Are those black tiles on the balconies, or covers? Because I think the black/white checkered pattern on the balconies would look better than just plain white.

High-rise gardening

When is a skyscraper not just a skyscraper? When it's a garden too, says Helen Babbs

Forget London's monolithic new Shard, all eyes will surely be on the Bosco Verticale when it opens in Milan at the end of this year. The new skyscraper promises to bring a hectare of forest into the city's central business district, as well as hundreds of new homes. Rather than cold steel and glass, the surface of this high-rise will ripple with organic life.

Made of two towers – one 80m high, the other 112m – Bosco Verticale is currently being planted with 730 specially cultivated trees, 11,000 groundcover plants and 5,000 shrubs. One of the principal architects, Stefano Boeri, calls it both "radical" and an "experiment"; a reaction against the "high parallelepipeds, clad by glass, steel or ceramic" he's witnessed in Dubai.

Da notare: il "Pellantone", rarissimo ibrido nato da madre Pelli e padre Diamantone. Avvistabile solo da zona p.za Susa.

I'm pretty sure whoever came up with this idea is aware that roots are extremely invasive, high winds nock off branches, or even a tree without strong roots, falling "accidentally" some stories below will not be payday for the designer, but then again I am sure those hiccups have been figured out.

On the good side I see these features:
Birds chirpling out in my balcony, heck even nesting
A sense of love for nature
Extra shade for my afternoon cup of tea

I like the idea, I'm not sure about the outcome though, only time will tell.

I think we need two years more to have an idea of the final result.
Here the spring has come and some trees are already blossoming on the skyscraper.
