San Antonio is a prime example of why you don't approach it the way Vegas is right now.

When San Antonio built the 65,000 seat Alamodome in 1993, the idea was to provide a basketball venue for the San Antonio Spurs (NBA), to lure a NFL team, and to host conventions.

It failed miserably in it's goals.

A mere 7 years after it was built, the Spurs broke ground on a basketball-specific facility (that would cost more than the Alamodome had cost) because the Alamodome provided poor sightlines for basketball and the stadium was simply too "cavernous" for that sport.

By the time San Antonio was seriously being considered for an NFL franchise the Alamodome was out of date and either a new stadium would have to be built or an extensive top to bottom renovation would have to be done that would be extremely costly.

And on the convention center side? Fifteen years after the Alamodome was complete, the San Antonio Convention Center (which is less than half a mile from the stadium site) was expanded to 1.3 million square feet.

So, to recap the original design purposes for the Alamodome:

1. As a NBA stadium- failed
2. As a NFL stadium- failed
3. As a convention center- failed

It does host collegiate football games, concerts, and the like so it hasn't been a total loss but it's failed to meet all of it's original goals.

Likewise, Las Vegas is looking to this proposal to provide a space for an NBA franchise, an NFL stadium, UNLV's stadium, concerts, etc.

It may be an cool project but history says that it will fail in becoming an NBA or NFL stadium and it will be used less for conventions because that's not what it was designed to do. I'm sure it will host a slew of concerts, wrestling, boxing, etc. And it will also host UNLV football and perhaps some basketball games.

But you don't need a $2B facility to host a bunch of concerts, boxing matches, and UNLV football games. You could build several great facilities for much less that would accomplish those goals and provide a better experience.
No, just no. Vegas vs San Antonio. And no one ever needs to do anything.

Regents approve UNLV master plan, which includes stadium project

Nevada's higher education leaders unanimously approved UNLV's master plan, which includes the stadium project, on Friday.

With the Nevada System of Higher Education's approval of a campus master plan, UNLV and its private partner Majestic Realty Co. can now move forward with the details of a proposal to build a covered, 60,000-seat stadium on its Maryland Parkway campus.

I have not heard any mention of this, but a mid-level college team with marginal attendance building a 60,000 seat high end stadium seems odd, unless they are planning to make a push to join the Pac 12. Considering the current trend of adding schools because of the size of the market they are in, it seems like they would have a shot.

I know that since it's in Las Vegas, that some other big events will probably be held here, but if it is on campus, can they even sell alcohol?

Yes, they do. Watching Minnesota @ UNLV, fans had it in the stands during camera shots.

There's only a few schools in the country, but Minnesota sells alcohol at football games (on campus stadium now), albeit you must stay in a roped off beer garden/tent area, or otherwise be in a suite.

So I guess that's what the 'innovative' tarping for a potential MLS club would look like....

Now, as to funding this baby...

UNLV plans to ask LVCVA, casinos for $125 million for stadium

UNLV will ask the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority and Las Vegas' biggest casinos for about $125 million to help pay for a new domed football stadium on campus, Don Snyder, UNLV's pointman for the project, said Thursday.

In an interview at his campus office, Snyder said the request is appropriate because the casinos and tourism businesses will be the "biggest economic beneficiaries" of the 60,000-seat venue that UNLV is calling the "megaevent center." It's part of an overall campus redevelopment project that includes a student village with housing and retail that has been dubbed, "UNLV Now."

It'll certainly be longer. Not sure what the height of the video screen in Vegas is yet, though. This shows you the one at Cowboys Stadium:

And this gives you an idea of how the Cowboys Stadium one would look if you made it as long as the one they want in Vegas:

Oh, Vegas' video screen won't be the longest in the world, as that title will stay with the 118-yard-long screen at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai.

Hard to get excited about a new stadium proposal for Vegas. How many proposals have been cancelled to date, about ten ?

In Vegas parlance the odds of UNLV making the PAC12 are about 1/500 in our lifetime. Each new addition would need to justify the (avg) $22-24M+ increase in revenues to ensure no impact on payouts to existing members. The financial model drafted for the PAC12 media contracts place less emphasis on local subscriber rates and already fields a presence in Nevada. Put simply, as of today about the only programs that would add enough new revenue to justify the additions would be Texas, Oklahoma or ND.

This is overwhelmingly a play for landing more special events in Vegas. PAC12 championships, higher profile bowl games or season opening specials, NCAA finals, NBA all-star games, etc. Yes, I'm sure they hope to see the Rebels enhance their program, too, and maybe someday the University will be worth PAC consideration, but for now I think UNLV football is but a small piece of the puzzle. You don't build this type and scale of venue for just 6 games per year that may not even sell out.

Video screens in new stadia in the states are just stupid.

I mean 100 yards ffs, it just says it all. Add some padded seats with arms and itd be just like watching at home.

I do't see the point, you go and watch sports to see it live, not to see it on the screen. I bet 99% of people at the top of Cowboys stadium watch the big screen and not the game below, which completely defeats the point. Also, surely they wouldnt need an even bigger screen, isnt the cowboys one big enough already for eveeryone to see??? Its all about the records.

It's easy to say that when you've never been there. Spectators DO pay attention to what's on the field. The screen just makes it easier for those up top to see what's going on.

Now, let's not start criticizing other countries stadiums....
