I feel like it's only a mater of time before they expand the other sideline stands too, eh? 54K seems a little small for a program of their size

They don't want to overbuild and lose the quality of the atmosphere, plus they routinely avg 59k+ anyway. Right now Autzen is a prime environment and tickets are at a premium, so they've said any expansion will only come when they're certain it will be a worthwhile investment, always sold out and still in keeping with the character of the existing structure.
VT is at the same juncture, despite regular suggestions 66k is too small for them.

The south side expansion in 2002 added about 14,000 seats, so if we assume an actual current capacity of about 58,000, and a similar sized expansion in your pic, the new size would be around 72,000. But it would be listed as 66,000 to keep the string of sellouts going.

You need to take into account the fact that Oregon has a very low population density. Eugene has a metro area population of about 350,000, and outside of that you have nothing until you reach Corvallis-Albany.

Oregon's student body may be large, but their town isn't. Also, it's the Pacific Northwest, not the South, not the Midwest, and not Texas. College Football isn't as high on the priority list as some these other places. |

Autzen Stadium Expansion
Here's my take on a potential expansion of Autzen Stadium. Designed with Google SketchUp!

No offense, but that would pretty thoroughly ruin everything unique and attractive about it in a manner that is well beyond the capacity the Ducks will need anytime soon.

I think it's a cool concept, but it is way too big for what Oregon needs. That looks like it would take it to 75K or so...
