TORONTO | 592 Sherbourne St. | 179m | 52 fl | Pro

Address: 592 Sherbourne Street
Developer: Cityzen Developments
Architect: bKL Architecture of Chicago

Interesting news with respect to this development.

The cladding material will be different from what you typically find, which is glass, metal or concrete precast. The material itself will be unique, as well as the colour.

There are all kinds of new products being used all over the world, like various options in ceramic and clay. We're exploring the possibilities right now. In most high rise condos the colour comes from the glass, whether it be green, blue or grey. We're going to shift the focus to the cladding, which is usually just an accent. Colour is a huge part of this design.

Finally a Toronto building that will not be just a boring green glass condo!

Reminds me of this building:

What's up with the houses around the towers ? They look a bit odd even though the towers are nice.

Well... the project is in an old downtown residential neighbourhood. Rather than bulldoze the Victorian houses they are being incorporated into the project.
That type of historical preservation helps to save parts of our civic history and give a human scale to the project at the street level, while at the same time allowing the city to expand.

A red tower? Cool!

We don't see this color very often at highrises/skyscrapers

Indeed, red is a very rare colour for skyscrapers... But Toronto has a huge red skyscraper already.

It's good that they won't just plow over it, but it's still a bit weird to erect such a big tower next to that kind of house. I think there should be some limitations to building structures as tall as these in the nearest neighbourhood.
I just hope the developers, at least to some degree, take care of these houses and do something good to prevent them from being damaged.

It happens a lot in Toronto. There are many heritage properties with towers towering over them or soon to be towering over them. Often times, historical facades are used within the developments as well. Some examples;

Karma (139 year old heritage building to the left and 50 storey tower to the right)

Pinnacle on Adelaide (3 towers on this block with the heritage homes staying intact)

Massey Tower (60 storey in between two bank buildings)

Bisha Hotel and Condos (using the historic facade)

One Bedford (this one was quite the disaster - using the facade within the building)

FIVE (renovating, restoring 10+ heritage properties)

William R. Johnston house in it's current state;

After the work is done;

The good news is, that with these developments, these often "left to rot" heritage homes have a new life. The developers do invest money into them and often turn the homes into lobbies for the condo or even an amenity area. Mod Developments, which is behind Massey Tower and FIVE (both pictured above), is a developer that takes that extra time and money to literally "fix" up many of these properties and breathe new life into them.

Downtown Toronto has tens of thousands of brick Victorian buildings, everywhere in every neighbourhood. If we prohibited tall towers to be built in their vicinity, nothing would ever get built. A happy compromise is to save the old building as part of the project. That way, the city grows and does not just become a dusty old museum town.
