Vaalimaa is certainly area where you can make lots of money at the moment...especially if you can speak russian. Not surprised at all about that project.

It's down to 6 from hundreds of suggestions for the Helsinki City Library. You can see pics of them in here.
Above isn't one of the 6 that got through.

They all suck. Instead of being concerned with whats best for the visitors of the library (like unique-in-the-world-views-of the archipelago, sea & city. ie. 12-floors or more), the city planners only concern seems to be to leave an architectural mark on the city.

"Look what a cool looking building we approved and you can go there to use multimedia computers! The library of the future!"

Total catastrophe. There will never be a chance to design a public building like this again, and they fucked it up.

Btw, this is how SRV markets Kalasatama:

And PPS. There were proposals that had grasped this potential, they just chose to ignore them. Incredible. Incredibly shocking.

It looks nice, but a functional library it isn't imo.

Like already discussed on the thread i linked i have nothing against those 6 that survived the cut. Actually i'm surprised that such a good suggestions survived.

Let's stick to libraries: Cool pictures (© Tuomas Uusheimo, JKMM Architects) of the new Seinäjoki Library. The building is situated on the Alvar Aalto's landmark centre, so it's been a spot for very subtle design, and yet they've managed to create something totally new but with Aalto-ish twist. Quite a few pictures coming up:

I suppose, it's just an element of interior desing. But I've thought that the ceiling was made of wood...

Oh no, that's not wood in the ceiling. Reminds me of air-raid shelters..

I think bare congrete is just buttugly. In 20 years we hate it like we gate 70's commie argitecture now.

I guess many like those road underpasses which are similar concrete showing wood patter from wooden mould?

For exteriors I agree, but it can make for a cool looking interior if used just right.

Yeah, I agree. The ceiling in that library's interior makes interesting effect.
