Auckland has maintained its position as the world’s third most liveable city in the 2012 Mercer Quality of Living survey, and is the highest ranked city in the Asia-Pacific region. Auckland is the only city in the Southern Hemisphere that features in the top 10 across all three major international quality of life surveys: Mercer (3rd), Monocle magazine (9th) and the Economist Intelligence Unit (10th), ranked on factors such as culture and environment, political stability, safety, infrastructure and ease of doing business. Mercer ranks Auckland third behind Vienna and Zurich. The highest ranking Asia-Pacific cities after Auckland are Sydney at 10, Wellington at 13, Melbourne at 17 and Perth at 21. While Auckland sits third overall, it only manages 43rd position when it comes to infrastructure. “I’m pleased to see that Auckland has maintained its place in the Mercer survey,” says Len Brown. “We know there is still a lot of work to be done. Our transport infrastructure puts us behind other cities on the international indices, and handicaps our people and our economy. “But we are working hard to give Auckland a fully-integrated transport system, and steps like rail electrification and next year’s arrival of our first of our new electric trains, protecting and designating the route for the City Rail Link, and our integrated ticketing system roll-out will make a significant positive impact.” The international results complement the annual Auckland Scorecard, introduced by the Mayor in 2011 to enable Auckland to gauge its performance across a range of measures including employment, education, the local economy and transport . The second annual scorecard, released last month, has revealed Auckland is making solid progress towards becoming the world’s most liveable city. “Auckland’s consistent high ranking in the three major international liveability surveys shows the world sees us as a great place to live, work, visit and do business. The Auckland Scorecard is tailored to measure factors important to Aucklanders and to achieving our future goals, to give a balanced domestic view to the international one,” says the Mayor. “Our performance across all these shows that we are well on track to becoming the world’s most liveable city, a place where all Aucklanders can enjoy a good quality of life, where there are good business and employment opportunities, where people have real choices in housing, transport and employment.” “A key thing that cities topping the lists have in common is that they have formulated robust plans for their future social, physical and economic development, and are fully committing to delivering them. “The success of this approach is clear, and Auckland is well now positioned with our Auckland Plan 30-year blueprint, the Economic Development Strategy, the Housing Strategic Action Plan and now progressing the Unitary Plan, the single rulebook replacing former district and regional plans.”

New Zealand's reputation for clean government continues to sparkle, as the country again comes out best in Transparency International's global corruption perceptions index. It is the seventh year in a row that New Zealand, either on its own or tied with some Nordic countries or Singapore, has topped the index for having the lowest perceived levels of public sector corruption. In the 2012 report, released today, this country is first equal with Denmark and Finland. The winners were helped by strong access to information systems and rules governing the behaviour of people in public positions, Transparency International said. This year's index used an updated methodology that provided greater clarity on how the index was constructed, making it easier to trace how data was rescaled for inclusion. For the future, local chapter Transparency International New Zealand (TINZ) recently launched a so-called national integrity system assessment to provide a more nuanced and detailed report on this country's vulnerability to corruption. The assessment would provide the most detailed information yet about the factors which caused New Zealand to consistently rank at the top, TINZ chair Suzanne Snively said ... MORE

Peaceful, but not as peaceful as Iceland. New Zealand has been ranked second most peaceful country in the world in the 2012 Global Peace Index, equal with Denmark, but pipped by Iceland. New Zealand was judged the most peaceful country in 2010, but was overtaken last year by the plucky Icelanders. Given the state of their economy, let’s not begrudge them this. Published last week, the Index – which seems to have escaped notice by NZ media – places Somalia at rock bottom. Rounding out the least-peaceful five are Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq the and Democratic Republic of Congo. The five biggest fallers in the index are Syria (down by more than 30 places, which will surprise nobody), Egypt, Tunisia, Oman and Malawi. The biggest movers in the other direction are Sri Lanka (which goes up almost 30 places), Zimbabwe, Bhutan, Guyana and the Philippines. The most improved region is Asia-Pacific. The United States comes in midtable at 88. China is 89.

Our main street Christmas lighting has changed this year and is more becoming of a new World City. I am also very grateful that we don't have those light bulb, flickering lights stretched out across the street in the formation of words / pictures. I hope that you like these ...

More than 1000 recyclable lights lining Queen St have been switched on after months of work by the local designers. Angus Muir and the team at Auckland company Fresh Concept began working on the design of the light display that runs from The Civic Theatre to Britomart since July. The result is about 1000 pentagon-shaped lights covering 22 street lights and forming three banners across Queen St, which were officially switched on last night. The brief from organisers was to create something urban, while bringing an international Christmas feel to Auckland's main street. "We wanted to come up with something that was accessible to everyone, that wasn't specific to a race or religion. We think we've created that. Something that's Christmasy but contemporary as well," said Muir. The custom-designed and built pentagons form star shapes that are red, god and white during the day, while at night they light up in synchronised displays of light and colour. Each pentagon has been moulded from high impact styrene and inside each one is a low energy consumption LED light source that can glow across a wide spectrum of colours. Muir said the whole display uses the equivalent of about 20 light bulbs in power and it was designed and built in New Zealand from recyclable materials. "The power that it draws is really minimal, and that's a big thing we are into - environmentally friendly and sustainable projects." Muir was recently named one of the winners of the Philips Lighting competition at the Art in the Dark festival run in Western Park and is currently working on projects at Silo Park and Queens Wharf. The lights will be switched on each night in the lead up to Christmas. VIDEO

New Zealand has scored highly in an international survey of energy sustainability. The World Energy Council’s Energy Sustainability Index ranks countries on availability, security, affordability and quality of energy, and amount of energy from low-carbon and renewable sources. The Index shows most countries assessed are far from achieving sustainable energy systems, with many struggling with energy security, affordability and environmental impacts. The top ten ranked countries are Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Denmark, Japan, France and Austria. New Zealand, in 6th place, scores highly for renewable energy sources and for management of environmental impacts. BusinessNZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly says New Zealand’s high ranking is testament to the development of sound energy policies by successive New Zealand Governments over many years. “Affordable, secure, renewable energy sources are essential for our standard of living and for productive business which supports it. “Good energy policy is not easy to achieve – getting the right infrastructure built, accessing energy reserves and having robust systems for things like emissions trading can be complex, as New Zealanders know. “There is much room for improvement, however this ranking is a welcome acknowledgement of success in this important area,” Mr O’Reilly said.
