From Thursday onwards there is someone closely watching your movement at Chennai central railway station 24/7. Taking the security of the passenger to the next level Southern Railway launched its very first Integrated Security System(ISS) at Chennai Central and Egmore.

It will also be installed in other major stations like Thiruvananthapuram Central, Ernakumal Junction, Madhurai Junction, Coimbatore Junction, Kozhikode, Mangalore also in suburban stations like Mambalam, Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Basin Bridge and Thiruvallur.

Southern Railway installs security systems in major stations

Quote:
A high-tech surveillance system has been set up at Chennai Central and Egmore stations to help security personnel monitor railway stations round-the-clock. This is part of an Integrated Security System (ISS) with CCTV Surveillance System planned at 14 major stations in Southern Railway at a cost of Rs 41.60 crore.

With cameras all around, security personnel can now view every nook and corner of the station premises from a central control room to ensure safety of the passengers and their belongings.

The new system is being commissioned presently at nine major stations - Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Thiruvanathapuram Central, Ernakulam Junction, Madurai Junction, Coimbatore Junction, Tiruchchirappalli Junction, Kozhikode and Mangalore. The system will also be installed at five suburban stations of Chennai Beach, Mambalam, Tambaram, Basin Bridge Junction and Tiruvallur.

A.K. Mittal, General Manager, Southern Railway, today inaugurated the system for Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore at the Chennai Central Railway station.

Security of railway passengers and their belongings is the prime concern of the Indian Railways.

Providing security to passengers has become a challenge for the Railways as there are increasing instances of anti-social activities, which affect passenger security and safety. To address this concern, Indian Railways has introduced many measures taking advantage of the available technologies. Providing a surveillance system in the station premises is an effort to enhance passenger security and safety, says a Southern Railway press release.

The system comprises a CCTV surveillance with Internet Protocol based-cameras (625 numbers.), under vehicle scanning system for 18 entries/exits at nine major stations, personal and X-ray baggage screening system (295) and an explosive detection and disposal system for bomb detection squads at all major stations.

The sub-systems will be integrated by networking and monitored at the centralised control rooms. The CCTV Surveillance Network System was commissioned at Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore stations.

The existing CCTV network of suburban platforms has also been integrated to this system.

Egmore to get renovated platform, overbridge

Quote:
Boarding a long distance or suburban train is going to be hassle-free at Egmore station, as authorities have started widening the narrow passages and improving other infrastructure. Commuters will no longer have to negotiate narrow overbridges to reach suburban platforms and long distance travellers will be able to board trains directly from the platform without using foot overbridges or escalators.

Southern Railway has begun works to set right two infrastructural drawbacks at the second largest station in the city - a narrow entry-exit pathway to a foot over bridge that leads to suburban platforms and repairs at the damaged platform number two. The works started after passengers flooded railways with complaints about the inconveniences while boarding express and suburban trains.

The narrow pathway to a foot overbridge which was built more than 100 years ago on the eastern end of the station has been demolished to make it wider, "We will provide a wider entrance to the foot over bridge from Gandhi Irwin Road. The majority of the work is over and we only need to remove the old structure and build steps. It will be ready in a month. This will make it easier for people to access suburban platforms and the second entrance of the station on Poonamallee High Road. Earlier, commuters used to suffer because the entrance to the foot over bridge was too narrow," said a senior railway official.

Platform two, which can be accessed without foot over bridges or escalators, is also being renovated after portions of it started to cave in a few months ago. Stone tiles have been dug up and new concrete slabs are being laid after strengthening the ground. "When this platform is ready, passengers will be at an advantage because we will be able to operate more trains which can be boarded without using foot overbridges," he said.

Further, more than 200 garbage bins have been installed at different platforms to prevent littering. "But the station is still dirty as passengers continue to litter. Travellers should have better civic sense," said another official.

Would have been so nice if we get the new BEML emu. Its design is like that of a Metro with stainless steel interiors.

Egmore Stations cleaning
Quote:
New agency undertakes cleaning of Egmore station

Machinery worth Rs. 6 lakh and 43-member team in charge of upkeep of platforms 7 to 11

After an earlier failed attempt at mechanising cleaning operations at Egmore station, Southern Railway has awarded the contract to another agency.

The new agency has been entrusted the upkeep of platforms 7 to 11 (zone II). The maintenance of platforms 1 to 6 (zone I) will be outsourced to an agency soon and operations launched in about two weeks, an official said.

Two years ago, a similar contract was awarded to a conservancy agency but cleaning operations faltered because often, fewer personnel and machines were deployed, he said.

Under the new contract awarded to Pandidurai Agency for a period of three years, a team of 43 workers will be responsible for maintenance of the five railway platforms.

Their tasks include rag-picking, maintaining the foot overbridges and approach roads to the station, and also the 500-metre stretches on each end of the platforms.

The cleaning operations will be carried out with the help of machines — vacuum cleaners, flipper mechanical floor cleaners, jet water cleaners and blower sweep machines — worth about Rs. 6 lakh. The operations will be supervised by railway health supervisors.

On Wednesday, a team led by Sulochana Rajani, chief medical superintendent, supervised the operations.

“We expect better results from the new agency. The work it has carried out at Tiruchi station is one of the factors we considered before awarding them the contract,” said Madan Mohan, additional medical superintendent, Chennai Divisional Railway.

Souther Railway’s medical department also renewed their contract with the same agency at Chennai Central though they have interchanged the zones of the contractors. The 14 platforms at Chennai Central have been divided into two zones for mechanised cleaning contracts.

The department also maintains the Chengalpattu, Arakkonam and Melvarathur stations under Chennai Divisional Railway while the upkeep of smaller stations comes under the ambit of the traffic wing.

There always has been some good initiative every now and then, but our people do not change within our country, hence the problem.

Awesome!! Really looked cool when both went parallel to each other..

How did the videographer get a chance to capture this? Wasn't Jaya present at Central for the inauguration ( Read in ToI that Central really got cleaned up and air fresheners n stuff were used..

She should start visiting more places in person)?
