Text messaging is on the decline, even in the Philippines, the so-called texting capital of the world.

Gone are the days when SMS was the staple means of communication via mobile phone.

According to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in a report on 24 Oras, the decline in text messaging began in 2010.

NTC data show that around 500 million texts are sent daily, compared with around 2 billion on average previously.

With the increasing number of phones with internet and wireless connection capabilities, connecting to the Web seems to matter more and more compared to texting.

Web surfing promos by telecommunication companies, as well as various web communication applications also contribute to less texting.

As it is, the NTC said that, instead of SMS traffic, consumers now face slower internet access due to high demand.

Tsaka yung unlimited calls na service talagang malaki ang epekto sa text. Better cal than text.

PHL is world's 4th fastest growing mobile data user — Ericsson
Smart phones made up some 40 percent of all phones sold globally in the third quarter of 2012, according to Ericsson's latest Mobility Report.

The mobile tech company said that mobile subscriptions are expected to hit 6.6 billion by the end of 2012, and to top 9.3 billion by 2018 —excluding machine-to-machine (M2M) subscriptions.

In terms of new subscribers in the third quarter, the Philippines was the fourth largest contributor worldwide at 5 million new subscriptions, after Brazil (9 million) and Indonesia (7 million). But China topped the list with 40 million new subscriptions, accounting for 35 percent of the world total.

Smart wraps up ‘super-charged’ phase of development
MANILA, Philippines—Smart Communications has completed another phase of its continuing network modernization, ensuring improved service quality for subscribers across the country.
In a statement, Smart said its Chinese supplier Huawei, the world’s largest telecommunications components manufacturer, reported that it had successfully completed the 90-day post-modernization observation period of its “super-charged” mobile network.
Huawei is the network supplier of Smart for the Visayas and Mindanao, and the observation activity from July to September this year is part of Smart’s contract with the Chinese firm.
Huawei optimization engineers said that the Huawei-built network consistently exceeded the standards and requirements in all areas where the tests were conducted, Smart said.
“Huawei has fulfilled its end in helping Smart build the Philippines’ most advanced mobile network,” said Mar G. Tamayo of Smart Technology Services Division.
Using an industry-standard “Drive Test Tool,” a series of tests conducted during the observation period has reinforced the superiority of Smart’s mobile network across all key performance indices (KPIs).
“These KPIs are consistent with the standards set by local regulatory institutions, and consistent with global benchmark standards,” Tamayo said.
The criteria are also the same service quality benchmarks used by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) when conducting its own drive tests.
“With Huawei’s world-class equipment in place, the country is now ready to enter the next phase of development of the telecommunications industry,” Tamayo said.
The work Huawei did for Smart was part of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) group’s two-year, P67-billion network modernization program aimed at helping the company cope with growing demand.
Smart ended the third quarter of 2012 with over 68 million mobile subscribers, more than two thirds of all active SIMs in the country. The group’s total subscriber count includes customers of affiliate brands Talk ‘N Text and Sun Cellular.
PLDT reported a net income of P28.7 billion for the first nine months of 2012, lower by 6 percent year on year. The company expects to end the year with P37 billion in profit, down from last year’s P39 billion.

Globe eyes up to 70% of Bayan for $180 M
MANILA, Philippines - Ayala-owned Globe Telecom may end up owning as much as 70 percent of Lopez-controlled Bayan Telecommunications, industry sources said.

As planned, Globe will acquire $180 million worth of debt papers, held by Bayan’s IOU holders, which can later be converted into equity.

Globe will finance the payment by a combination of cash and shares of stocks.

Bayan sources told The STAR while the company is on the path to recovery, registering positive earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), its huge debt burden is constraining it from getting additional funds it needs for expansion.

Globe has said that by securing Bayan’s frequency on the 1,800-megahertz band, it can provide better quality services on text messaging, voice and mobile data services.

The band will also enable Globe to provide long-term evolution (LTE) service that will allow for much faster transmission of data.
Business ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1

Globe finance officer Albert de Larrazabal also explained that the partnership with Bayan will allow the two companies to remain competitive in the saturated telecommunications market.

Earlier this month, Globe has obtained internal approval to start tender offers for the purchase of up to 100 percent of Bayan’s outstanding debts as well as those of unit Radio Communications of the Philippine Inc. (RCPI) from creditors, which include Development Bank of the Philippines, United Coconut Planters Bank and Land Bank of the Philippines.

Bayan in the late 1990s rolled out its network funded mainly by debts when the peso-dollar exchange rate was still around 20-$1. Repaying the loans at the current exchange rate became too expensive so that in 2001, the company was forced to enter into a rehabilitation program.

