MLS Stadium Design Competition (Cap. 20,000) - Oct 7 to December 12

ATTENTION! THE DEADLINE FOR THIS CONTEST HAS BEEN CHANGED TO DECEMBER 12, 2012.

MLS Stadium Design Competition - New England Revolution - Kraft Sports Group

In recent weeks talks have been heating up about a proposed move to a soccer-specific stadium by the New England Revolution. The Revolution current play in the cavernous Gillette Stadium, which seats 60,000+, whilst only averaging about 12-15,000 spectators per game. The Kraft Sports Group is looking for a more intimate complex for their MLS team to play in, as the recent rise in a multitude of soccer specific stadiums around the country has left them in the dust. As a stadium designer, it is your job to bring a modern, intimate, yet imposing structural presence to the team and its fans. Are you up to the task?

Location, Location Location

The Kraft Sports Group have narrowed it down to 3 locations, pictured below.

Click to enlarge images. Images have coordinates on them needed to locate them on Geolocation or Google Maps.

Construction Rules

  1. You must use one of the three lots pictured above to build the complex.
  2. The complex must contain at minimum a stadium and parking, whether above or below ground.
  3. Additional buildings, such as training fields/facilities, shopping facilities, exterior shops, etc. are encouraged but not necessary.
  4. The stadium need NOT conform to FIFA regulations, but it is strongly suggested. The field must be 105m x 69m. A roof must cover at minimum 50% of the seated capacity.
  5. The capacity shall be no less than 18,000 and no more than 25,000.
  6. It is preferred that the structural design of the stadium is built in accordance with modern trends and sustainability in mind, but those inspired by the past shall also be considered.
  7. The stadium complex must have at least (1) large digital screen for showing highlights and the match score.
  8. The stadium must contain a minimum of (10) luxury boxes.
  9. Smooth transportation in and out of the complex must be a strong consideration.
  10. The Stadium must be structurally sound. (Think of it this way, if it looks like it's going to fall, you're doing something wrong.)
  11. Use both the New England Revolution logos and the logos of their sponsors in your designing.

REVOLUTION CORPORATE SPONSORS: Sovereign Santander, United Healthcare(Kit sponsor), Putnam Investments, and American Airlines.

Presentation Rules

  1. The stadium proposal must be presented to the panel in as professional a manner as possible.
  2. The presentation must contain at least two screenshots from the exterior of the complex: one isometric view, one top view.
  3. The presentation must show a screenshot of each stand of the interior of the stadium: north, south, east, and west.
  4. It is not required, but strongly encouraged, that screenshots of various other details of the stadium are included.
  5. The presentation must discuss transport into and out of the stadium.
  6. The presentation must contain screenshots show either the interior pedestrian levels of the stadium or the interior of the vip boxes.
  7. The presentation must discuss the parking arrangments, whether under or above ground.
  8. Day and night renders are not necessary but strongly encouraged.

Any additional screenshots and/or information provided is not necessary but may help the panel in their assessment of your complex.

Deadline
  • The competition will run from October 7, 2012 to December 12, 2012.
There are no extensions. The deadline is hard and occurs on 00:01 EST on the final day.
Presentations must be posted in this threadprior to this deadline or they will not be judged.
Any contestants who miss the deadline are welcome to post for critique from their peers, but will not be eligible for the contest.

The panel will be instructed to submit their scores by December 12 @ 18:01, and a winner will be announced December 13 @ 00:01 in a separate thread.

Judging Criteria

  • Judges will asses the ten categories below from an A to F scale, with the following values out of 100 assigned to each grade:
    • A+ = 98pts. A = 95 pts. A- = 92pts.
    • B+ = 88 pts. B = 85 pts. B- = 82pts.
    • C+ = 78 pts. B = 75 pts. B- = 72pts.
    • D+ = 68 pts. B = 65 pts. B- = 62pts.
    • F = 0 pts.
  • Once grades are assigned, all thirty values (10 categories x 3 judges) will be added together, then divided by thirty, for a final average grade which will be compared to the other participants to determine a clear winner.
  • If the result is a tie, the three members of the panel will cast one vote apiece to determine the winner.

Judging Categories

- Adherence to Prescribed Rules
- Aesthetics
- Attention to Detail
- Incorporation of Design Elements(Logos, etc.)
- Judge's Choice (Grade based on the Judge's Overall Assessment of the Complex)
- Presentation
- Spectator Experience
- Structure
- Sustainability
- Transportation

Final Word of Encouragement

My main goal with this project was to bring a highly structured competition to those whose computers are not able to process massive, 60,000+ seat stadiums. I understand the brevity of the competition and it's something the judges will be instructed to factor in whilst compiling their grades. I am also a supporter of the team, so it'll bring a smile to my own face to see what you guys can come up with for them. The team deserves a new stadium, and I could think of nobody better to come up with some concepts than you guys here at SSC. Have at it, boys! (and girls)

I'm considering extending the deadline 'til christmas, general consensus is that no one can finish by the 12th.

Stay tuned.

Could you please confirm a width of 69m? As far as I know the regular FIFA pitch size is 105x68?

The current pitch at the stadium is 105m x 69m.

FIFA Laws of the Game call for between 100-110m x 64-75m for international matches, so by all accounts the current field dimensions still qualify for all competitions.

Alright. I mixed that up with UEFA laws, which state 105x68, I guess ...

This is a user-run competition, there is no prize other than being the winner of the competition. I have no affiliation with Kraft Sports Group.

Being that there were no other entries to the competition, I declare abde01 the winner of this competition by default.
