Town Hall meeting tomorrow on the issue, with supposedly a stadium project unveiling.

As long as they do not give the franchise to the Cosmos, I would gladly support them.
Oh please oh please let them be named Gotham FC and have Christian Bale dressed up as Batman for a mascot

The question is can the politicans withstand the torrent of money that will get into their coffers and look at the bigger picture and try and negotiate a way for the soccer stadium to be built in a different area and protect that open green space that tens of thousands of people use all the time, versus a soccerm stadium, which will be used off and on.

They should try and move that stadium to another parcel......the parking lot as I said in a earlier post. :outofstateshrug:

N.Y. Cosmos propose Queens soccer stadium, as part of $400M complex

The New York Cosmos have revealed plans to develop a $400 million mixed-use complex, including restaurants, retail space, a hotel and a soccer stadium on two sites near Belmont Park, which could rival previously announced plans to bring a Major League Soccer stadium in Queens, according to the Wall Street Journal.



The Cosmos, which achieved prominence in the 1970s with Brazilian star Pelé, want to bring a privately financed 25,000-seat stadium to state-owned land near the Belmont Park horse-racing track. In September, the state issued a call for developers for the two Nassau County sites, totaling 36 acres.

And the Cosmos’ plan has already seen some political support. ”The idea of the stadium with the retail component and the hotel is exciting,” State Senator Jack Martins, a Nassau County Republican, said. “It certainly has a much greater upside [than solely retail] with the benefit to the county and state in terms of economic development and tax revenue.”

But the plan could upend a controversial proposal for another Major League Soccer stadium at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, as some doubt whether Queens could support multiple professional soccer teams.

But so far both developers appear undeterred. “This city is big enough to deal with three soccer teams. In London, they’ve got seven or eight,” Seamus O’Brien, chairman and CEO of the New York Cosmos said. “I say bring it on.”

Red Bull statdium is still very far. I am an avid futbol fan and I have only been to two Red Bull games, and both were friendlies against big franchises.

Its just way too far to go for a crappy league like the MLS.

If the Flushing stadium goes through, I get the impression whatever team MLS installs there will outdraw the Red Bulls and Cosmos... combined. There's a reason they call the 7 train the International Express, and all of those nations will be less than 15 minutes away.

How do you expect the MLS to grow if people such as yourself don't attend games due to this attitude? If more people didn't have this snobby attitude towards the league, the quality of players would improve due to increased revenues. I don't buy that the stadium is too far, it is right in the middle of Urban Jersey and directly on transit to Manhattan, Newark and Jersey City. The stadium also looks like a soccer stadium you'd find in Europe. So why all the complaining?

That's just how it is. Look at how moving from Jersey to Brooklyn worked for the Nets. They went from a bottom of the barrel team to an elite team (revenue wise) that sells out almost every game. Queens is a much much better location for the stadium.

Flushing Meadows soccer stadium gets union OK

Three crucial unions have announced their support for a proposed Major League Soccer stadium in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, DNAinfo reported. The MLS estimated that the stadium could create up to 2,300 construction jobs, as well as 160 full-time jobs and 750 part-time jobs.

The Hotel Trades Council, the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York and the service employees union, 32BJ SEIU, cited the job creation as the reason for their support.


“We are thrilled to have the support of unions who represent hundreds of thousands of working men and women,” MLS spokeswoman Risa Heller told DNAinfo. “They understand, as we do, what an important economic engine this stadium will be.”

The unions also argued that restaurants, bars and retail stores would see more business because of the stadium.

This is a huge help politically. Who's going to say no with a bunch of union hardhats standing in the room?

Sorry to be a dissenter, but it's not THAT they're building a soccer stadium, but WHERE they're building it. The site is one of the few remnants left from the New York World's Fair, and it was/is called The Pool of Industry. It was and is beautiful. A more logical place to put it would be where they tore down the Aquacade a few years ago, across the bridge from the old New York State Pavilion.
