The ‘Titanic’ to be reborn as ‘Titanic-II’

The global launch of Titanic II scheduled for December 4, 2012, on the retired aircraft carrier USS Intrepid in New York will be rescheduled for early 2013 as a mark of respect to the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Blue Star Line Chairman Professor Clive Palmer said Hurricane Sandy caused serious damage to New York and loss of life.

He said he would reschedule the launch to late February, 2013, while other Titanic II events due to be held in London and Southampton in England, Boston in the United States, Nova Scotia in Canada and in Macau have also been postponed until that time.

“Mayor Michael Bloomberg cancelled the city’s world renowned New York Marathon last weekend as he didn’t want a cloud to hang over the event in the wake of the hurricane and the damage it inflicted,” Professor Palmer said.

“New York had a close relationship with the original RMS Titanic and the shipping company White Star Line and we believe it is too early to be holding our launch while the city and the region continues its recovery.”

Dates for the rescheduled Titanic II events will be released in the next few weeks.

This guy is nuts, the manager of Jinling Shipyard have said that they only have a MOU, nothing concrete about this project. Beside that shipyard is chosen solely because they've built some other ships for Palmer before. Yes they've built many RORO car carriers and the special A380 wing transport for Airbus so they are technically competent, but they have no passenger ship experience. If Palmer is serious about this project he should have gone to Huanghai Shipyard or better GSI, which actually have exported ferries to Europe.

I wish he had chosen my home town to build the TITANIC II, Saint-Nazaire is famous for having built some of the world's most iconic cruise ships...*

Would have been great for me as the new FRANCE ship is already due to start next year HERE, watching its construction along with that of the TITANIC II in St Nazaire would have been so exciting to me...I guess Palmer mainly chose China for its very cheap labor.

Shipping company Blue Star Line has announced a new date next year for the London Titanic II event and has also rescheduled five other Titanic II events around the world.

In April, 2012, Professor Clive Palmer, a leading Australian businessman and owner of Blue Star Line, declared to the world his intention to build Titanic II, a full-scale recreation of the world’s most famous cruise liner.

The six Titanic II events were originally scheduled to take place in December, 2012. However, following the devastation caused in New York and along the east coast of the United States by Hurricane Sandy the decision was made to postpone all events until 2013.

Professor Palmer said the London gala dinner will be held at the Natural History Museum on Saturday, March 2, 2013.

The global launch of Titanic II will take place on February 26 in New York while other events will be held on February 16 in Macau, February 25 in Boston, March 1 in Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada as well as the events in England in London and Southampton on March 5.

Professor Palmer said although the RMS Titanic on her maiden voyage in April, 1912, never docked in London, the English capital remains central to the Titanic story.

“It was in London where the plans for Titanic were first drawn up when White Star Line’s Managing.


Director, Joseph Bruce Ismay, attended a dinner at Lord Pirrie’s Belgrave Square home in 1907.

“Lord Pirrie was chairman of Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast where Titanic was built and he shared Ismay’s vision of building the largest and most luxurious passenger liners in the world.

“White Star Line’s headquarters in Cockspur Street near Trafalgar Square was once a plush booking office for Titanic, but post-disaster it was besieged by concerned relatives desperate for news of their loved ones.

“While looking ahead to the exciting Titanic II project we shall commemorate the past by paying tribute to the courage of the passengers, crew and artisans who contributed so much to the ship of dreams.”

Titanic II is scheduled to set sail from Southampton to New York on her maiden passenger voyage in 2016.

In April, 2012, Blue Star Line signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese company CSC Jinling to build Titanic II, while plans for the ship have been commenced by Finnish-based marine design and engineering company Deltamarin.

That's a bit impossible, really ...

To be honest, i would prefer it if instead of a seafaring ship they were to build it as a stationary hotel & museum and therefore it could be a 100% replica. That way, it would look more like the original.

Not really. With todays technology you could do it.

It's literally all rust, no machines can fix that. Also it would break apart if anybody tried to recover it.

But damn, that's cool news! Although this reminds me too much of trying to rebuild the twin towers... Why bring a ship back from the dead when it had one of the most famous diasters?

I remember a quote of a famous oceanographer a few years back ( Maybe Ballard i don't remember exactly who ). "It would be easier to lower the Atlantic than to raise the Titanic". It can't be done.

In theory I do share your opinion, but in practice that's f______ impossible. The cost of such a project would be mad...but above all, after resting over a century on the sea bed at 4000m deep, the Titanic's wreck (split in 2) is awfully weakened & trying to lift the wreck would make it crumble. I watched a documentary about it & the scientists said that the rust-eating bacterias which are attacking the metal day by day will have turned the Titanic's remains into dust within 15 to 20 years...fascinating but sad too...

A Chinese shipyard has formed a panel and upgraded its facilities to prepare for the construction of a replica of the Titanic for an Australian billionaire.

