I dont think they will build it. The airport will be finished in December, yet the current airport will still be functional for God knows how long--maybe as a business jet airport temporarily until the huge Sahan City Project kicks off.

The Qatari Diar plans to resume development of the Doha Convention Center and Tower next month after two years of delays, most recently due to concerns that the 112-story structure would disrupt airplane traffic from the new Doha International Airport.

Firms with experience in high rise building projects are being invited to enter the pre-qualification stage for the construction of the Doha Convention Centre Tower.

The project is managed and developed by Lusail Real Estate Development Company on behalf of owner Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company. DCCT consists of a 122 storey building with an approximate gross built up area of 219,000 square meters above ground and 110,000 square meters below ground gross built up area for parking facilities.

It rises from a 55m x 55m base at the ground floor with the four sides of 552m high shear glass facades sloping gently inward. The Tower consists of a 400 meters tall concrete structure plus a 150 meters steel helix structure sheathed in a glass facade.

Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment, the Doha-based real estate developer, has completed more than 90% of the Qatar International Exhibition Center in Doha, and expects to deliver it by February 2013, an official told Zawya.

"Only the final touches are needed to declare the project complete before the official opening, forecasted to take place in the first quarter of next year," the source said on condition of anonymity. The total cost of the project is USD 274.7 million. Chicago-based Helmut Jahn has designed it.

The project comprises five halls without pillars. The area of each hall area varies from 5,500 to 7,500 square meters.

"Qatar needs such centers as the existing ones cannot accommodate all the convention and exhibition events held through the year in Qatar," said Taha Abdul Ghani, general manager of Inma, a distributor of plant, machinery and equipment.

"The new project is huge and will increase Qatar's capacity to host global events," he said.
