Only the world's best dive sites...

SCIENCE
WATCH: Google Street View Lets Users Virtually Dive the Great Barrier Reef

Google Street View, in partnership with the Catlin Seaview Survey, have unveiled the first ever underwater panoramic images, allowing users to virtually explore one of the world's great natural wonders.

While Apple continue to fiddle with their badly received maps application, Google Maps seems to be going from strength to strength. So much so that the Street View feature, launched in 2007, is now being expanded to allow viewers to dive into oceans, swim with the turtles, and generally nose around one of the world’s great coral reefs.

On Wednesday Google launched its eagerly awaited inaugural underwater panoramic images on Google Maps. Depending on how cynical you are, this is either an invaluable tool for opening inaccessible parts of the world to help scientists and perhaps inspire future Jacques Cousteau, or part of some as-yet unrevealed plan to document every geographical square meter of the planet for their own nefarious ends.

(MORE: Scientists Find That Climate Change Stalls Reef Growth)

Whatever your spin on it may be, the new feature is undeniably the best thing to hit Street View since the search giant captured panoramic views of Antarctica in 2010. Partnering with the Catlin Seaview Survey, which aims to make the underwater world accessible to a wider audience as well as study the effects of climate change, users will be able to take a ‘virtual dive’ on the Great Barrier Reef.

(MORE: Google Street View Goes to Antarctica)

Using the world’s first tablet-operated underwater camera, the Google team is in the process of putting together up to 50,000 high-definition panoramic images of the reef. Underwater panoramic images will also be available for other destinations such as Hawaii and the Philippines.

So far you can see scenes such as snorkelers swimming along in the waters of Hawaii’s Hanuama Bay, the ancient boulder corals by Apo Island in the Philippines and manta ray swimming in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef. More virtual dive images will be added as scientists collect mappings of 20 different reefs along the Great Barrier Reef’s 2,300km system.

Apo Island near Dumaguete counted among world's greatest reefs

Is nowhere safe from Google? Now StreetView becomes SeaView with virtual tours of the world's great coral reefs

It has covered streets, parks, historic monuments, and even Scott's hut in the Antarctic.
Now, Google has gone underwater for its latest addition to its street view service - with tours of the world's greatest coral reefs.

The images reveal stunning coral reefs from around the world. Here, Apo island in the Philippines can be seen.

In The Know: Apo Island, the ultimate dive destination

Apo Island, located off the coast of Negros Oriental, covers approximately 70 hectares and hosts 106 ha of coral reef.

A renowned diving site, the island was established as a marine sanctuary in 1982. In 1994, the reserve became part of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ protected landscape and seascape.

Home to 650 documented fish species and 400 kinds of corals, Apo Island was included in a 2008 list of the world’s “ultimate dive destinations” compiled by the UK-based Sport Diver magazine.

The official publication of the Professional Association of Diving Instructors described the island as replete with a continuous chain of underwater life with hard and soft corals attracting reef fish like snappers, surgeonfish, damselfish, parrotfish, anemone fish and wrasse, which in turn invite large species like barracuda, tuna, white tip and blacktip, turtles and manta rays.

Falling under the municipality of Dauin, Apo Island has 918 residents based on the 2010 Census. Inquirer Research

Surf and Music Festival Day 2: Aki, the old man of the sea

Text by Tricia Aquino | Photos by Bernard Testa, InterAksyon.com · Friday, November 2, 2012

Kazuo 'Aki' Akinaga, 65, a Japanese national and long-time resident of La Union is a local celebrity in the province's surfing town of San Juan.

Quote:
The locals call him Aki.

He was sitting outside a local surf school, staring at the waves, a Beer na Beer in hand, this Japanese man who might just be the granddaddy of surfing in La Union.

“Age 65 and still surfing,” he told this writer, grinning. “Your father is older than me.”

In 1981, Kazuo Akinaga was working in a surfboard factory in Tokyo when he came across an article in an American magazine.

“The article was about the Aurora province, Baler, then La Union,” he recalled. “Then all (of us) surfboard workers went on a surf trip from Manila until Pagudpud. I stopped in many places, (including) La Union, Laoag, and Pagudpud. Then I started (going) back and forth, back and forth (from La Union to Japan).”
