1952 to 1971

The language movement was initially led by the students. After the killings the political parties and the intellectual joined the movement. The Bengali language movement ultimately led to the fights for self rule and later resulted in the Liberation War in 1971. And Bangladesh was born, at the price of 3 millions lives in only 9 months.

When I read such statements, it sort of reminds me of a bob Dylan song "blowing in the wind"... there is a line in the song "how many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died?"..... so there is your answer brother.... no he/she is not sure abt the 3 million but neither can u be sure that the statement is false, there was mass murders and rapes and no one kept count....

Well in this case i am sure julia wasnt making a political stunt by trying to convince u that 3 million people died.So theres no need to bring politics into this

not just julia most people use this figure for political reason, as herewego said one such death is always one too many!

and then again the term war of liberation kinda doesnt make sense when you look at the broader prospective the indian province of bengal was one of the leading players in the creation of the muslim league it was one of the only two provinces where the muslim league was in power, the other being sindh, if bengalis had such a phenomenal role in the creation of pak, why should it be a war of liberation it should be the war of separation!

This is not surprising when one considers rapid urbanization factors prevalent in most growing Asian countries. However the rate of urbanization is still lower than countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan. This means that agricultural jobs still constitute a healthy portion of the economy compared to other countries where such opportunity simply does not exist.

The growing disparity in income between urban rich and rural poor is one factor, however the government's failure to sufficiently decentralize administration and manufacturing jobs (akin to many Asian countries) is also a factor. Sorry for the OT post.

You guys might be interested to know, that in our high school history textbooks, we are taught that we treated East Pakistan unfairly, and denied them their rights, which is why our Eastern Wing decided to part ways with us. We had charts showing the amount of population vs investment the Government of Pakistan made in either wings, and of course the language issue and the fact that Mujib ur Rehman was denied the post he had rightfully won. We were taught about the discrimination the Western wing exhibited.

But we do not agree with the ridiculous number of 3 million dead in 9 months.

Here is the BD relevant portion of the 2013 Pakistan Studies syllabus:

And I may have posted this in this section before: My grandfather was a Pakistan Army officer in East Pakistan at the time the 1971 war broke out. However, when all was lost, he took my fathers family out of BD and came back home. Lucky for them!

That syllabus only proves that Bangladesh is a part of the syllabus, it does not mention what exactly is being taught....

Also, you dont have to believe in 3 million, I think your own independent report suggest killing more than 50 thousand innocent men and women, and the rape incidents are also enormous. So I guess now you can go back and be proud of your Army, they afterall havent killed and raped millions... it is just a few hundred thousands....

I told you what they taught us. I guess you don't want to believe me. Our textbooks mention the heavy handedness of the Pakistani Army in the Eastern Wing, but don't give any casualty figures. Nor is the word rape mentioned in connection with the army operation there. But the discriminatory attitude of civilians and soldiers from the West towards the East is definitely taught.

And also, everyone in Pakistan acknowledges that it was as a result of our own attitude and policies that the people of the East rightfully called for succession. A few months ago some TV anchor asked kids at a school about Bangladesh and all of them said we didn't treat them well so they decided to seek independence. No Pakistani views what happened in 1971 with any pride, but it is not an event we remember now beyond the history classrooms.

The Pakistan Army killed several thousand Urdu speakers in Karachi in 1992. It was a brutal operation. Two Generals of the Pakistani Army were real a**h****. Yahaya and Nawaz. These men should have been punished for what they did. But their actions do not represent the rest of our huge military, whose commanders change every 3 years on average.
