British merchant ship MV Hartland Point in Valletta Port

The British merchant ship MV Hartland Point - Point class sealift - has sailed into Valletta Port (the Grand Harbour) this morning on a four-day informal visit.

MV Hartland Point is owned by Foreland Shipping. The Point class sealift ships are ordinary merchant ships (owned Foreland Shipping) and leased to the U.K.'s Ministry of Defence, as and when needed, to carry military cargoes and vehicles.

MV Hartland Point is presently in the Mediterranean as part of Royal Navy's Cougar-12 deployment, together with HMS Illustrious, HMS Bulwark, HMS Northumberland, HMS Montrose and RFA Mounts Bay.

MV Hartland Point is presently berthing afloat in Dock-4 (at Palumbo SY, in French Creek), and she's expected to sail from Malta on Friday, November 23th.

The Russian Federation naval auxiliary vessel RFS Ivan Bubnov - a Boris Chilikin class (Project 1559/1593) replenishment tanker - has sailed into Valletta Port (Grand Harbour) this morning on a four-day courtesy visit.

The Russian tanker is presently berthing alongside at Pinto-4/5 Wharf, and she's expected to sail from Malta on Monday, December 17th, 1630LT.

Despite not being a good year economically speaking in Spain, our main port at least seems to be avoiding the crisis and keep growing.

It's expected to achieve in Algeciras a freight volume of around 90 million tons and more than 4 millions TEU's at the end of this year.

El puerto de Algeciras cerrará 2012 con un tráfico total de 90 millones de toneladas

El presidente de la Autoridad Portuaria de la Bahía de Algeciras (APBA), Manuel Morón, ha calificado 2012 como "un buen año" pese a la crisis, ya que se cerrará con un tráfico portuario total de "90 millones de toneladas, lo que supone un incremento aproximado del diez por ciento respecto al ejercicio anterior".

Durante un desayuno con los periodistas, Morón ha especificado que, a falta de 12 días para cerrar el ejercicio, el tráfico de contenedores podría superar los cuatro millones de Teus --contenedores estandarizados de seis metros--, un 13,5 por ciento más que en 2011.

De esta cantidad destaca la partida correspondiente a los contenedores de importación/exportación, que podrían alcanzar los 184.000 Teus. Esta cifra, aunque muy pequeña todavía en relación al volumen total de contenedores manipulados, representaría un incremento cercano al ocho por ciento respecto a la cifra alcanzada en el año anterior.

El tráfico del Estrecho también experimenta subidas con relación al ejercicio precedente. Así, el tráfico de pasajeros alcanzaría los 4,8 millones de personas; un 7,4 por ciento más que el año anterior. Asimismo, el de vehículos en régimen de pasaje alcanzaría las 1.142.000 unidades, un 4,2 por ciento más; y el de camiones llegará a las 238.640 unidades, lo que representaría un incremento de un 6,3 por ciento respecto al ejercicio de 2011.

Aunque el número de buques entrados a puerto disminuirá aproximadamente un nueve por ciento respecto al año anterior, estimándose en estos momentos una cifra de 26.000 buques, las unidades de arqueo bruto (GT) de estos buques podrían alcanzar los 340 millones de GT, un 3,2 por ciento más que el año anterior, lo que refleja el mayor tamaño de los buques entrados este año a puerto.

Asimismo, y de cara al año 2013, Manuel Morón ha afirmado que comenzará con dos acontecimientos "muy importantes". El primero de ellos, la entrada en explotación de la nueva terminal de graneles líquidos de Vopak en Isla Verde Exterior, actividad que añadirá en 2013 unos cuatro millones de toneladas de mercancías más al movimiento actual del puerto, lo que llevaría al Puerto de Algeciras a estar muy cerca de los 100 millones de toneladas anuales de tráfico portuario total, cifra que en la actualidad solo superan en Europa los puertos de Rotterdam, Amberes y Hamburgo.
