For example the Suica/Pasmo area of commerce and Toica area of commerce is divided by somewhere around Kanami station. So on the Tokaido line you cannot go from Tokyo to Nagoya with one swipe. |

The cards are not intended for intercity travel, but rather for travel within metropolitan areas (urban network). The interoperability is for the convenience of business travelers and tourists arriving by air, shinkansen, or perhaps highway bus.

I guess I would be the opposite then.
I, on the one hand, would purchase and collect all of the IC cards that are in use in Japan. I would probably have a huge booklet or carrying case where I can carry my "card collection" wherever I go in Japan. So I'm guess there are like 20+ of these cards out there (not yet including 7-ELEVEN nanaco, Waon, Edy and I think that taspo card........for cigarette smokers) |

Hiroshima Electric Railway investigates potential for articulated buses on Seifū Shinto routes
http://www.chugoku-np.co.jp/News/Tn201212120039.html Quote:
Apparently, the buses are too big to use the Hiroshima Bus Center, which like many of Japan’s central-city bus terminals, is multi-storied, requiring buses to negotiate a series of narrow ramps from street level to actually access the terminal platforms. As a result, separate stops for the articulated buses would need to be secured. For the bus fans, ten unabridged minutes at Hiroshima Bus Center (2012.03.19). A pretty impressive operation with lots of activity, and all manner of buses. ![]()

Hankyū considers name change for Sannomiya Station
http://sankei.jp.msn.com/economy/new...3000004-n1.htm Quote:
For English users, the biggest problem is that the city’s main station has an un-intuitive name, referring specifically to the neighborhood around the station. Ironically, the three primary railways serving Sannomiya (JR, Hankyū, and Hanshin) also have a somewhat similar situation at their Ōsaka terminals, with both Hankyū and Hanshin using the name “Umeda”, the name of the neighborhood around the terminal… This is somewhat offset by JR’s use of “Ōsaka”, though, so the situation at Sannomiya is actually worse, as all three railways there use “Sannomiya”. The other big problem (and contributing factor) is that there already are several stations in Kōbe called “Kōbe Station”, concentrated in the port area around Motomachi that has been traditionally known as “Kōbe”. This is probably the main reason that “Sannomiya” remains in use. In particular, JR has a “Kōbe Station”, roughly co-located with Harborland Station on the Kōbe Municipal Subway Kaigan Line, and there is also a “Kōsoku Kōbe Station” located about 150 m to 200 m away, connected to these two stations by underground passage. The latter is on the Kōbe Rapid Railway and used by both Hankyū and Hanshin trains. These issues are further complicated by the multiple stakeholder railways, making it difficult for any single railway to make meaningful change and potentially making it impossible to devise a solution that appeals to every railway. The issues in Japanese are similar, but there are other complicating factors, such as spelling: JR uses 三ノ宮, but Hankyū and Hanshin use 三宮, both pronounced and transliterated as “Sannomiya”. The Kōbe Municipal Subway Kaigan Line, which has a station in close proximity, uses the latter spelling (三宮・花時計前). The other problem in Japanese is that there are already a lot of stations named “神戸駅” across various parts of the country, although the pronunciations vary substantially due to local dialects and the complexity of the Japanese language: 神戸駅 (Gōdo Station) in Gunma Prefecture (Watarase Keikoku Railway) 神戸駅 (Kanbe Station) in Aichi Prefecture (Toyohashi Railroad) 伊賀神戸駅 (Iga Kanbe Station) in Mie Prefecture (Kintetsu) With all the stations in Japan, this type of situation arises quite frequently, and the most common approach to distinguishing the stations is simply to use a prefix based on the operator (e.g., 京急川崎 Keikyū Kawasaki or 京急富岡 Keikyū Tomioka) or on the historical name of the local province, such as Iga Kanbe above, 武蔵五日市 Musashi Itsukaichi, 安房鴨川 Awa Kamogawa, etc.), although there is no strict rule to do this. In this situation, I think the most likely option for Hankyū is simply to go with “Kōbe Sannomiya”. Given that Hankyū and Hanshin are basically under one company now, it’s likely Hanshin will follow, although I’m not sure JR would do anything in response.

