If the newspapers report to be believed, some of the 'unwilling' farmers now want their cash but the BDO office has turned down their requests. |

Park Street carnival to get anthem this year
Millions of revellers swayed to the music when Usha Uthup crooned on Park Street way back in 1960s. The all-time favourite singer is set to make a big-bang comeback on the fun street this Christmas with the anthem of the Park Street Carnival. So make it a point to be at Allen Park on December 25 to experience the diva sing the anthem live in front of a spirited audience.
Speaking to TOI from Bahrain, Uthup said she was attempting to rope in as many singers as possible. "I am very excited about the song and expect it to become a rage in the days ahead," she said. Restaurateurs on the food street are equally delighted about Uthup's return and are indeed keen to embrace the song. "The romance with Park Street never ends. Despite so much development across the city, the charm of Park Street has remained the same for over a century. It surely deserves an anthem," said Oasis owner Pratap Daryanani. The state tourism department has lined up a slew of activities on Park Street in the run-up to Christmas to turn the heart of the city into a tourist hotspot during the festive season. The department is pumping in Rs 50 lakh into the festivity. Though events ranging from band sessions, Christmas carols, karaoke and DJ evenings, heritage tour, vintage parade and food fest are scheduled for five days at Allen Park, the street is expected to be a hub of activity for 20 days beginning this Sunday, when the Park Street fest kicks off. With barely five days to go before the high-decibel carnival kicks off, state tourism department minister Krisnendu Narayan Chowdhury on Tuesday met Anglo Indian MLA Shane Calvert and The Park Kolkata managing director Vijay Dewan to assess the preparedness. "The carnival will be organized in a big way this year. Food stalls will also be there offering a wide variety of cuisine to suit diverse tastes and preferences," the minister said. The carnival officially commences on December 16 and concludes on Christmas. Altogether, five days - December 16, 18, 21, 23 and 25 - have been selected for events at Allen Park. Park Street apart, Mullickbazar, Kolkata airport, Sealdah and Howrah stations and various church and cathedrals will also be illuminated. Apart from professional bands like Orient Express, Span, Krosswindz, Hip Pocket and performance by students of Calcutta School of Music, various schools will present carols at the carnival. A food festival competition on Anglo Indian cuisine will be conducted by Chef Rozario on Christmas day that will also see a heritage church visit at Park Street and adjoining areas, and a vintage parade involving buggies, tom toms and vintage cars. Darjeeling tribute to Beatles this Xmas
As the cityfolks celebrate Christmas, city boy and renowned Western classical musician and violinist Abraham Mazumdar will be busy in the Hills, paying tribute to The Beatles . Come December 25 and Mazumdar and his group Kolkata Music Academy Chamber Orchestra will present a fusion of Beatles songs on an open stage at Chowrasta.
The organizing committee of the Darjeeling Tea and Tourism Festival (DTTF) has roped in the artiste to celebrate 50 years of the English rock band. The Kolkata Music Academy Chamber Orchestra, which Mazumdar had founded in 1983, will perform on the occasion. "We had approached Mazumdar to participate in the DTTF this year. We had expressed our intention to celebrate 50 years of Beatles and it was Mazumdar who came up with the idea to play Beatles song by fusing orchestra with contemporary electric music. Our idea is to pay tribute to the band that played a key role in changing certain aspects of our lives through their songs," said Vikram Rai, DTTF joint secretary. Mazumdar had also performed Tagore in Symphony in Germany in April, 2012, on invitation from the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra along with compositions by the great masters of European classical music. He also conducted a tribute concert of "Mohiner Ghoraguli", India's first rock band, in 2008 in Kolkata. Talking about the collaboration, Rai added: "Darjeeling is known for its music, especially in the Western genre. In this regard, most of our musicians have in some way been influenced by The Beatles. Secondly, very few from the Hills are exposed to classical concerts and orchestra. This will be a major attraction of the 17-day festival." In fact, the DTTF committee has also organized Battle of the Bands, a musical contest where bands from Shillong, Sikkim, Kolkata and the Hills region will take part. "We would like to emulate Kohima's Hornbill Festival," said Rajeev Thattal, the music coordinator of DTTF. Bands that will perform in the contest include Kolkata's Parikrama, Sikkim's Still Waters, Robin, New Revolution and Shillong's Lou Majaw. Local old-timer Prism, which has shifted base to Nepal, will also participate. This apart, the organizing committee is eyeing to break the world record by making 700 guitarists play the song "Imagine" at one go. Source |

