NYC ever get an indoor stadium?

Probably doesn't deserve it's own thread, but what do you think. Is there a need for an 75k-85 stadium in NYC? Preferably indoors.

No need for one - and where would it go?

New York sports teams all got new stadiums within the past 5 years. Aside from MLS pulling something out of it's @ss, there's no chance for decades.

Will be a bit hard to build in that location now - since the groundbreaking for this was yesterday

No. The only way this ever happens is if St. Johns brings back a football program and it's as popular as at the major state schools. Teams in the Big East generally don't require such large stadiums though. The highest average attendance in the conference is less than 60k and that's at West Virginia.

Seems as though old Cooper Stadium in Columbus is getting a massive makeover as part of a future NASCAR project...

Well, sort of. The massive makeover part is correct but its not really a NASCAR project. Basically its going to have a half mile race/test track and definitely will not be large enough for NASCAR races. Its going to also have an automotive research facility thats going to partner with ohio state, columbus state, clean fuels ohio,Tech Columbus, and a bunch of other research firms to test new technologies etc.. The pavilion and track area is going to be able to host different types of races as well as concerts, x games, etc.

Midwestern Auto Group (MAG) which is a large luxury car dealer in Columbus (Lamborghini, Maserati, Ferrari, Porsche, etc..) is going to have a showroom on the complex and will host different rallys for specific car clubs. Michael Waltrip is the NASCAR tie to the complex so far. It was just announced that Waltrip will have a team headquarters at the complex and will test team cars there. Jeff Gordon has investment in the project as well along with a Columbus development firm. Overall, its an interesting project.

Heres a link with a pretty good video if anyone is interested.http://www.sparcohio.com/

Considering NASCAR is running a truck race at Eldora next year it's a brave new world for what is and isn't a NASCAR track anymore. Though looking at their plan I'd say a NASCAR race there is highly unlikely.

Yeah, this would probably be local-level stuff. When I said Nascar, I was thinking that they were involved in the development of it, didn't read the article close enough.

Well technically NASCAR doesn't own tracks. However the family that owns NASCAR also owns International Speedway Corp.

Kingdome dugouts for sale

Several months ago a private collector who had purchased the 2 Kingdome dugouts from the city of Seattle put them up for sale on ebay. Looks like there are still 5 sections available.

NFL: Detroit Lions $118M, the next 17 teams between $112M-118M. Jacksonville is the lowest at $91M. This is the definition of parity.
The Braves, Cardinals, Orioles, Nationals, and Athletics all advanced to the playoffs. All those teams were in the bottom half of team payrolls. Of the teams with top 5 payrolls, only the Yankees and Tigers advanced to the postseason. MLB has more parity without a cap than you think. I stated earlier that since 1990, 13 teams have won the World Series. During that time, just 8 teams have won the NBA Finals.

It's worse than that. Nine teams have won the NBA Championship since 1980, the 76ers and Mavs are the only non repeat franchise.

Comparing payroll disparities in a hard salary cap league that has the most generous revenue sharing program in North American sports, to a league with no hard salary cap, and has comparatively little to no revenue sharing is apples and oranges. Those types of payroll difference or lack thereof, is exactly what you would expect.

There's a big difference between payroll parity, and on field parity. MLB has the largest payroll disparities because of the physical way the league is structured, and given the way the NFL is structured it will naturally have the smallest amount of difference in total team payrolls. On field parity in MLB is probably up there with the NFL, whereas the NBA is easily the worst of the three in terms of on court parity, but the NBA falls somewhere in between the NFL and MLB in terms of the difference in the higher spending teams, and the lower spending teams.

Yeah, but the NBA didn't get a salary cap until 1984, so you can't count the 76ers. That said, there's more competitive balance in MLB than the NBA with its salary cap.

The key to parity is what makes teams in each sport win. In baseball, a good pitching rotation is usually what wins. Teams have farm systems and they can develop a nice rotation of young pitchers and add a free agent or two and trade some prospects. If there was no farm system, teams like the Yankees would dominate. In basketball, the key is generally a couple of superstars, some rebounding and good defenders. Mostly though, its superstars. These are at a premium. The NBA is very trendy as well. Players want to play for LA, NY, Boston, Miami or Chicago, so this is where the superstars generally end up when they are free agents. Outside of a franchise doing an outstanding job of developing a team(San Antonio, Dallas, Detroit, OKC) you rarely see anyone else challenge. The NFL as a league, underpays its roster, and there are no real glamour teams that players MUST play for. Plus, some of the better teams from the past come from cities of all kind, so you don't see players lining up to play for one team or the other. The key to winning in the NFL is quarterback and line play. Quarterbacks are hard to find, but quality lineman aren't as hard to find. Far less individually dominated.
