How did it go? I would have watched, except I don't get that channel here in CR. Were you on it? Was Johnny Brenda's featured? Anyone record it and post it to youtube?

The show was really good. Bourdain did a great job with Philly--none of the touristy 'cheesesteak' stuff. Showed how diverse and sophisticated the city actually is, especially the exploding Asian food and culture scene.

Yep, we made it on the show--albeit briefly. They mostly showed the upstairs music venue (where I work) and a couple of our seriously beautiful bartenders made an appearance.

Shockingly, I did not!

Not sure what's out there video-wise, but I'll check.

Cool Spell. I didn't see it cause I just read about it now, but that is cool. I will check if they are going to replay it sometime.

I figured you guys might appreciate this bit of strangeness from today:

So I've been new car shopping lately (an agonizingly annoying process that I can't wait to end) and today I was in a Mazda dealership out on the New Jersey burbs.

Salesman was a nice enough young guy and we got to talking and it turns out he, too, is a South Florida transplant (grew up in Aventura). So that's cool and all but hardly Earth shattering since I run into fellow 'homies' all the time.

But here's the thing--out of nowhere (and completely unprompted from me) he starts talking about how bizarre Opa-Locka is...how he doesn't even know how to describe it to outsiders...how he has taken perplexed visitors there in the past.

Of all the things I expected to be doing today, discussing Opa-Locka in a suburban New Jersey auto dealership would probably have not been on that list. But obviously I was delighted!

Too bad they couldn't match my price, though. A bizarre Opa-Locka connection still isn't enough to make me a pushover.

Haha that's funny. I guess Opa-Locka really is famous!

This isn't really relevant to anything we're discussing here but has anybody seen what used to be called "winter" in the past two years?

This is two years in a row here in the Northeast where the trees are budding in mid-January and people are walking around in windbreakers and t-shirts. I just walked home from meeting friends and realized my neighbor was outside watering her roses.

Snow? What does that look like? Been almost two years since any stuck to the ground here for more than an hour.

And I know it's way warmer than normal down there, too. Routinely topping out over 80 and barely even getting below 70 at night. Those are NOT 'normal' mid-winter temps, even in South Florida.

I dunno. Just find it all kind of weird and a bit disconcerting, I guess. I may have to move to Finland at this rate.

Saw on the news this morning that we are near the record for most consecutive days over 80 degrees in January (we are at 13 straight now)

According to the Weather Channel, today's projected high is 79 degrees. It was 79 degrees at 9:58 this morning. I've been walking around in shorts and sandals practically everyday.

A co-worker told me there was a bee in her car this morning. It's mid-January in the Northeast. There are not supposed to be bees flying around. And we're not supposed to think some extraordinarily odd things aren't happening with the weather?? Please.

On a related note, it's funny how some people are seemingly unaware of any of this. My uncle who lives in Pembroke Pines called the other day and asked how I was doing with the "cold and snow." I told him when I landed in the Yukon I'd let him know. Sure as hell isn't here.

I've spent much of this winter in DC and, of course, same thing. I got a few sweaters for Christmas this year, but I haven't been able to wear any of them. I'll have to wait until I come back to Miami, so I can wear them in the mall or a hotel lobby. Those are the only places left in the US still experiencing winter temperatures.

At work, we've got a new project team member from Montreal (they just got a big snowstorm, so I guess someone still gets winter). He's walking around DC in shorts and sandals. Pretty soon the Quebecoise won't have to drive all the way to Hollywood; they'll be able to stop at the Jersey Shore.

Remember how cold it was last year though? And it's not a lack of cold, it's just all trapped over on the west coast where they're getting freezing temps in LA. The jet stream will correct itself with time. But this has been an unusually long spell. I'll grant you that.

That's true enough about the jet stream (it's supposed to be considerably colder soon) but this is still a bit unnerving. Keep in mind that here in the Northeast this is the second year in a row I'm seeing trees budding, hearing songbirds, etc. in mid-winter. Granted, winters here are not extreme in a normal winter, either (this isn't Minnesota) but that's pretty nutty. Many days feel more like April, and the same was true last year.

In South Florida, nothing I loved (and love) more than those clear, crisp days we can have this time of year. When you're not a hot-weather fan, it was blessed relief. Just seems like there are far fewer of them in recent years, even if not nonexistent.

Maybe if it would snow again sometime I'd feel better. I miss it.

Part of what we've seen and expect to see in the future with respect to climate change are these previously abnormal swings in temperature. No doubt we'll see extended cold fronts, too, like in LA right now, but overall, things will get slightly warmer. We've seen 334 consecutive months of warmer than average temperatures. The last time we had a month of colder than average temperatures, I was five months old.

That doesn't have much meaning without us knowing how old you are. Now if you are as old as me, then you are really talking.

Haha, my mistake. I suppose you could have done the math (334/12), but this is the Miami forum, after all! Maybe if this was a Bay Area forum...

That only works if there were no temperatures in-between that were the average. I don't know that. You're leaving me/us to assume.

I've done the math:

Peter is either 27 or 4,008 years-old. I'm going with the latter as he did once casually mention his role in the development of chariot warfare and and the rise of the Hittite Empire.