For the longest time, the Lopezes held on to Bayan because of its synergies with other businesses like ABS-CBN. But with another unit SkyCable now offering cable Internet, the need for Bayan’s data services has become less.

The acquisition of Bayan will also allow Globe to expand its landline business, with Bayan having around 190,000 subscribers. Bayan’s broadband subscriber base stands at around 140,000 and is expected to double this year.

Bayan also owns a huge majority in the National Digital Transmission Network (NDTN).

The local telco industry has been in a state of consolidation, with Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) acquiring Digitel from the Gokongweis, and San Miguel Corp. (SMC) purchasing Liberty Telecom, Eastern Telecom and Bell Telecom.

anyone from Globe here?

Why is it that with Globe sim cards, a traveller like me cannot connect to the internet in any so called Hot Spot for Globe? I'd think most of my prepaid money for the sim went down the drain because of this infuriating inefficiency. Hot spot, my foot. I bought the sim card for my New iPad and had mocha at the Coffee Bean right smack in the centre of ATC under Globe Office's ass. Gee, the damn WiFi just kept circling around and around and couldnt pick up any signal. bwiset.

Philippines remains fastest-growing smartphone market in SEA, report says

MANILA, Philippines — With a stellar three-fold growth in smartphone volume sales in the past year, the Philippines retains its title as the fastest growing smartphone market in Southeast Asia, according to a report released by research firm GfK on Monday.

The Philippines likewise posted a massive jump in the share of smartphones in the overall mobile pie in just a year, GfK noted, with its share increasing from just 9 percent last year to 24 percent today.

The adoption of smartphones in the country outperformed neighbors Thailand and Vietnam, which has a relatively low 19 percent and 11 percent adoption rates, respectively.

In May, GfK reported that the Philippines boasted the highest growth rate in terms of smartphone adoption in the first five months of the year, thanks to affordable Android smartphones.

The Philippine trend followed marked growth in smartphone sales in all of Southeast Asia, posting a high 61-percent surge in volumes to total 29 million units sold in the last 12 months.

GfK findings point to a greatly increased smartphone consumer purchase rate by 78 percent across the seven countries, accounting for over 61 percent of the sector’s overall value in Southeast Asia.

Despite this, feature phones or entry-level phone — mobile phones that do not have a modern mobile operating system built-in — continue to take the lion’s share of the entire mobile market in the region, as customers bought another 10 million units during the period.

“Feature phones still reign as the more prevalent mobile phone type used by consumers in the region’s emerging markets,” said Gerard Tan, account director for digital technology at GfK Asia.

“However, smartphones adoption is escalating at a rapid pace with individual country’s growth rates reported in the range of 42 to 326 percent,” he added.

For example, in Indonesia, which currently has the largest smartphone market in the region, nearly four in every five mobile phones sold are still feature phones “due to their greater affordability,” the report noted.

Findings also showed that smartphone growth in the region is driven primarily by the more affordable devices priced in the range of $100 to $200, which is currently dominating the market.

Dominated by a low-income group of mobile users, the Philippines has been an ideal country for launching affordable smartphones, such as those from Samsung and local brands such as Cherry Mobile and MyPhone, with Android-based phone models retailing below P5,000 levels.

Moreover, with mobile vendors signifying interest to manufacture more low-end smartphone models, GfK’s Tan said the industry could only expect feature phone owners migrating to smartphones anytime soon.

“The device will be within the reach of an even larger pool of consumers and the market expected to grow even faster when these models are made widely available,” Tan said. “We expect to see continued robust growth for at least the next two years.”

20 years on, SMS remains king in the ‘texting capital of the world’
MANILA, Philippines — It’s been two full decades since the first text message in the world was sent out to a Vodafone executive, but what most Filipinos have come to know and own as its national means of communication, so to speak, remains relevant in a world slowly dominated by newer technology.
According to a report by The Guardian in UK, the first short message service (SMS) was sent out by Neil Papworth, a software programmer and part of the team that developed the Short Messaging Service Center at Vodafone in Newbury, Berkshire, in England.

The first ever text message? “Merry Christmas,” sent out by Papworth on December 3 back in 1992.

Twenty years on, SMS remains to be the preferred medium of Pinoys in sending out greetings especially during the holiday season, even as other methods such as posting status via social media or seeing relatives face to face via Voice over Internet Protocol services emerge as possible alternatives.

According to a 2009 report, Pinoys send an average of 600 text messages per month, or about 40 percent more than their US counterparts. Smartphone adoption has been on the rise in the country, but studies have noted that SMS remains to be the top activity performed using these high-powered phones.

