Iraq adds 250 megawatts to national grid

By Khayoun Saleh

Azzaman, November 25, 2012

Iraq says a newly constructed power plant in the southern Province of Babel is now fully operations, adding 250 megawatts to the national grid.

Electricity Ministry spokesperson Musaib al-Mudarisi said the plant includes two generating units each with 125 megawatts and has already been linked to the national grid.

The plant was inaugurated by Prime Minister Noori al-Maliki who in his opening remarks noted that “Iraq, and in accordance to the timings laid down by the Ministry of Electricity, will have surplus power.”

The ministry has promised to put an end to outages the latest by the end of 2013.

Currently, Iraqis enjoy up to 20 hours of uninterrupted supplies from the national grid.

Electricity Minister Abdulkarim al-Jumaili was on a visit to the Province of Basra last week, inspecting power plants under construction and relaying good news for Iraqis that if goes according to plan they will have continuous power supply in the summer of 2013, the first time in more than two decades.

The ministry banks on the progress of work at the country’s largest power plan at Zubaidiyat.

The plant’s capacity is estimated at 2540 megawatts, with two of its unit – 330 megawatts for each – scheduled for completion in early 2013.

Once the two units are completed, Zubaidiyat is expected to supply the national grid with 330 megawatts every four months until the plant reaches its estimated capacity of 2540 megawatts.

New five-year plan aims to improve Iraqi electricity services

2012-11-20 By Khalid al-Taie in Baghdad

The Iraqi Electricity Ministry prepared a new five-year plan (2015-2020) that aims to strengthen electricity production, transmission and distribution across the country, ministry officials said last week.

Ministry spokesperson Musab al-Mudarres told Mawtani the plan includes several projects, such as transforming gas-powered electric generators throughout Iraq from open cycle to the closed cycle system.

This means "every two gas units would have a thermal unit beside them, which would increase [the amount of] power generated by more than half without consuming additional fuel", he added.

The new plan also involves building new thermoelectric power stations in Baghdad, Ninawa, and Salaheddine provinces to increase overall electricity production, rehabilitating power transmission and distribution networks, and extending such networks to a number of villages and rural areas currently deprived of electricity services, he said.

In addition, it will focus attention on improving the skills of those working in the sector through training courses and programmes, according to al-Mudarres.

"In the past few days, the ministry accomplished the highest rate of power supplied to citizens, as supply hours in all provinces ranged between 20 and 24 hours per day," he told Mawtani.

This level of service was possible because a number of new electric generators have entered into service, raising the overall volume of energy production to more than 8,000 megawatts per day, compared with last year's figure of around 5,700 megawatts per day, he said.

In addition, this year's moderate temperatures led to a drop in electric power consumption, which contributed to reducing the load on the electricity grid and improving the hours of energy supply, al-Mudarres said.

The ministry will make an effort to maintain this record level of supplies during winter and summer, the seasons when power is in maximum demand, he said.

"We now have a number of [electricity generating] units under rehabilitation, which will go into service within a month and a half and add about 900 megawatts [per day to the volume of energy production]," he said. "Also, by the middle of next month, the Hilla gas-powered station, with a capacity of producing 250 megawatts [per day], will begin working."

With the addition of electric generators at three stations -- al-Khairat in Karbala, al-Quds in Baghdad and al-Qayyara in Mosul -- this figure will be augmented by at least 750 megawatts per day, according to al-Mudarres.

"[We hope] energy production will go up to around 16,000 megawatts [per day] by the end of the year, and to 20,000 megawatts by the end of 2014," he said. "With that, we will have reached self-sufficiency in electricity."

ACCOMPLISHING PLAN ON SCHEDULE KEY
Suzanne al-Saad, member of the parliamentary energy committee, told Mawtani, "We believe that accomplishing the goals of the plan is key; planning for projects related to the electricity sector is important but what is more important is to execute these projects without delays and according to the specified schedule, so the public will see the positive impact of such strategic plans."

"We hope the latest improvement in supplies is a good omen, and that it will not be a temporary improvement that vanishes when winter season starts and electric energy consumption goes up," she said.

Ihsan al-Awadi, member of the parliamentary reconstruction and services committee, urged all Iraqis to work together to improve electricity services in the country.

"The solution of the electricity crisis requires great efforts that fall not only on the shoulders of the state," he said. "Citizens must also partake in [these efforts] by conserving energy and refraining from encroaching on the electricity network."

Why no nukes? Iraq certainly has the base load demand for at least 3 nuclear power stations. One in the south, one in the centre and one in the north. Will free up more oil and gas for export too...

Syscom 18 Wins Deal for Power Metering Systems
Posted on 06 December 2012. Tags: Electricity, Romania, Syscom 18

By John Lee.
Syscom 18, the Romanian company specialising in industrial automation and measuring systems, has won a contract worth three million euros in Iraq.
The project involves the “design, construction, installation, electrical and automation side and starting operations of 40 fiscal metering systems”, to be integrated into two power plants; project completion is scheduled for the second half of 2013.
Ion Andronache, President of Syscom 18, commented:
“The fast development pace of the oil and gas segment in the region, but also our previous work experience in other countries in the Middle East, helped us win this project.
“Given that the regional markets continued to have a high economic potential, their financial and energy resources remained at important parameters and the Middle East further needs equipment of industrial measurement and control for oil exploitation.
“Six years ago still, we decided to orient a significant part of our business efforts to the external market and we did well. This year, about 25 percent of our revenue structure comes from international projects.“
He continued:
“Iraq is for us a region of great interest. There are currently some serious opportunities for foreign companies wishing to implement projects in the Iraqi energy field. Their national development plans aim to satisfy, through the large projects of providing electricity, population’s increasing energy demands.
“So that power plants will be built, imports of electricity will increase, infrastructure is to be constructed. In other words, large investments into projects are expected, and experienced foreign companies in the field will also have access, those capable to implement short or long-term projects.
“Beyond the construction and operation of the power systems and units, opportunities will arise for the training of Iraqi engineers, managers and other staff in the energy sector.“

I did a small sheet (part of work) with some ongoing electricity projects. may be interesting for everyone here.

from my numbers there should be about 24GW of contracted / out for contract power stations in Iraq.

