BCDA monorail project gets Japan grant

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) said the government of Japan was funding the pre-feasibility study of the BCDA Monorail project, which would connect the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) system to Bonifacio Global City and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

Casanova said the proposed 12.56-km alignment of the BCDA monorail project would start from the MRT 3 Station in Guadalupe, enter Bonifacio Global City through the north gate and end at NAIA 3 Terminal Building.

The monorail project is seen to be completed by 2016.

Gov’t eyes further extension of LRT 1

Plans are being drawn up to extend the Light Rail Transit (LRT) line further south until Dasmariñas, Cavite, as the government tries to keep up with mass transit requirements in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas II said a feasibility study on the project was set to be started this year to see whether it would make sense to have another station in Dasmariñas instead of ending the LRT line in Imus, Cavite.

He said plans for Dasmariñas would not interfere with the current bidding for the LRT extension from Baclaran in Pasay, to Imus.

Extending the 30-year-old LRT line 1, which runs all the way to Roosevelt, Quezon City, would benefit the millions of Cavite residents who commute to work around Metro Manila daily.

Another train project waiting government approval is the LRT line 2 East Extension from Sampaloc, Marikina, to Antipolo’s Masinag Junction. The project is awaiting the green light from the National Economic and Development Authority. All projects worth more than P500 million need approval from the Neda Board, which is led by the President.

THE National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) has approved the Light Railway Transit (LRT) Line 2 East Extension Project that will cost P9.6 billion.

The project will make travel from Rizal province to Manila easier and faster because two terminals will be added to the existing LRT Line 2 that stretches from Claro M. Recto Avenue in Manila to Santolan in Pasig City. Under the approved project, a 4.19-kilometer extension rail will be constructed giving rise to two new stations—Emerald Drive in Cainta, and Masinag Junction in Antipolo City.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas II in his official Twitter account said the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board headed by the President has "formally OK'd" the following projects: the Light Rail Transit 2 (LRT 2) East Extension, the Daraga Airport in Albay, the Panglao Airport in Bohol and the acquisition of 52 new coaches for the Metro Rail Transit (MRT).

"Tuloy-tuloy na ito (These will surely be rolled out)," said Roxas, who was the Transportation chief prior to his recent appointment to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

The P9.7-billion LRT-2 east extension project involves the construction as well as operation and maintenance of a 4.19-kilometer railroad from the existing Santolan Station in Pasig to the Masinag Junction in Antipolo.

The P8.6-billion MRT expansion project is meanwhile expected to increase the capacity of the train system which plies EDSA.

Government data show that the MRT currently transports an average of 500,000 passengers daily, exceeding its capacity of 350,000.

Also approved was the planned P4.8-billion international-standard airport in Daraga, which is also seen to replace the Legazpi City Airport in the Bicol province of Albay.

Another international-standard airport will also be constructed in Panglao with an estimated cost of P7.4 billion, replacing the Tagbilaran Airport in Bohol.

NEDA Board approval is the last stage before major government infrastructure projects are offered for public bidding.

The NEDA Board is composed of the President as chairperson, the Socioeconomic Planning Secretary as vice chairman, and several other Cabinet level officials.

MRTtrackr: An Android App for Train Commuters in Manila

If you’re anything but patient and waiting is the bane of your existence, you know how hard it is to patiently wait for the next train – especially if you’re in the rush.

MRTtrackr is an Android app aimed at commuters in Metro Manila, the Philippines, that helps train passengers find the nearest station, and provide itinerary and basic information about LRT and MRT lines. Founded by Ryan Escarez and Michie Ang, this startup is all about helping the community.

MRTtrackr is currently in beta and already has more than 1,000 users and 4,000 more who signed up to become beta testers. They’re gradually adding more but need to control the amount of feedback they receive.

Improvements on LRT Line 1 under way

Improvements on the three-decade-old Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1 finally started following a local construction firm’s successful bid to secure the contract for a key component of the rehabilitation project.

In a notice of award published Tuesday, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) announced that phase 2 of the LRT Line 1’s comprehensive safety, reliability and capacity improvement project was given to local industrial firm Jorgman Planning and Development Corp.

The contract worth P104.76 million involves the replacement of gantry anchor bolts that run through 23 kilometers of the LRT Line 1’s original section from Baclaran in Pasay to Monumento, Caloocan. The previous approved budget for the phase 2 project was P150 million.

Other phases of Line 1’s rehabilitation project include the replacement of 23 kilometers of train tracks that were installed when the LRT 1 was first built.

The fourth phase will cover the rehabilitation of 21 dilapidated train cars, which are still in use, while the final phase involves the P197-million restoration of 14 train cars that are no longer running due to damage and other defects.

UP Monorail: 'Ikot' jeeps of the future arrive at UP Diliman

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Philippines Diliman campus is about to witness a major transportation upgrade really soon, an alternative to the aging "UP Ikot," iconic yellow jeepneys that ply a circular route around the UP Campus.

Through its official Facebook page, the Philippine National Railways unveiled what will soon be a fixture in the Quezon City campus: an electric-powered monorail system.

The monorail system or the Automated Guideway Transit System (AGTS) is a locally developed transportation system that could soon be the "future of mass transport systems made by Filipinos,” according to Science and Technology Secretary Mario Montejo.

The joint project between the DOST and the University of the Philippines Diliman saw the construction of a 465-meter test track that runs from CP Garcia Avenue (near the Commission on Higher Education building) to Jacinto Street along the College of Fine Arts.

The already constructed monorail tracks stand at an elevation of 6.1 meters. Two monorail cars designed with DOST and UP colors, blue and maroon arrived at the site Sunday, November 25.

