Can a person own land in Israel?

Or is it rented from the gov?
and is there much rural land?
Can small farmers still make a living?

The Israeli government holds about 70-80% of the land in Israel. The rest is either owned by people who purchased lands prior to the country's establishment in 1948 or sold after via the Israel Land Administration, which sells portions of the land to regional entrepreneurs.

Right now there are a number of balances in place that allow small farmers and dairies to make a profit, but the recent committees that examined the cost of living recommended that this be eliminated, so in the near future many small farmers may go out of business. In general, farming is not a lucrative profession. Having said that, agriculture in the country is very well-developed, with cutting-edge technology and constant innovation. It might not be lucrative, but it's not boring.