Brit contemporary art exhibition in Kolkata
Showcasing the best of art being produced by leading contemporary artists in Britain, an upcoming four-city art exhibition in India will grapple with the relationship between self and place in a world of transitory identities and contested geographies.
Culled from the art collection of the British Council, the exhibition, Homelands, which will travel to New Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore and Mumbai from January, is a unique take on contemporary British art by Indian curator Latika Gupta. Including more than 80 works by 28 leading modern and contemporary artists, Homelands excavates the idea of a homeland to reveal a rich plurality of meaning; ideas of belonging, alienation, history and memory. The collection includes works by four Turner Prize winners Jeremy Deller, Richard Long, Grayson Perry and Gillian Wearing. Four of the showcased artists are being invited to visit the exhibition in India, including Mona Hatoum, Suki Dhanda and Zineb Sedira. During their stay, the artists will engage with audiences, through seminars, curator-led walks, outreach activities and workshops. Curator Gupta says the collection raises questions like what constitutes a homeland ethnicity, language, religion, customs or beliefs. Today, many of us move across national boundaries. We are born in one country, we make another our home. In the criss-crossing of political, social and cultural borders, we live our lives through hyphenated identities: belonging here and there; inhabiting multiple places - both physical and metaphorical, she said. Rob Lynes, director, British Council India, said: It asks such fundamental questions about a world thats changing in front of our eyes, about the sometimes bewildering identity crisis that, for so many of us, constitutes modern life. Homelands demonstrates that art can help us learn about the world around us: but also, that it can help us learn about ourselves on a whole different level. Source |

Property Valuation dilemma
Has anyone tried to register a property recently and found that the valuation rates are way overboard ? I bought an office space 3-4 years ago in Salt Lake and when I try to register the property now, I find that the valuation rate is about 2 times the price I had bought. Further it is about 50 % more than the prevailing market price. Is there any way I can appeal to the valuation rates given and get a fair valuation price ? Further, the project is a joint venture between a private promoter and Bidhannagar Municipality. Hence the disparity in valuation is surprising.

You can get a review. Get hold of an advocate who deals in real estate matters. He will be able to guide you. Pl note one thing that the rate considered during registry has nothing to do with the purchase rate.

Hollywood studios are showing interest in developing the two state-of-the-art film cities planned in West Bengal, Finance Minister Amit Mitra today said.
The state government had earlier announced plans of making at least two film cities, one each in Uttarpara, a few km from Kolkata and the other one in north Bengal. "Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had identified the spots and accordingly land has already been allocated for the two film cities. Expression of interest are flowing in from various quarters," Mitra said at FICCI's media and entertainment business conclave. Recently, executives of company who had developed a film city in Manchester told him that they are interested in developing the ones coming up in Bengal. "Another major studio in the US has also expressed interest. The film industry has tremendous national and international potential," the minister said. The film cities being planned will not only work for the film and television industry but will also be a hub for animation, gaming and special effects, he said. Stating that infrastructure is very critical for the industry, Mitra said Bengal is already a hub of creativity and with the film cities, the entire eco-system will be complete. On a number of occasions, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that Tollywood must reach out to Bollywood and Hollywood to bridge the gap between the film industries. During a meeting with US secretary of state Hillary Clinton, she had sought a joint endeavour to work together for the development of Bengal's entertainment industry. |