Work to begin next fiscal year on Meitetsu Gifu – Ginan continuous grade-separation
http://www.gifu-np.co.jp/news/kennai...52_18833.shtml Quote:
This project has been in limbo since first proposed in the 1970s… The national government shortlisted the project for advancement as early as 1999, but it’s gotten nowhere since then due to delays in land acquisition and Gifu Prefecture’s financial difficulties. Breaking the project into two phases now will help get the ball rolling. Total project cost for the entire 2.9 km segment is over ¥50 billion, but the first phase will cut that financial burden in half for the time being. The funding arrangement is also a little bit unusual, with the national government absorbing 51% of the cost, Meitetsu 7%, and the prefectural and local governments each taking half of the remainder. Groundbreaking is still a few years away, as they will only begin detailed field surveys and conceptual design starting next fiscal year. The project will eliminate twelve crossings (all of them開かずの踏切,staying closed for more than 40 minutes of the peak hour) and consolidate two existing stations (Kanō and Chajo) into a single station.

Akita City forecasts ridership for new station on Ōu Main Line
http://www.sakigake.jp/p/akita/news.jsp?kc=20121215d Quote:
On 2012.12.14, Akita City released the results of its ridership projections, which estimated approximately 625 to 921 daily boardings assuming construction of only a station building and bicycle parking and approximately 960 to 1,355 daily boardings assuming construction of an additional bus stop directly outside the station. This would put the new station in roughly the same league as Araya Station (952 daily boardings in FY2011), greater than Ugo Ushijima (677 boardings) but less than Tsuchizaki (2,229 boardings). The new station would also reduce travel times to central Akita for local residents by approx. 15 minutes compared to existing fixed-route bus services, but would increase one-way travel times for passengers north of Tsuchizaki by about two minutes.

With growing demand in waterfront industrial zones, Kawasaki City looks to improve bus services
http://news.kanaloco.jp/localnews/article/1212130010/ Quote:
Bus services to the part of the city consist of both publicly-operated (Kawasaki City municipal buses) and privately-operated (Keikyū Bus, etc.), and the city is hoping to involve the private bus operators in expanding service to these areas. In particular, the city is looking to transfer its current responsibilities on some routes jointly operated with private operators entirely to the private sector so that it can focus its publicly-operated services in the Higashi-Ōgishima area.

Saitama Prefecture stations work to attract new customers
http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXNZO...2A211C1L72000/ Quote:
However, there’s been other movements in other parts of Saitama Prefecture as well, with JR East scheduled to open a new Atre-branded station retail facility underneath the new viaduct taking shape at Urawa Station as part of the elevation of the Utsunomiya Line / Takasaki Line and Keihin–Tōhoku Line and construction of new platforms at the station to allow Shōnan–Shinjuku Line trains to stop at the station, shifting some of the transfer load currently at Akabane Station. A six-story station tenant building will also be built on the site of the former station building at the station’s West Exit. In addition, Tōbu Railway broke ground on improvements at Iwatsuki Station on the Noda Line in October, including construction of a new elevated concourse and platform bridge and a new West Exit (currently, the station only has an East Exit). Work is scheduled to be completed in 2015, and Saitama City is working on urban planning efforts for the area around the station, increasing tourism and daytime population to help bolster the proposed extension of the Saitama Rapid Railway Line north from Urawa Misono.

quashlo, I don't know if this has been asked before, but do you really scourer Japanese news sites and blogs for all your information or is there another Japanese site or blog out there that daily compiles train-related new? If you do the former, that's a heck of a lot of work you. I mention this not only because I'm grateful for the effort you put into this thread but your links have introduced sites to me that I otherwise would never have known about.

I used to go to all the newspaper sites, but nowadays, it's much simpler to just use Google News Japan. I supplement this with occasionally checking railway operator websites (JR East, Tōkyō Metro, etc.) and a few blogs or other sites specializing in railway-related content:
http://rail.hobidas.com/blog/natori/ http://saitoshika.blog119.fc2.com/ http://okiraku-goraku.com/ http://denshawotorou.blog73.fc2.com/ http://railf.jp/news/ and a few others, plus YouTube.
