Iraq holds talks with German companies on modernising traffic systems

2012-12-04

The Iraqi government on Tuesday (December 4th) said that official Iraqi-German talks are under way to negotiate a long-term partnership agreement through which Germany would help develop Iraq's transportation and traffic sectors.

"An Iraqi technical delegation representing a number of ministries began intensive talks in Germany with the Safarkovski group of companies to sign a contract to develop external and internal roads in the capital Baghdad and other provinces across the country," said Salam al-Quraishi, economic advisor to the Iraqi government.

Projects could include "building a unified electronic system, linking [that system] with modern traffic signs that can be remotely controlled and modernising traffic systems to keep up with the current systems used in the world, given that the current traffic system in Iraq is outdated", he said.

The two countries are also discussing building a factory to make traffic lights, signage and special paints for streets and internal and external roads, he said.

"Talks are positive, as these companies have initially agreed to help Iraq," al-Quraishi said. "We are currently discussing the required details to sign the agreement."

They are planning to restore all 100+ routes they used to have. The main problem is the traffic and all the check points. Theres a lot of problems they need to sort out.

Check points are actually not a problem, the bus takes precedence over the cars.
