Very true!!!! Parking is a nightmare there but in the evenings after 8 it is lil more relaxed. Which means head to the place for dinner. I think the proposed multi-level parking may reduce the stress of parking there.

New boutique spirit firms outdo peers

Sushma U N, TNN | Dec 19, 2012, 03.14AM IST
Quote:
After a wave of brewpubs and microbreweries, boutique spirit firms are uncorking across the country. Over the last few years, little known boutique spirit firms have mushroomed across the country in line with the trend in the US and Europe, and are growing faster than the big boys, driven by innovative products and unique tastes.

Boutique spirit firms are essentially ones that make spirits in a much smaller scale in micro-distilleries. "It is a sort of a bonsai version- you round off the spillage from a conventional distillery and that is our entire production," says the founder of Agave Spirits, Desmond Nazareth. Nazareth's firm is among the few to own a micro distillery and manufactures margarita blends, agave spirits and orange liqueurs.

The boutique spirits industry was born in India about five years ago when companies found that there were several holes left unplugged in the premium spirits business and decided to play in categories like flavoured Vodka, Indian versions of Tequila or scented brandy, that were too small for large companies to bother about.

"Large multinationals brought in premiumness into India, and led to the creation of newer categories of spirits, but their sheer size wouldn't let them bring out products in these niche categories, opening up huge opportunities for boutique firms," says the director of chennai-based boutique vodka firm Sipping Spirits, Prasanna Natarajan.

A maturing Indian market, changes in lifestyle, and desire for newer tastes and refined needs of Indians has led to the discovery of newer products. Sipping Spirits, for instance, has come out with tender coconut flavoured vodka and coffee flavoured vodka. "We are increasingly seeing such products in hotels and bars and people prefer such products. Liqueurs and spirits other than the regular citrus flavoured vodka are getting popular and we are seeing new brands bringing such products," said chief executive officer, Sumedh Singh Mandla, Aspri Spirits, a distributor of branded spirits.

Tastes apart, companies are also looking at a different target audience. While women have gained a larger mindshare for companies, companies are also going upcountry with their products to increase exposure to premium liquor. While Goa is currently India's micro-distillery capital, boutique firms have their presence in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Pondicherry.

"US has tapped out, Europe only has small growth areas, and with increasing income levels and more exposure, the Asian and Indian market is opening up," Agave's Nazareth said. As a person who was among the first to set up a micro distillery in India, Nazareth says he gets several calls asking for advice everyday from entrepreneurs looking to enter the business. "Every large international spirits conglomerate too is looking at increasing base in India and are making localized products," he says.

The good thing about this business is that once you get into a new category and establish yourself, you're safe because others wouldn't tap into that but look at other categories since there are numerous categories that large firms don't play in and are left open for smaller companies, says Natarajan.

Yet, despite attractive business opportunities, policy issues seem to be standing in the way of the industry's growth. Regulations, for instance, are the same for all distilleries irrespective of the quantity of liquor manufactured. "We need to work the way any large distillery does though it doesn't make business sense," Nazareth pointed out.

Rookie Firm No 1 In TN's Vodka Mkt

CHENNAI: Little-known spirits firm Sipping Spirits has emerged as the largest seller of premium Vodka in Tamil Nadu, with sales of its Resolute Pink Vodka seeing a 24% jump from 4,428 crates in November this year compared with 3,548 crates the previous month, driving up overall sales of premium Vodka. The non-descript start-up manufactures niche varieties of colored and flavoured Vodka. The firm's presence in a niche segment and innovation has edged out larger players like Bacardi and Radico Khaitan from the top slot. "The company's focus on upcountry markets helped increasing sales, along with the shift of contract manufacturing from Southern Agri Furane Industries to Mohan Breweries and Distilleries," said director, Prasanna Natarajan, Sipping Spirits.

This has been happening from December, 2012.

Police checking almost every vehicle plying past midnight at almost all important roads, junctions, near Ministers houses etc.

2 wheeler guys are more prone to harassment.

My face has become very familiar to most of the police as I cross them almost every day past midnight.

They ask you to put on the lights inside the car and check the boot, back seats etc.

They even note down the vehicle no.

On 25th Jan night, even videos were taken at Luz & Adyar Bridge.

Police checking has become very intensive during nights. They even had mock terrorists (selected police personnel as Terrorists) targeting Chennai and the rest of the police identifying & catching them.
