Do you think the average motorist really cares whether the number is out of order? Do they care if I-68 is south of I-62?
It makes more sense when short numbers are for major routes and longer numbers are for shorter, less important routes.

I'm sure 99 percent of them don't even notice. I-99 doesn't bother me at all. But some roadgeeks get as worked up about 99 as they do about 97 and 238.

To make this on-topic, I submit that I-35 through Kansas is the best US Freeway I've ever driven. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=kansas...,66.97,,0,2.56 It should be held up as an example for all US freeways. Discuss. |

So Kansas City is already the metro with the most freeway miles per capita in the world, so they are planing a new interstate outer loop....

That is also about the only part of the Kansas City metropolitan area with significant population growth.

![]() There were plans to extend the route designation along US 50 to the Capital Beltway (per dcroads.net), as well as use of the route as DC's outer beltway, but obviously those got scrapped.

There was no uproar when Birmingham's Northern Beltline got the I-422 designation. Even though it doesnt begin or end at I-22. Speaking of this ever delayed project, I have serious doubts this ever gets built. |

Several even 3dis connect somewhere else on either end. As long as they intersect with the parent, no one says much. I-422 is certainly a better implementation than the x78s in NYC which never touch I-78 (though at least one was supposed to)... and where is I-38 again?

Was 678 always planned to have its southern terminus at JFK? If so, it would have crossed 78 if 78 had been built as planned. The 1961 Rand McNally road atlas I have somewhere at my mother's house shows the proposed 78 crossing...well, as briefly as possible, running from the Williamsburg Bridge southeast to the airport, then looping up through southeastern Queens and taking what is now 295 (or 295 then 695; I'm not sure) up to 95 in the east Bronx. What I don't remember is if 678 had its southern terminus in the area of the later Shea Stadium or ran down the Van Wyck as it now does. But even if it didn't run south, it would have met (still does...) 278 at Bruckner Interchange, so that's something. Sorry if I've lost everyone.... EDIT. Now that I think of it, the unbuilt parts of 78 weren't dropped until about 1973, so for a while what is now 295 (or 295 and 695), including the Throgs Neck Bridge, was open and designated I-78, at least on maps. Not sure if it was signed as such. |

Interstate 49 in Missouri
The Interstate Highway System grows by 180 miles today, because US 71 in Missouri is officially renumbered to I-49 between the Arkansas state line and Kansas City.
map of the Missouri Interstate Highway system with I-49:

New section of interstate open
(Chris beat me to it, but I'll post it anyways)
Ongoing needed upgrades to US 71 in Missouri, USA, running from I-435/470 in Kansas City, MO southwards to Pineville, MO (just north of the Arkansas state line), about 290 km, are complete and the highway is now I-49. http://www.nevadadailymail.com/story/1921387.html http://modot.org/southwest/major_pro...Conversion.htm Location: http://goo.gl/maps/WLb69 ![]() Mike |