It’s no wonder therefore that we earned — and still own — the distinction as the “texting capital of the world.”

The country’s major telecommunications companies have reported a resurgence in the volume of text messages sent over their networks last year, with the PLDT Group (which includes the Smart, Talk ‘N Text, and Sun Cellular brands) reporting a massive 256.31 billion SMS sent in June 2011 alone, while rival Globe Telecom recorded as much as 19.2 billion text messages sent in a month last year.

During the Christmas holidays last year, both Smart and Globe have also reported a spike in SMS activity, with Globe recording an average of 13 percent increase in text volumes during the holidays, which is when SMS volume traditionally peaks.

The telcos attributed the spike in volumes to unlimited and bucket offerings — where service providers offer bundled text and call products that pack more SMS numbers than their usual cost — which now provide majority of their SMS-based revenues.

Still, the specter of other technologies such as social media looms in the distance to easily take over SMS, as these new methods provide a richer and more interactive form of communication than the limited 160 characters provided by text messages.

In this front, the Philippines once again earns its badge as the “social networking capital of the world,” with almost 100 percent penetration among Internet users in social networking sites such as Facebook.

Nevertheless, the more than 70 million Filipinos who own a mobile phone still prefer to be “kitikitext,” suggesting that SMS may have some more years — or even decades — to it than what was previously thought.

“Yes, we will carry the iPhone 5. In fact, we have [put up] a Web site for reservations,” Yolanda C. Crisanto, Globe’s vice-president for Corporate Communications, said in a telephone interview yesterday.

Ms. Crisanto declined to give details, saying Globe’s agreement with Apple is bound by confidentiality clauses.

“We will come up with a statement and additional details soon,” she said.

Smart Spokesperson Ramon S. Isberto, in a text message, said: “You can now reserve online. Pre-order starting Dec. 7 at Smart stores. The iPhone is available by Dec. 14.”

Yep, and it is cheaper already! In the case of Globe you can get a 16GB iPhone 5 at Plan 999 with P800 cashout monthly for 24 months (so it's almost like free at Plan 1799) . For Smart it is free at iPhone Plan 2499, 24 months lock-in period as well.

Won't upgrade yet until my lock-in for Platinum expires in February - then I downgrade the plan unless I want the 64GB version.

Globe Telecom launches commercial LTE handset

Globe Telecom has just launched the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE in the Philippines, running on the company's fourth-generation LTE network.

The Huawei Ascend P1 LTE, touted as the first commercially available LTE handset in the country is available for free under Globe's UnliSurf 1799 plan, or on installment at P500 for 24 months on UnliSurf 999. Alternatively, a prepaid kit is available for P21,000.

“Subscribers can now purchase the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE under our unlimited data plans and experience mobile browsing speeds of up to 100 Mbps, on-time exchange of text messages, as well as clearer calls and faster call connections,” said Globe Postpaid head, Martha Sazon.

The Huawei Ascend P1 LTE features a 1.5GH Dual Core processor, 1GB RAM, a 4.3in Super AMOLED Capacitive Multi-Touch Screen, 8 megapixel camera, WiFi, and BlueTooth. The device runs Android ICS.

Globe also said it will be offering other LTE smartphones, including the Samsung Galaxy S III LTE and ZTE T81.

Since September, the Globe 4G LTE network has expanded in key commercial and residential areas in Makati. By yearend, the Globe 4G LTE network is expected to be deployed over a wider area in NCR, as well as in Cebu and Davao.

LTE technology is claimed to be faster than current HSPA and HSPA+ technology, with peak speeds of up to 60 Mbps for outdoor coverage and 30 Mbps indoors.

Instead of “pocket activations” or “hotspots”, Globe's 4G LTE network rollout will emphasize large contiguous areas for more stable coverage.

“The speed of our LTE network is at least 10x faster than existing 2G and 3G networks, giving quicker responses to every user application such as video and mobile gaming. We have better outdoor coverage using advanced antenna solutions,” said Robert Tan, Globe's Chief Technology Adviser.

PLDT subscriber base seen exceeding 70 M this year

By Lawrence Agcaoili (The Philippine Star) | Updated December 17, 2012 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines - Dominant carrier Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) sees its subscriber base exceeding 70 million this year on the back of the continued shift to postpaid plans by existing customers.

PLDT president and chief executive officer Napoleon Nazareno said in an interview with reporters that “in terms of the subscriber base, right now we will end up with over 70 million by the end of the year,”.
