Stansted Airport plans to land direct routes to China

Stansted Airport has revealed it is trying to secure a direct service to China as air links are being demanded by British business leaders. A spokesman told BBC Essex routes to China was an issue the airport "needs to focus on for future growth."

Long-haul flights to emerging countries will be examined by the Airports Commission as it looks at all London airports' capacity over the next year. Stansted serves 18 million passengers a year, but has capacity for 35 million.

Mark Souter, head of airline relations at Stansted, said: "I was recently at a routes development conference in the Middle East talking to prospective long-haul airlines - that really is our focus.

"There is a huge amount of growth with the Middle Eastern carriers in emerging markets like China, south-east Asia and Latin America. Given that we have a lot of capacity to play around with here, clearly that has to be an area we need to focus on for future growth and to satisfy our passengers.

"We don't have those [China] routes from Stansted at the moment and I'm keen to build relationships with those airlines."

The airport welcomed its first ever passenger flight from China in August. A specially chartered China Southern Airlines A330 carried more than 200 Chinese VIPs, performers and artists from Beijing for a cultural event as part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games celebrations.

Increased profits for Gatwick Airport

Gatwick Airport has announced increased half-yearly profits of £172m and a growth in passenger numbers. Profits increased by 4.8% over the same April to September period in 2011.

Gatwick was sold in 2009 after the Competition Commission ruled BAA must also sell Stansted and either Glasgow or Edinburgh airports. Stewart Wingate, Gatwick's chief executive, said: "Three years of competition has seen Gatwick grow its European short-haul business."

He added that the airport was also opening up new long-haul routes to Russian, China, Vietnam and Korea.

'Exploring second runway'

During the same six-month period, turnover was up by 3.6% to £325.8m and passenger numbers also increased by 1.2% to 19.9 million.

Mr Wingate said: "This proves passengers are best served by allowing airports to compete. It is why we recently announced our plans to explore second runway options as we believe growth at Gatwick is the best option for increasing connectivity for the next generation"

A legal agreement currently prevents a second runway being built at the West Sussex airport until 2019. In June, Gatwick announced plans to handle up to 40 million passengers a year by 2021, increasing to 45 million annually by 2030.

Mr Wingate said: "Over the next three years we will continue to transform the airport, maximising the opportunities in the short-haul market while stepping up our efforts to attract airlines that serve markets of strategic importance to the UK."

Gatwick said about 23,000 people were employed at the airport, with a further 13,000 jobs in related businesses in the South East.

Stansted Airport unveils the future of its transport links

STANSTED Airport has launched its rail vision which outlines new faster and reliable rail links that could help attract at least an extra 1.4 million passengers a year.

The vision was unveiled to 150 top transport leaders, local authorities, airport representatives and key stakeholders attending Stansted’s annual Transport Forum today (November 23). The vision’s goals include:

• A 30 minutes rail journey time from London to the airport – “Stansted in 30”

• Extending Crossrail to Stansted

• Long term vision for Stansted to be the best connected air-rail hub in the UK

• Improvements to services for our passengers and the local community

In his speech to delegates, managing director, Nick Barton, said: “We have the spare capacity and infrastructure in place to support 35 million passengers a year and with faster rail links we can attract the airlines whose passengers value quick and reliable links to London.

“That’s why we launched our new rail campaign – Stansted in 30 – to persuade Government and the rail industry to commit to reducing journey times from London to Stansted to around 30 minutes.

“Stansted is proud to be the leading major UK airport for public transport use, with now 50 per cent of passengers using train, bus and coach to travel to and from Stansted. But we want to build on this success, so that is why we also want to see more frequent trains to Cambridge, East Anglia and beyond opening up the airport to new communities. We believe there is a strong case to link the airport to high speed rail and support the proposals to extend Crossrail to Stansted.

Delta Air Lines Adds Third Daily Heathrow to Atlanta Flight

Delta Air Lines, a US-based airline, is expanding its daily service between Hartsfield Jackson International Airport, in Atlanta, US, and London Heathrow Airport in the UK.

