East Coast chalets in race to woo business travellers

15 Jan 07

THE humble chalets at East Coast beach have joined the race to woo business travellers under a new operator.

Goldkist International, which also owns Sim Lim Square, will put in $5 milion to renovate the 197 chalets previously managed by Coasta Sands Resort.

Wifi access and a business centre are among the new facilities being planned.

The chalets will remain open despite the renovations, which will completed around July.

More details......

A 5-million-dollar makeover for chalets at East Coast

The chalets at East Coast are set for a 5-million dollar makeover.

This, after Singapore-based company Goldkist International won the bid to run the East Coast Resort with effect from March.

In awarding the tender, the Singapore Land Authority said Goldkist submitted the highest bid of more than 324,000 dollars.

Goldkist, whose tenancy is for an initial three years and renewable up to 2015, intends to keep the area as a chalet resort.

But it has big plans to transform it into a cosy family location for locals and a world class conference and convention centre for tourists.

Among the plans for the makeover are the development of spa and sports facilities, walking trails and even the creation of an English cottage feel.

With the revamp, the East Coast resort will be renamed "Island Park Resort".

I like the idea of developing walking trails....but creating an English Cottage feel by the tropical beach?!

btw there are some areas in Singapore that really have that English Cottage feel, with the authentic black-and-white cottages nestled in deep greenery

Taken from Changi Beach. You can see the city and a plane landing at Changi in the distance.

Some news on development in East Coast.

Plot at East Coast park to be redeveloped into recreational hub: NParks
By Kwok Wai/Monica Kotwani | Posted: 05 December 2012 2146 hrs

SINGAPORE: Construction has begun on the plot of land opposite Parkway Parade, which will be redeveloped into a commercial and recreational hub.

The space, once occupied by a golf driving range, is located at East Coast Park.

National Parks (NParks) told MediaCorp on Wednesday that the development is expected to be ready by early 2014, and that the space will consist of over 10 F&B and retail outlets housed within two single-storey buildings.

MediaCorp understands that there will also be a recreational lawn for outdoor activities.

NParks added that the concept and design plans for Marine Cove along East Coast Park are being finalised.

Some blocks of the once-popular recreational area have already been torn down, leaving only the main building and a former bowling alley.

Director of property firm Chris International Chris Koh said the two building that remain could become another lifestyle hub option.

"You can have the entire East Coast with several lifestyle hubs. So rather than just an area for food, I would want to have some food... and some play, and some shopping. So I will have a good mix in that area," he added.

Hopefully Nparks will finally make a wide and proper connection from Parkway Parade to the new recreational hub to provide convenient access for people from all walks of life, and from all regions in Singapore.
