Untill 2012 Nov 1st, the official language of all government was English, not Malayalam..... Kerala, being not nationalistic in nature, didn't invest so much on promotion of Malayalam as state language and language of govt.

In 2000, Nayanar govt introduced Malayalam in form certain govt areas, like KSEB, Water authority etc for billing etc.... He also made Malayalam a compulsory second language in schools, untill 8th standard, though many CBSE schools made it as a Third language as per CBSE norms.....

Now, just a month back, Kerala Govt declared as Malayalam as official language of the state.... They are in process of making all govt correspondences in Malayalam......

Just a small example, untill recently the govt calenders never featured Malayalam Numerals. This time, I am seeing the use of Malayalam Numerals for first time...

Kerala govt has Malayalam Mission, which supports private ventures like Malayalee associations outside Kerala, to teach young generation Malayalam. They have made special literature and curriculum for such programs. Likewise now Malayalam University has started to do several research oriented programs in Malayalam

Late RR Varma (former Chairman of Aspinwall) was planning to make into a heritage museum. It was his original plan, to shift the HQ of Aspinwall out of Aspinwall House to Edappally, while using such massive project into a heritage museum.

His unexpected death (car accident), brought the entire change of plans.... For current MD, it seems Aspinwall House is more burden than a heritage property.....

Its not easy for a takeover, as this property values crores.... Other than business houses, no NGOs can simply pay and take over.... Travancore Royal house consists for only very few members and owned under JSC like Aspinwall.... They have no urgency to sell their palaces and make some money to share, unlike Kochi Royal House, which sells its palaces and make shares within such huge family, which they have done for Tankshed Palace, right in heart of Ernakulam at DH.......

Has speaking Hindi spread owing to influx of non-keralite workers, particularly north and east workers?

Not at all....Actually majority of them are not proper Hindi Migrants, rather Bengali.... Their immigration wave started towards start of 2000, when majority of Tamil immigration into Kerala stopped.....

Prior to this itself, Kerala didn't care much on promotion of Malayalam..... The state never highlighted itself too much on language chavunaism.... You don't have that even today....

In a state, that has attained almost cent percentage literacy (ability to read and write in own language), language has never became an emotional issue...... If you travel around Kerala, you find, 90% of private signages are in English Only.

Now a days, a revival is happening, thanks to multiple agencies, where promotion of native culture and language happening.....

മറൈന്*ഡ്രൈവില്* വടക്കു ഭാഗത്തെ പുതിയ വാക്ക്വേ ജനുവരിയില്* ഉദ്ഘാടനം ചെയ്യും. കൊച്ചിയുടെ സൌന്ദര്യവത്ക്കരണത്തിനു മുതല്*ക്കൂട്ടാകുമിത്. ഒന്നര കിലോമീറ്റര്* ദൈര്*ഘ്യമുള്ള വാക്ക്വേയുടെ നിര്*മാണം മിക്കവാറും പൂര്*ത്തിയായി.

വാക്ക്വേയില്* ഈ ഭാഗത്താണു കെട്ടുവള്ളം പാലം പണിയുന്നത്. പാലത്തിന്റെ ഇരുഭാഗത്തും റസ്റോറന്റുകളും വാക്ക്വേയില്* ലഘുഭക്ഷണശാലകളും ഉണ്ടാകും.

കഴിഞ്ഞ ഏപ്രിലിലാണ് പാലത്തിന്റെ നിര്*മാണം ആരംഭിച്ചത്. 700 മീറ്റര്* നീളവും 15 മീറ്റര്* വീതിയുമുള്ള പാലം ഹൈക്കോടതിയുടെ കിന്*കോ ജെട്ടിക്കു സമീപമാണ് പണിയുന്നത്. ഏഴര കോടി രൂപയാണു നിര്*മാണ ചെലവ

But my friends found it tough to communicate earlier. Now they said in Kochi, you can speak Hindi as there are many workers from outside. They said if you dont know to speak/understand Malayalam it was tough earlier, even in Kochi. I don't have any issues with this; just stating my friends experiences. From my experience, young Malayalis are more fluent in their mother tongue, even if brought outside in Delhi/Bangalore. How well have Gulf Malayalis maintained their language, especially those brought up in the Gulf? Have non-Malayalis picked up any Malayalam given how large Keralite community?

The number of Tamil labourers was drastically reduced when there were lots of developmental activities happening in TN along with the 2 rs / kg rice during the DMK rule.

I can confirm that the above is true. A few years ago, all the casual labourers waiting for work here used to be Tamil. Now, very few Tamils and lots of Odisha/Bengal/Bihar folk.

Less and less Tamil migrants even in Bangalore. In TN itself more north east and north indian workers.

TN has better educational facilities than Kerala. The new generation is interested into education and then interested in going abroad. They have a number of ITI centers as well as diploma and other normal courses.

Tamils no need to go out of state for normal education..

10,000 visitors make to Biennale Venues in just 3 Days

The first three days of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale registered roughly 10,000 footfalls with a chunk of them at the Aspinwall House in Fort Kochi, according to organisers of the three-month art bonanza.

"Thursday alone recorded more than 3,000 footfalls. Going by the initial indication, we should be hitting the originally estimated eight lakh visitors by the end of the Biennale (on March 13 next year)," a key functionary with the Kochi Biennale foundation said.

The sea-facing Aspinwall House, the hub of the extravaganza, has been attracting the maximum visitors, followed by the Pepper House in the neighbourbood, he said.

"The long queue of cars on the side of the road adjoining the Aspinwall is one suggestion. Towards evening, there is a surge in the crowd."
People out on an evening stroll or those who dropped by after office hours were disappointed as entry to venues were closed by 6 pm.

"Lets come on a weekend," said one family which was passing by on Friday evening to visit the exhibition that is free.

Noted writer Paul Zacharia, who was in Fort Kochi, said the Biennale would be "biggest turning-point" in the contemporary art history of Kerala.

"Malayalis have massive festivals for cinema, drama and other art forms. What we needed was a Biennale. I hope my state-mates would make full use of it," he said. "It will also give a new face to Kerala's cultural tourism."

At the leafy compound of the Aspinwall, Dutch artist Joseph Semah and Clifford Charles of South Africa, who featured in the 'Let's Talk' series of the Biennale yesterday, spoke on the current trends in art and the new sensibilities it has been acquiring in recent times.

A Thira programme was also staged at Aspinwall in which two performing artistes of the traditional folk art danced to the beat of as many drummers, all of them from Sankaramangalam, a village near Pattambi in Palakkad district.