Diwaniyah, Electricity, Elsewedy

Elsewedy Electric (SWDY), the leading wire cable and integrated energy solution provider in the Middle East and Africa, through one of its subsidiaries, announces the signing of a US$ 169 Million contract in Iraq with the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity to build and operate a new power plant in Diwaniya, with four 125 MW General Electric gas turbines.
The gas-fired 500 megawatt power projects is located 23 km west of Aldiwaniya city and shall be completed within 18-months on an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) basis. The contract does not include the supply of the four GE gas turbines that have already been purchased by the Government of Iraq from General Electric in a mega deal that consisted of 56 gas turbines in 2008.
Elsewedy Electric’s scope of work includes design, procurement and installation of all balance of plant in addition to the erection and testing of the GE gas turbines. In addition, Elsewedy Electric will be responsible for the spare parts and six months of operation and maintenance after the completion of the project.
The Arab Contractors will be responsible for all the civil, construction and site utilities for the project.
Iraq, holder of the world’s fifth-largest oil reserves, is struggling to raise power supplies, which are currently at about 7,500 megawatts, or half of its domestic demand of about 15,000 megawatts.
Elsewedy Electric’s first office in Iraq was opened in 2006 in Erbil.

A new $169 million power plant has opened south of Baghdad, government officials said Wednesday (December 26th).

Salam al-Quraishi, economic advisor to the Iraqi government, told Al-Shorfa that China's Shanghai Electric completed the Wasit thermal power plant in al-Diwaniyah, 180 kilometres south of Baghdad.

The plant entered into service on Tuesday after 18 months under construction, he said, adding that it is expected to add 330 megawatts of electricity to the national grid on a daily basis.

"Opening the new plant will reduce the number of hours electricity is cut off for citizens in central and southern Iraq," al-Quraishi said.
a confused article... seems to conflagate the new $169M GE-unit gas turbine that has just been signed for Diwaniya, with completing of one of the units of the China-Shanghai mega-station in Wasit...

Iraq hires French firm to build electricity stations

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity signed a $74 million contract with a French company, Schneider, on Saturday (December 29th, 2012) to build 20 power stations across the country and bolster electricity production.

The new secondary stations, which will operate on multiple energy sources to avoid shortage of fuel supplies, will provide the national grid with about 660 kilovolts of power daily, ministry spokesperson Musab al-Mudarres told Mawtani.

Six of the stations will be installed in Basra province, five in Dhi Qar and three in Maysan, while two stations per city will be set up in Muthanna, Baghdad and Babil, he said.

The stations "will help to stabilise the rate of electric power supplies to the southern areas of Iraq, especially during the summer season, by connecting them to the national grid system once they are completed", al-Mudarres said.

The contract includes the design, construction and commissioning of the stations, with a five-year continuing maintenance period, he said, in addition to the supply and installation of equipment, the provision of spares, and the training of Iraqi engineering and technical staff.

"Work on the new stations does not cancel other work on similar projects, which are currently being executed by Siemens and Mitsubishi since about a year now in southern Iraq, and some of which are near completion," he said.

GEOGRAPHIC SURVEYS BEGIN
The 20 stations are expected to be completed within 18 months, Salam al-Quraishi, economic advisor for the Iraqi government, told Mawtani.

"A technical team from France's Schneider company -- comprised of 12 experts and technicians -- arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday to start work on the geographical surveys of the sites where the stations are to be built," he said.

"We can say that the electricity crisis in Iraq is on its way to disappear within a year and a half at the latest," deputy prime minister for services affairs, Saleh al-Mutlaq, told Mawtani.

There are 53 companies currently working in Iraq's energy sector, al-Mutlaq said, of which 43 are western and regional "with extensive experience".

These companies provide Iraqi youth with thousands of jobs, he added.

Liqaa Mahdi, a member of the Iraqi parliament's general services committee, called on the Ministry of Electricity to "press the companies working on electricity projects to complete their projects within the specified time in view of the hardship suffered by citizens because of the lack of electric energy in their homes, shops, and workplaces".

"The Iraqi government, and the electricity ministry in particular, should focus on executing their work programmes in the new year, because much damage was inflicted on the people and the country's economy largely because factories and plants stopped producing due to the loss of energy," Mahdi told Mawtani.

Means that by 2014 Iraq would have electricity 24/7 from the national grid.
Or a failed plan ?

LS Industrial wins US$67 mln deal in Iraq
SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Yonhap) -- LS Industrial Systems Co., a leading South Korean manufacturer of electric components, said Thursday it has won a US$67 million deal to build a power distribution control center for the Iraqi government.

Under the deal with Iraq's Ministry of Electricity, the company will build seven distribution control centers across the country by early 2015, LS Industrial said in a press release. The deal is the biggest a local firm has won in the smart grid sector.

The distribution control center, which operates on wireless technology, functions based on a smart grid technology that enables a more efficient power management system.

With the latest deal, LS Industrial has logged $106.4 million worth of deals in Iraq this year. Earlier this month, the company clinched a $39.4 million deal to build a gas insulated switchgear facility in the Middle East country.

The company pledged to bolster its overseas business on the back of the Iraqi projects.

"Following the successful completion of the projects, (the company) aims to invigorate the local market as well as strengthen overseas expansion," said a company official in charge of smart grid technology.