According to the State-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard Co Ltd in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, it will take three years to build the luxury liner.

The shipyard signed an agreement to build the liner in April with the Australian mining billionaire Clive Palmer.

"The world's leading shipyards and ship design companies, including Finland's Deltamarin, have been invited to join the construction work of Titanic II," said Li Wenbao, spokesman for Jinling Shipyard.

"The liner will be equipped with advanced technologies, including the latest life-saving and communications systems, to meet the requirements of modern navigation," Li said.

He added that the formal construction contract has not yet been signed between the shipyard and Blue Star Line, a wholly owned subsidiary of Palmer's mineralogy company.

The 270-meter-long and 53-meter-high liner will have nine floors and 840 rooms, and be equipped with deluxe cabins, gymnasiums, swimming pools and libraries.

The shipyard said about 900 crew members and 2,400 passengers will get to travel on the liner's maiden voyage, scheduled for 2016, from England to North America, in accordance with Titanic's planned route.

Yang Luxing, a 29-year-old Nanjing resident, said the construction of the liner provides a chance to fulfill her long-cherished dream and that she does not mind how luxurious the liner will be, or how expensive the ticket.

"The important thing is that Titanic suggests a beautiful love story for me, because I watched the movie when I was a teenager," Yang said. "Its voyage, especially the first one, means more than other ships' maiden voyages for many people including me."

The story of Titanic has been well-known in China since 1997, when the James Cameron movie was shown across the country.

On April 15, 1912, Titanic sank off Newfoundland after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The accident claimed the lives of 1,523 people.

The Blue Star Line held a news conference in Hong Kong on Saturday introducing the construction work of Titanic II and related promotional activities.

"It's difficult to replicate a luxury liner, but Jinling Shipyard has a history of 60 years of building various kinds of vessels with high quality," Ge Biao, director of the shipyard, was quoted by Xinhua News Agency as saying in Hong Kong.

"The shipyard has full confidence it can build Titanic II in cooperation with foreign partners," Ge said.

Jinling Shipyard, founded in 1952, is a major shipbuilder with about 3,000 employees and makes vessels for many countries.

Li added that promotional activities will be held in other cities, such as Macao and London.

I have a feeling that construction will commence sometime around April, or around then. Basically exactly 1 year after the 1st announcement. It all fits in. If it does make its maiden voyage as the company claims in 2016, and the ship is laid down this year, then it means that the construction will take a unusually long time to complete. Queen Mary 2 for example was completed in about 1 and a half years. I assume that this is due to the very luxurious interiors .. i can't think of any other reason.

The Titanic II's construction is said to take 3 years, that's quite long for such a "small" liner nowadays (compared to the modern ones), but like you said, that must be owing to the will from Palmer to make the ship's interior look like that of the original vessel, gonna be a fastidious & challenging task I guess. Let's also bear in mind that it will be made in China, that's probably worth taking one's time...

My native city is Saint-Nazaire, & the QM2 was built there...I remember seeing it under construction several times a week, I even attended its departure, it was impressive. Can't wait for my native city to start the construction of the world's biggest cruise liner, it will be taking place in the next few weeks...

I have seen the QM2 from a rather close distance when it was docked in the port of Piraeus during the Athens Olympics of 2004. It was a marvelous sight, bigger and more beautiful than any ship i have ever seen. It dwarfed any other ship around it in the port

That new cruise ship will be bigger than the already huge Oasis class ? Wow.. those ships barely fit into the definition of "ship" - they better fit under the definition "floating cities" haha

It will actually be the 3rd Oasis-class ship (its name hasn't been released yet), the construction will start next september & will take 3 years as well. There's also another good news:

The Royal Caribbean says that it may have a second order for a similar ship in the near future for France.

Titanic II interior plans revealed

An Australian multi-millionaire has unveiled blueprints for the Titanic II, a modern replica of the world’s most famous ocean liner, which he plans to build and sail across the Atlantic just like its namesake attempted to.

The Titanic II is scheduled to make its first voyage, naturally from Southampton to New York, in late 2016. “We will complete the journey. We will sail into New York on the ship they designed,” Clive Palmer, the mining entrepreneur behind the project said.

The ship bears an uncanny resemblance to the original. Side by side images presented by Mr Palmer’s company Blue Star Line – a play on the original ship’s operator White Star Line –show that it has been designed to near identical specifications with the only upgrades being air conditioning, a hospital and a helipad.

Mr Palmer suggested that there would be no television or internet. And he said that passengers will find early 20th century-style clothing in their room should they wish to dress up and pretend they are aboard the original ship.

Just like in 1912, there will be three passenger classes who will not be allowed to mingle. Even the gym and the swimming pool are near identical to those on the 1912 ship, despite much more modern alternatives being available.

One crucial upgrade is the number of lifeboats. The original Titanic, carrying 2,224 passengers and crew, was sunk after hitting an iceberg during its maiden voyage on April 15 1912.