If successful, the project will move onto Phase 2 which will cover a route that includes points not covered by existing jeepney systems: Philcoa (1), CP Garcia (2), Lakandula (3), Delos Reyes (4), College of Engineering (5), Science Complex (6), Katipunan(7), Vinzons Hall (8), International Center (9), Laurel (10), Commonwealth Ave (11), Commission on Human Rights (12), and UP-Ayala Technohub (13).

San Miguel secures JICA funding for MRT-7

MANILA, Philippines - The Japanese government, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has approved funding for the much-awaited Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Line 7.

Now that the funding is ready, MRT-7 proponent San Miguel Corp. (SMC) said it will start construction of the railway immediately once it secures government approval.

SMC president Ramon Ang said ongoing discussions with the Department of Finance (DOF) will be completed within the year. The discussions, however, do not include some conditions stipulated by the agency.
The MRT-7 project involves the construction of a 22-kilometer train line with 14 stations traversing North Avenue, Elliptical Road, Commonwealth Avenue, Quirino Avenue, and San Jose del Monte in Bulacan.

The project has been delayed for almost 4 years because of the failure of the proponent to secure a performance undertaking from the DOF. A performance undertaking is crucial so the MRT-7 proponent can secure financing for the project.

Universal LRT Corp., which used to be owned by Israeli businessman Eli Levin before he sold it to businessman Salvador Zamora II, held the right to develop the railway system. In 2010, however, SMC acquired a 51% interest in Universal LRT. -

The Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) will take the lead in building a monorail, estimated to cost P24 billion to P26 billion, linking Bonifacio Global City (BGC), the Makati central business district and the Ninoy Aquino international airport (NAIA).

BCD president and chief executive officer Arnel Casanova said the idea is to open access between, and ease traffic to, these areas.

Casanova said a pre-feasibility study would be undertaken by a consultant which would be named in January. But based on a concept study, the project would cost anywhere between P24 billion and P26 billion.

The study would determine the alignment as well as the stops of the monorail but most of those for right-of-way are within BCDA properties.

Casanova said the BCDA is coordinating with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the Makati City government and the Department of Transportation and Communication on the plan which would be undertaken either under the private-public partnership or through official development assistance.

He said traffic within BGC is smooth but it can only be accessed through two narrow streets, Kalayaan and McKinley.

“We want to have more transportation means to link and complement these areas,” Casanova said.

Touring Manila is made easier by the availability of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) or the Yellow Line. You can utilize LRT1 to reach certain tourist attractions.

• Vito Cruz - This is the most convenient stop if you’re heading to Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and Aliw Theater. Look for the orange multi-cabs bound to CCP Complex. Manila Bay along Roxas Boulevard is the best spot to watch the city’s legendary sunset. Vito Cruz is also the closest station to De La Salle University

• Quirino Avenue – Say it’s a family day and you’re taking the kids to Manila Zoo, alight at the nearest station - Quirino Avenue.

• Pedro Gil Station – Bar hopping in Malate? Get off at Pedro Gil station. Also visit the premier university – University of the Philippines Manila campus.

• United Nation (UN) Avenue – The gateway to Manila’s top tourist spot - Rizal Park (Luneta). Within the park there are many attractions like the One Stop Jose Rizal Heritage Trail, the relief map, the huge Sultan Kudarat statue, the Japanese Garden, the Chinese Garden, the relief map of the Philippines, and the dancing fountains. Also check out the playground beside the park and look for the KM0 marker across Rizal’s monument. Don’t leave without visiting the National Museum too. Paco Park can also be reached by foot or pedicab from UN Avenue.


Rizal Park

• Central Terminal (Lawton) – the Manila City Hall with its towering wall clock can be reached by foot from Central Terminal station. Across it are the beautiful golf course and the walled city of Intramuros. Don’t miss Fort Santiago, the seat of the Archdiocese of Manila and San Agustin Church - the UNESCO World Heritage. Also must-see is the old forgotten Metropolitan Theater. Cross to Liwasang Bonifacio just fronting this old structure. The vicinity is also home to major educational institutions such as Mapua, PLM, Lyceum and Letran. You can also ride a jeep that passes by the impressive San Sebastian church.


Intramuros

• Carriedo Station – Explore the heart of the colorful Quiapo and marvel at the diverse culture - Muslims, Christians and Chinese thriving here. Check out the bustling streets turned into flea-markets but be sure to guard your belongings. Try the cuisines in Binondo and do a Do-It-Yourself walking tour with your friends. Look for the old commercial hub of Escolta, the Church of Santa Cruz and Avenida Rizal. Visit the Black Nazarene inside the Quiapo Church and the Golden Mosque concealed in the busy district.

• Doroteo Jose – Whether you’re heading to Divisoria or transferring to the Purple Line or LRT 2, or to the University Belt (Mendiola) to visit the gothic church of San Sebastian and check out the astounding ceiling of San Beda church, this is the station for you to disembark (see Central Station).

• Blumentritt Station – Want to see the old PNR (Philippine National Railways) that goes all the way to Bicol? Then get off at this station, if you still have the time and energy to explore places in Alabang, then hop inside the train but make sure you guard your belongings.

• Tayuman Station – The gateway to the oldest university in Asia – University of Sto. Thomas, marvel at the impressive façade of its buildings and drop by at the UST Museum.

• R.Papa Station – If you’re interested in dark tourism, then this station would be beneficial to you. This is where you stop if you want to go on tom hopping – visit the North Cemetery, Chinese Cemetery and the oldest cemetery in Manila - La Loma Cemetery. Also visit the lechon district of La Loma which prides itself as the lechon capital of the country.

• Monumento Station – Want to see the monument of Andres Bonifacio created by the National Artist Guillermo Tolentino? This is where you need to get off if. Don’t leave without exploring Malabon’s heritage houses as well as its art galleries.
