The number of HNWIs in China has also increased at the quickest rate over the review period, rising by 41% between 2007 and 2011. In India, HNWI volumes increased by 32%; in Brazil, 31%; and 18% in South Africa. During this time, Russia was the only country in the group to experience a decline in the total number of HNWIs (-18%), largely due to a fall in the value of the Russian ruble which negatively impacted on the US dollar wealth of Russian HNWIs.

Over the forecast period (2011-2016) the overall volume of HNWIs in the BRICS is projected to increase by 76%. But the story is not just about China.

India will see the strongest growth in the years ahead with the number of HNWIs in the country more than doubling by 2016 (103%).