The airline, which already flies two daily flights on the route, will be adding the additional flight from March 31, 2013.

The new service will also include access to in-flight Internet services for passengers. The airline will be installing Wi-Fi on its fleet of around 150 international aircraft, and claims to be the only airline offering online access on flights between the UK and the US.

Perry Cantarutti, the airline senior vice president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said, ‘In just five years, we will have gone from no Heathrow flights to nine daily non-stop services to five US cities. We are also responding to customer demand for more comfort and convenience and the roll-out of our in-flight Wi-Fi from the UK means business customers in particular can stay connected throughout their journey, or simply relax and enjoy a full flat-bed seat.’

The route between London and Atlanta is often used by British passengers to fly to connected destinations of Orlando, Tampa, Las Vegas, Jacksonville, Los Angeles and Miami, in the US.

The airline has also opened its 360° Lounge in London, located within the Millennium and Copthorne Hotel. The lounge will be used exclusively by the airline on Chelsea FC match days as part of its sponsorship of the club, and will be open to hotel guests and the public at other times. Delta is also the football club’s Official Airline Partner.

Cantarutti said, ‘This is our first commercial sponsorship of a Premier League side. London is now home-from-home for Delta and, thanks to our partnership with Chelsea FC, our brand is reaching thousands more customers every day.’

British Airways starts London-Seoul direct service

British Airways, earlier this week, started operating flights to Icheon International Airport in Seoul, South Korea. With this flight, British Airways has commenced its six-times-a-week non-stop services between London and Seoul.

The airline has returned to South Korea with this service after 14 years. The flight is operated by a Boeing 777-200ER aircraft.

“With the arrival of flight BA17 and our proud return to Korea; we celebrate a milestone in our commitment to increasing our presence in Asia,” Jamie Cassidy, Area General Manager, Middle East and Asia Pacific, British Airways, said after arriving on the flight. “The Republic of Korea is increasingly both a cultural and economic giant and a market with huge potential. We welcome this opportunity to strengthen trade and tourism between Korea and the United Kingdom,” Cassidy added.

British Airways is the only airline to offer premium economy seating on the Seoul-London route and is also the only member of the oneworld alliance to fly non-stop between the two cities. “We are delighted to be flying to Korea once again. No matter what their budget, British Airways has a lot to offer to customers in Korea looking for a premium travel experience with easy access to the rest of Europe,” said Vishal Sinha, Regional General Manager, Japan & Korea, British Airways.

So, with Delta taking a 49% share of Virgin, does anybody want to hazard a guess which terminal they will end up in at LHR?

T4 is probably not big enough to accommodate Virgin unless the non aligned airlines move out. Also, little chance of Virgin operating domestic flights from T4 without significant investment.
Does this deal scupper Heathrow's plan to get the three major alliances (more or less in the case of T3/T5) under one roof?

Aeromexico targets daily flights to Heathrow Airport

Aeromexico will become the first Latin American carrier to fly a Dreamliner into the UK when it introduces the aircraft on its new London Heathrow route next year.

The airline launched its three times a week flights from Mexico City to Heathrow on Saturday. The carrier has been trying to get a foothold at the UK's only hub airport for eight years and moved quickly when the opportunity arose earlier this year.

Aeromexico has also revealed that it aims to operate daily flights on the route, when more slots become available. The carrier has ordered 10 Dreamliners and plans to introduce the aircraft on the Heathrow route next August.

Rocio Blazquez Reyes, VIP Sales Europe and Asia, told Routes News: "It is very hard to obtain slots but our intention as a company is to extend the frequency to London. Our aim is to operate daily.

"We will also start operations with the Dreamliner in August this year. We will be the first Latin American company to operate this aircraft. The Heathrow route is a big challenge for us so we are putting all out efforts here."

Korean Air still has service to London from Heathrow.

Anyways it seems like Gatwick is becoming more and more orientated to budget and charter carriers while more mainline carriers are choosing to serve Heathrow.
